Longhorn is not very stable and there are still bugs, if you are comfortable with crashing and bugs, then install it as your main os. But there are not many drivers out there yet.

I was led to believe that people are not highly anticipating longhorn as they are comfortable with Windows XP professional. Why?

This is called Mixed mode domains.

Go to bink.nu, they have every bootdisk in the world, if your computer supports it you should use El Torrito bootable CD. As this configures the CD driver as well.
