  1. Right-Click on My Computer and choose Properties. Then under Device Manager, remove the display adapter and reboot. This should work provided your graphic card has got drivers included in the Windows cabs. Anyway Windows will automatically redetect your display adapter at startup and install the best it has got so you won't be left without display at all but also maybe it will be 256 colors and 640x480 only. If this fails maybe the best is to install Win98 without upgrading from Win95. Also maybe you could look at which adapter you've got before deleting it and see if there is updated drivers for it to download somewhere.
  2. Your symptoms are described here : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;238096
  3. Have you tried reinstalling your display drivers ?
  4. There is an excellent free tool for handling VB scripts and also other scripts. It is AnalogX Script Defender. What it does is that it registers itself as handler for several script files and asks you whether you want to run the script or not before it is executed. http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm The thing is that some people are using scripts to perform tasks on their OSes so that deleting the .vbs file association will create problems for them. Maybe setting the default action for .vbs scripts to be opened by Notepad is a good solution. As for the .inf scripts, you'd be needing to right click and choose to run the script.
  5. I haven't gotten those files from any of those OSes. They all came bundled with one software installer or another and got written in the system directory. I actually install quite a lot of software so I can't remember which ones. Well I have just googled a bit and I come up with SpecsIntact for 98 / NT/ 2000 / XP SP 1, a free software from NASA. It does install Riched32.dll version 5.0.2134.1 along with Riched20.dll 5.30.23.1203 and Richtx.ocx 6.00.8804. Considering this, there shouldn't be a legal problem with redistributing Riched32.dll 5.0.2134.1. http://specsintact.ksc.nasa.gov/software/software.htm http://specsintact.ksc.nasa.gov/software/S...systemreq32.htm http://si.ksc.nasa.gov/specsintact/pdf/files.pdf PS : I have downloaded the installer. It is a self-extracting Install Shield installer. Files can easily be extracted from data1.cab by using a nice freeware GUI tool : Winpack : http://snoopy81.ifrance.com/snoopy81/dl_en/WinPack300b.zip
  6. Hi Grasshoppa, It seems some files could be corrupted on your Hard drive. Try reinstalling from the CD rather than from the Hard disk and as there is apparently corruption problems, do a thorough scandisk before as to fix eventual bad sectors.
  7. Hi again the_guy, It appears that the Win2000 color scheme is the same as the default WinME color scheme so there is no point including it.
  8. Riched32.dll Version 5.0.1461.82 : Size = 212,992 bytes. Windows 95 Rich Text Edit Control. Dependencies are Advapi32.dll, GDI32.dll, Kernel32.dll, Ole32.dll, Shell32.dll and User32.dll. Version : 5.0.2008.1 : Size = 3,856 bytes. Wrapper Dll for Richedit. Dependencies are Riched20.dll and User32.dll. Version 5.0.2134.1 : Size = 3,856 bytes. Wrapper Dll for Richedit. Dependencies are Riched20.dll and User32.dll. Version 5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148) : Size = 3,584 bytes. Wrapper Dll for Richedit. Dependencies are Riched20.dll and User32.dll. There is also a version 5.2.3790.0 ((srv03_rtm.030324-2048) that I haven't got. Is there a reason not to use the later versions ? It seems to me when looking at the sizes and dependencies that what Riched32 was doing could now be handled by Riched20 so that if there is a newer Riched20, there should also be a newer Riched32. Or am I wrong ?
  9. Hi Jimmsta, Thanks for the tip but it seems that Virtual Floppy Drive works only with NT systems and it also seems it does not handle compressed floppy images anyway.
  10. I haven't looked at that so far as I have no responsiveness problems with the host when running either guest.
  11. Hi again, I have tried the installer in a virtual PC. It does crash rundll32 in setupx.dll. There could be a problem in SPUPDATE.INF. Have you tested on a real machine ?
  12. I also have MSVCP60.DLL 6.2.3104.0 (2 different ones). (I have four different MSVCP60.DLL 6.0.8972.0) Does someone know what the best shfolder.dll is ? It's a file I have found to create problems. No it's not. I can't remember what broke but I did post reports somewhere here. One of the 4526 files only was wrongly behaved for many of us, so MDGx removed that one and replaced it by a 4522 one and then erpdude reported that it was still breaking PC Health (which is removed from my ME system). To the best of my memory. 4522 is OK on ME.
