  1. Hopefully it'll be illegalized like it should be, but I wouldn't count on it. We'll just start seeing more and more invasive spyware. Things that literally spy through your webcam, re-write your boot sector, and all those other things that would be criminal acts if they weren't being done by advertising programs. The difference between spyware and viruses will become minimal as they start spreading through methods like security exploits (think Blaster) and email attatchments. Eventually, because of its ever-growing user base, the very structure of the Internet won't be enough to handle all its users with spyware hogging up so many resources.
  2. Odd. When I go to that site it says I'm opening a file with no name and asks if I want to download it. O_o
  3. Basically the problem here is a lack of LBA support. Before LBA all drives used 28-bit addressing. The problem is you can't address anything higher than 137GB with only 28 bits. When Windows tries to, it chops off the number and sends only the first 28 bits to the drive, so when you try to access the 138th GB, you really end up accessing the 0th. LBA mode expands the address to 48 bits so the drive gets the proper number.
  4. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to hack the kernel to support multiple processors. Easy, no, but possible.
  5. Cool... If I add more letters, does the button expand? And what about the icon? [edit] Yep, it expands. But if I change it to just a space, the taskbar won't show. O_o
  6. And with Firefox and VLC Player available, who even needs IE or WMP?
  7. Command line would be a good bet. Try running command.com if you can't get cmd.exe to work. Hopefully .com files won't be affected. If that doesn't work you can change the '.exe' to '.scr' in the program's name, so Windows will think it's a screen saver.
  8. I think this has to be one of the best I've heard: Guy: It says 'press any key when ready'. Tech support: So? Guy: How do I know when it's ready?
  9. Watch this, a bunch of places will sink.
  10. Lmao! The porn ones are especially awesome. They certainly come up with some odd titles to those emails.
  11. Cogeco's not bad and doesn't block anything I know of.
  12. Yay CDRWs. There's hardly any point in even having CDRs any more.
  13. You lose that much just from not sleeping? That explains a lot. ...It's not permenant is it? o_o
  14. Jeez. SP1 makes everything buggy, SP2 won't even boot up... I fear to think what'd happen if I installed SP3. HIT THE DECK!
  15. I found this neat little program the other day. You could add a batch file to your startup that uses it to set the volume level to something good.
  16. This probably is a virus. Try AVG or Trend Micro's live scan.
  17. Have you rebooted since then? And after doing so is the option still set to what you set it to?
  18. I'm looking for information on how I can do a few things in Windows XP: 1) Reserve space on the screen. Notice how when you maximize a window, it doesn't cover the taskbar because it's reserved space for itself. I need to do this but not actually put a window in the space. (I imagine it's possible, because usually if I close explorer.exe unexpectedly, the space is still reserved and I can see the desktop under it.) 2) Draw on the desktop. I don't think this should be too difficult, but I'm not entirely sure about re-drawing and the like. Examples would be appreciated. -OR- Create a 'true' child window on the desktop. Most of the desktop's 'children' act just like parent windows, eg Notepad, Calculator and Firefox are all children of the desktop. What I need is a window that's like part of the desktop, like the icons (if they're even windows?) or a windows' controls. 3) Get statistics about the network connection. At the very least, total amount uploaded and downloaded since startup and/or current total upload/download speed. NetLimiter does this so I don't see why I couldn't. 4) Get and set the system volume level and whether it's muted. 5) See if a given process has terminated yed. (Not the thread, the entire process.) 6) Put the system into Standby or Hibernate mode. 7) Detect when a file is written to, and what parts have been changed. 8) Get a list of icons in the system tray. I've looked all over but nobody seems to know how to do this. 9) Play system sounds (eg: Whatever sound is selected for 'Windows Startup') and add my own to the list. 10) Turn the monitor on or off. This is actually for a few different projects I had in mind. I'll do some searching when it comes time, but I'm not really working on any of them right now so I just thought I'd see if anyone here knew.
  19. So yeah, this is your generic newbie hello post. New here, not new to messing around with software or using forums, so yes, I read the rules. Dibs on any pie that falls within 20 feet of me.
