  1. I should rephrase myself. I want WFP active, but I'd like to keep it from protecting everything in and including the Program Files directory (So I can, for example, remove an empty WMP directory ). There was a hacked sfc_os.dll for SP1 that did this, but there isn't a version for SP2 yet (that I know of). I was hoping someone could help me in editing sfc_os.dll to suit my needs. Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure something out.
  2. How would I go about removing a certain directory (in this case Program Files and everything under it) from being watched by WFP? There was post with a hacked dll for SP1 a while back, but I didn't find it in a search. Besides, I don't remember there being much in the way of instructions for making a new version of the dll.
  3. That link doesn't work. Now I'm worried, as the torrent doesn't come out to be quite that big.. (the copy I got from the torrent was 266MB downloaded, not 272...)
  4. Woo, I'm getting 250KB/sec and the speed keeps increasing. 65MB to go. Let's hope the signature checks out..
  5. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2] "Settings"=hex:28,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,06,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,3c,00,00,00,34,\ 00,00,00,fe,ff,ff,ff,fe,ff,ff,ff,02,04,00,00,32,00,00,00 It took forever to find this key when I was hunting for it. I'm glad I can help someone else out with it. BTW, you might just want to export your version of this key--the two might be different. Actually, now that I think about it..the taskbarwinxp tweak should be the one to get a two row-ed taskbar. This one puts it at the top of the screen...Silly me.
  6. I'm using FIrefox (0.9.3) and adblock and I'm not having trouble with the chat.
  7. I think I know what'll get the service pack out sooner. Let's all threaten to replace Windows with Linux on all our machines. I mean, it worked for these guys, so why not us?
  8. I doubt it'll be officially released for at least a few days. I'm hoping for a leak, however.
  9. prathapml's gonna get a link, post it, and then there will be mysql errors for a week so no one can access it.
  10. I'm eagerly awaiting SP2's release so I can slipstream it, format the hard drive, and reinstall Windows before classes start again. Tomorrow would be perfect.
  11. If that were the case don't you think they would've said so in the zdnet article?
  12. I take it you mean AntiVir Personal Edition, right? Check out this thread (second to last post). Worked like a charm for me. Just be sure to delete the "SourcePathDisk1=D:\INST\DISK_1" line (or comment it out) or you'll have problems.
  13. ;Hides Recycle Bin et al from the Desktop. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu] "{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000001 "{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000001 "{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}"=dword:00000001 "{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000001 "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"=dword:00000001 This is what I use to hide the desktop items and it has worked fine. Looks like there are different ones for both styles of start menu...perhaps that's your problem?
  14. Are you going to merge the other visual effect topic, then? I always assumed the Registry Tweaks thread was to be used just to list tweaks, not debug the usage of them. Oh well.
  15. I've just about got my registry tweaks finished, but there are a few tiny details that I can't seem to work out. First up are my visual effects settings. Some apply while others don't and I can't understand why. Here are the VE registry settings: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects] "VisualFXSetting"=dword:00000003 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\AnimateMinMax] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ComboBoxAnimation] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\CursorShadow] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DropShadow] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\FontSmoothing] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ListBoxSmoothScrolling] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ListviewAlphaSelect] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ListviewShadow] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ListviewWatermark] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\MenuAnimation] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\SelectionFade] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\TaskbarAnimations] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\TooltipAnimation] "DefaultApplied"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\WebView] "DefaultValue"=dword:00000000 I've noticed two settings (DefaultValue and DefaultApplied) so I think I'll try setting both and I'll see what happens, but in the meantime hopefully someone can provide a sure solution to this annoying problem. It seems the visual effects have been quite a problem for lots of people, so hopefully someone is familiar with this issue. I've tried applying these tweaks during setup (t-13) and through runonceex after setup with little success. Second thing is the small icons in the start menu. I've been using this tweak iapplied at both T-13 and guirunonce/runonceex and it still doesn't work: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "Start_LargeMFUIcons"=dword:00000000 "Start_MinMFU"=dword:0000000a Next is moving the taskbar to the top of the screen. I had thought the same key that enables the quick launch toolbar, but it isn't working (although quick launch does..). Once again I've tried applying it during setup at t-13 and afterwards. Finally, I've been trying to move the Address Bar in explorer to be on the same level as the Back, Forward, etc buttons. I'm not sure exactly which key would control this, but I have successfully configured small icons in Explorer and told it to not display text next to any toolbar buttons. I'd assume this same key controlled that as well, but this does not seem to be the case.
  16. The vbs is rather simple: Set wshshell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") wshshell.findfiles If I could call the vbscript from the section of the start menu that Search usually appears from that'd work fine, but I don't think that's possible. The easiest thing to do would be to create a shortcut to it and dump that in the Start Menu at the same level as the "Programs" directory, which I may very well end up doing... System Restore has never quite worked right, so I never use it. In fact, I removed it completely.
  17. Thanks, guys. I'd known about hiding the Search item in the menu, and I very well might go for that if I can find another way to launch the search window that I can incorporate into the start menu (I found a vbscript that does the trick, but I don't think I could use it in quite the manner I'm wanting). I'll see if I can't get something to happen with this registry entry. ...Perhaps I should do this on a VM just in case I royally screw something up..
  18. I've been doing a wee bit of editing of the classic start menu with Resource Hacker, and I've just about got everything the way I want it but there is one tiny detail that really, really annoys me. The "classic" menu in XP has Search as a submenu with "For Files or Folders" and "On the Internet" as items within that menu. What I want to accomplish is to remove the submenu completely and instead have the "Search" item in the Start Menu immediately start the "For Files or Folders" action. The "normal" XP start menu has this desired behavior with the Search button, but I can't figure out how to get the Classic menu to do it. Does anyone know what files control the normal XP Start Menu? I reshacked explorer.exe to modify the classic menu as I like, but the only information I've found in regards to the normal Start Menu there are a few strings, which isn't all too helpful. Hopefully someone else here has been as anal-retentive as I am now in regards to this and can help me out a little. Oh, and if this has been covered before, sorry. I haven't yet found anything using the forum search.
  19. Having just reinstalled 2000 Pro, I can say that this annoying screen does indeed show up on non-server versions of win2k. No clue how to get rid of it, though...
  20. My vote goes for Active File Recovery. I'd tried Active's Partition Recovery trial, but found it disappointing (it wouldn't let you restore the partition. I then "acquired" a copy of File Recovery (the Pro version, actually) and it recovered all of my files on my deleted partition. I now plan on buying the software soon, as it really is worth it (only $30 for the Home version and $50 for the Pro). I should mention that there is a free partition recovery program called testdisk, but I had little success with it (besides, it seems that what you need is an individual file, not the entire partition). Good luck recovering that file.
  21. For what it's worth, I copied taskkill.exe from XP Pro to Home and it worked fine.
  22. I haven't gotten the taskbar at the top, either. You're not alone.
  23. Also, in some cases the program/game will check the OS version each time it is run (Hasbro's RISK comes to mind...), so it is simply easier to use compatibility mode for it.
  24. You can try it, just be sure to install it on a machine you don't care about or VMware of Virtual PC..
  25. Actually, I've found that I can access the internet during setup (specifically, after setup installs the network stuff), so the express updates might just work from svcpack.inf. It is worth a shot, anyway.