  13. Hi, the_guy, Another suggestion : You could replace q329414 by MDAC 2.80 or even 2.81. Of course it would make the pack quite a little bit bigger. Hi Petr, I use a more recent Riched20.dll : 5.31.23.1218, Rich Text Edit Control, v3.1 I also think MSVCRT.DLL should be updated to version 6.1.9844.0. That's what I am using on my ME system. Do you know anything about riched32.dll ? Why the size shrinks so much in newer versions : 5.0.1461.82 from the WinME CD is 212,992 bytes with six dependencies and 5.0.2134.1 is only 3,856 bytes with only two dependencies.
  14. Hi the_guy, I have not tested the pack yet but I have had a quick look at the files. Seems very well done. I have noted that three updates I have might be missing : Q263816 RPCLTSCM.DLL 4.71.3400.0 Q269874 RPCRT4.DLL 4.71.3336.0 Q282132 FP4AWEC.DLL 4.0.2.4715 Also an updated WINBOOT.EBD is apparently missing.
  15. Thanks for the info.
  16. Give a link and I'll test that in a QEMU WinME virtual PC. Try to upload on Megaupload or Yousendit instead of RapidShare as it's less of a pain to download from those. Maybe it's a bit early for MajorGeeks and Softpedia, don't you think ?
  17. MakeMeAdmin is surely a stupid tool to install on a 2000/XP machine as any attacker with limited rights could then use it to easily gain admin privileges and do whatever it wants on a machine if I understand well.
  18. Installing, running and working with 9x virtual PCs under 98/ME systems with QEMU made very easy. Highly recommended for poor service packs creators and testers alike as it's all free. Just follow the few easy steps and in a few hours you'll be running not only a fast and responsive (on recent hardware) but also a very usefull 9x emulation under your 9x OS. QEMU is very easy to setup and use use with the help of Qemu Manager and a few other free GUI tools : * Installing Win98SE/ME 1) Get QEMU for Windows itself : http://www.h6.dion.ne.jp/~kazuw/qemu-win/q...7.2-windows.zip 2) Get the Qemu Manager : http://www.davereyn.co.uk/qem/qman20.zip 3) Unpack all that somewhere. 4) Run Qemu manager and locate QEMU with it. 5) Create a bootable ISO image of the install CD of the OS you want to emulate. There is a CD buttom on Qemu Manager taskbar who launches a wizard to just do that but I found it not to work on my system. So : 6) Download cdrtools : http://www.sbox.tugraz.at/home/t/tplank/cd...1-win32-bin.zip 7) Download CD DVD to ISO : http://www.paehl-info.de/cdr/cddvdiso.zip 8) Extract them in the same directory and run cddvdiso.exe to create your CD image. All options unchecked works fine. 9) Create a new virtual machine in Qemu Manager by clicking on the first button on the toolbar. 10) Create a virtual drive. Save your virtual machine. 11) Go in the newly created virtual machine options and select to boot on CD. Browse to your CD image. Leave all other options as default. Save your config. 12) Start your virtual machine by clicking on the green start button on the taskbar. Run Setup. * Installing Win95 For Win95 you'll need also to create a boot floppy image as the Win95 install CDs are not bootable (at least the ones I have got, Win 95 upgrade and Win95B). 1) If needed, download the correct boot floppy image self extractor : http://www.shaneo.com/bootdisks/ 2) Write it to a floppy disk. 3) Download the free Floppy Image. Extract an uncompressed image of the boot floppy with it and set it as floppy drive in Qemu Manager. Boot on it. 4) Use fdisk and format from the virtual boot floppy to prepare the virtual hard-disk. Then run setup from the virtual CD-Rom. * Importing and exporting files from guest OS to host OS : 1) By using FTP, it is theoretically possible to exchange files between the two OSes while the emulation is running. Upload to FTP from either OS and download in the other. I have not tried that yet but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Bound to be slow and requiring you rent some online FTP space. Using RapidShare or Yousendit or Megaupload should also work. 2) By opening the hard disk images while the emulation is not running and exporting files from it. One single tool to do that under Win9x : DiskExplorer. Disk images must be uncompressed (Raw) for it to work. Select "wmware plain disk" in the drop list that appears after selecting the disk image. This soft is supposed to import files as well but I found this not to work on my system (Maybe I have overlooked something). Exporting files works fine. 3) To import files, a virtual CD ISO image can be used. Here is an easy GUI tool to create such an image from a folder without having to burn it on CD first : FolderIso. Select your