I disabled the Welcome screen in User Accounts options in Control Panel. I like the way it uses standard dialog boxes instead for things like shutting down, but there's a problem. With this disabled, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete hides all windows and pops up a Windows Security dialog with buttons like Task Manager, Lock Computer, etc. Is it possible to remove this and just have it open Task Manager, while still using the dialog boxes?

You can have multiple copies of Windows on one drive.

It depends what you're looking for. For example, put in "pokemon" on pretty much any P2P app and you're unlikely to find anything Pokémon-related. The stuff you will find I wouldn't recommend opening on a computer you care about. (Interestingly this also yeilds quite a bit of porn.)

I think you need to investigate why csrss.exe is running Quicktime. That would give it kernel access wouldn't it? Certainly not something a video player needs. It's interesting that the movie plays fine from an external drive, and opens in Wordpad, but won't play where it is. QT and Wordpad might be doing things differently. Have you defragged lately?

File system might be corrupt, try error checking and defrag. Might also be a registry problem.

When that happens Process Explorer should have highlighted a handle in the bottom pane. If the only program that has the file open is explorer.exe (and it's not being copied or read by another user or something), you can probably safely close the handle, which will let you delete it.

Not even that far. The BIOS shows an error message and opens the configuration automatically. Exiting configuration automatically shuts down the system.

I've had this problem when burning a CD; windows would lock the drive and I'd have to eject it manually. Because there's no media removal notification and a disc cache, the old data is still somewhat readable. Basically your DVD drive may well be the culprit here. Windows should have a way to force a re-read though... Ctrl+F5?

I can't. It won't boot when that error occurrs.

I've tried the D-Link DFE-538TX that worked in Win98 and the SMC 1211TX-50. With the Realtek RTL8139, the BIOS complains that "not enough I/O space is available". I suspect the PCI controller may be toast as the only other cards I've tried are the sound card (not detected), video capture (no drivers) and some old PCI video card (just doesn't seem to work). How can I test the PCI slots, preferrably without buying some new hardware? All three of those services are running, even setting them to automatic startup didn't help. What I find odd is that when I tried the RTL8139, it wouldn't start, so I switched back to the D-Link and now Windows claims to have found and be using the RTL8139 that I'm holding.

Try changing its value to zero. Sounds more like some other part of the registry got fried though.

Mine always used to access the floppy drive when opening a large folder. Never did figure out why. The not updating issue just seems to be a bug, it happens to me too.

That's what I figured, but I've turned back on all those related to networking. The rest are disabled on my other computer without any problem. [edit] I System Restored to before I'd changed any settings, and it still won't connect.

142KB is a fair amount on a 10GB hard disk IMO. I intend to make an effort to keep invalid files out of the system folders to begin with. There's only like 3 programs I'll even be installing; Winamp, VLC and one I'm making. The card is detected when Windows boots up, doesn't show any errors, and has the default MS driver. It's the same for both cards. The tour prompt has no checkbox, it's just a balloon popup with a Close button.

I just bet there's a way to stretch or center the image. If I had to guess I'd say it works the same way as the desktop, which has those options.

Any time you get a Stop error: 1) Write down the message and numbers (5 numbers like 0x12345678). 2) Go to Microsoft.com and look up "STOP [first number]". 3) Read up on the description. It usually describes common causes and fixes. You may need the other 4 numbers to determine what exactly is wrong. 4) If none of that helps, ask for help.

I just install WinXP Pro SP2 onto an old Pentium 233 box, hoping to use it as a media center PC or whatever you call it (hook it up to the TV and watch movies from hard drive, DVD-ROM etc). I know I could just get WinXP MCE but I like to do things the hard way sometimes. The box has 64MB of RAM and runs at (guess what) 233mhz, which is surprisingly sufficient once you remove all the fancy graphics and disable some unnecessary services. Now there's a problem with the networking, and it's quite a big problem since with no network connection I can't access the movies I want to watch, nor install drivers for the video capture or sound cards. (It doesn't even detect the sound card, so I suspect it may be pooched; it's one of them old ones like PCI but bigger.) The problem is Windows says my network cable is unplugged while my router says it's connected fine. I've tried moving the card to another PCI slot and switching it for another one. I managed to get it to try to connect but fail to get an IP address (one is listed but it changes to zero ), then go back to saying it's unplugged. I used networking with the same parts and setup in Win98 on this box before, so I know it all works. The LED on the card is on and blinks as normal. I even took the cable it was using and plugged it into my laptop and used it to submit this post. Also, I'm looking for a way to disable the "low resolution/colour" and "take a tour of Windows" balloons. I'm aware of my low colour depth and will fix it when I get a new video card, so I don't need to be reminded. I deleted the tour program outright so there's no sense prompting me to run it. How do I stop these? Finally, I want to delete the following files in System32 to save some space: sfc.dll sfc_os.dll wscsvc.dll The first two are System File Checker which I don't care about; I already deleted sfc_files.dll so blah. The third is the Security Center service which is disabled. I've renamed them and rebooted to ensure they aren't needed (uxtheme.dll was ), but since I had to be running as SYSTEM to even touch them, I want to ensure nothing is going to break if I outright delete them.

That or Automatic Power Management.

I've followed the directions to replace the boot screen in the sticky thread, but they don't seem to have worked. Nothing has changed after replaing bitmap #1 (and I checked that it had been saved, the hacked ntoskrnl.exe was loaded, etc). The bitmaps are numbered 1 to 15 with 9 to 12 missing. No other bitmap is large enough to be the boot screen. After replacing #5 (a Windows logo and "Microsoft Windows"), the entire boot screen went black except the progress bar. I don't want to use the /NOGUIBOOT method because then I'd lose the progress bar. Any ideas?

I've noticed a similar problem. I removed all existing permissions and then gave an account read permissions on the root of drive C. This is inherited for some folders, such as Program Files, but not others such as Documents and Settings. I even get this on other drives which don't contain system files. I have to manually add the account to that folder's permissions even though it should be inherited.

What the heck, I replaced bitmap #1 but I still see the old bootscreen. #9-12 don't exist (I have 1-8 and 13-15), and no others are big enough to be it; #5 is a Windows logo and the words "Microsoft Windows", but not the rest of the image which is still present somehow. [edit] After replacing #5 the entire boot screen is black except for the progress bar. >_<

Windows won't correctly detect or burn blank media in my DVD+/-RW either; I have to use Nero. It should work with a CDR or CDRW though, especially if it's not a DVD drive.

The first thing I do when I get a Stop error is search for the error code on Microsoft.com. This one gets 6 results. What filename is it showing? Most of the results relate to installing Windows, and one mentions removing hardware unexpectedly (I've had that cause problems too). "At random" may in fact mean at some event you hadn't noticed, eg booting/shutting down with a certain device connected, certain times of day, battery life, etc.

Floppies do that all the time.