folder, create your ISO image in one click and then set it up as CD-ROM for your virtual machine through Qemu Manager. Then copy files from the virtual CD to the desktop inside the emulation. * Disk image format choice and conversion There are three different formats that can be created and used by QEMU : 1) RAW uncompressed which is the only format that allows for files to be extracted from an image; 2) Qcow, QEMU's own compressed format; and 3) Vmdk (Vmware 3/4 format). I have tried Raw and Qcow and also converted them to each other, the only operation that did require me to use a command line tool. (A fresh install of WinME on a 1.8 GB virtual disk weighs 1.8 GB in raw format but only around 450 MB in Qcow.) To convert, copy qemu-img.exe from the Qemu folder to the folder where there is the image you want to convert and create a batch file (text file saved with a .bat extension) : To convert from qcow to raw (example) : qemu-img convert -f qcow -O raw Win9x.dsk 9xNew.dsk To convert from qcow to raw (example) : qemu-img convert -f raw -O qcow Win9x.dsk 9xNew.dsk It'll take a few minutes (not many) * First Impressions : I am simply amazed of booting a WinMe guest in less than 20 seconds in QEMU running on a WinME host that takes one minute to boot. Otherwise it is pretty impressive and fast. Runs like a 500Mhz machine on a 2Ghz one. Don't expect though to play videos or sound or 3D smoothly as you cannot benefit from any harware acceleration. I would recommend one single tweak immediately after setup to fully appreciate the speed. It is to set up the menu reaction speed to a low value (1 ms in the example below) by editing the registry : REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "MenuShowDelay"="1" Then logoff or reboot your virtual machine. I hope you'll enjoy all that as much as I do. 19. I use an Athlon XP 2600 on an Abit NF7S mobo, standard 7200 rpm WDC hard drives, old Geforce2 MX 400 graPHIC CARD, 19inch HP M900 monitor in 1280 x 1024 and Broadband modem. Audio is usable only for short system sounds, otherwise it stutters too much. I have now installed WinME as well and it boots to the desktop under 20 seconds (about 3 times faster than 98SE) which amazes me even more. Yes it seems to run about as fast as a 500 MHz real machine for everything except for multimedia. Audio stutters if longer than a short system sound and the intro Windows ME video which has no close button forced me to abort my first ME session and restart with audio emulation disabled as to get rid of it. I have not tried full screen mode. Host OS Hard drives cannot be directly accessed. There is a good GUI tool available to extract files from disk images. Importing stuff is a matter of creating an ISO image of a folder and set it as CD-ROM. Theoretically it is possible to use FTP to import and export files as well but I have not tried that. I'll be writing a small tut today or tomorow under a new thread with links to all the needed downloads. Edit : QEMU for 98/ME dummies
  20. 139 pages of KB articles for Win98 (2082 items and many long gone from MS websites) : http://www.kbalertz.com/technology_232.aspx. (Posted with a fresh Win98SE install without any update in QEMU running on WinME. See my last post in the WMvare thread in the other subforum for a little bit more details about that if you are interested)
  21. This time I make the post with a fresh install of Win98SE in QEMU running on WinME. Took around one and a half hour to install. Boots to the Win98 desktop in less than a minute. Everything works well. 1024 x768, 32bit color depth, audio and network support and it is surprisingly fast and responsive. I have used Qemu Manager, a splendid GUI to create, manage and launch virtual machines in QEMU. Also I used Magic ISO to create a bootable image of the 98SE install CD. Absolutely splendid. PS: My above problem with the right-click in PureWinLin was due to Stroke-It I use in WinME. Disabling it solved the problem.
  22. I make this post with PureWinLin (Minimal Debian/Gnome in QEMU) running on Windows ME. A bit slow (3 and a half minutes to boot onto the gnome desktop) and no right-click. I just had to unpack the archive, double click on a batch file and once booted and running, I just had to allow QEMU to access the internet in Zone Alarm after launching Firefox in QEMU (I am on broadband). Try it, it's fun.
  23. Clasys, please stop the madness : My post count is 440. The combined post count of You (72 posts), Gape (427 posts), MDGx (806 posts) and erpdude8 (412 posts) is 1717. According to you 440 is a number far superior to 1717. I suggest you have your head examined by a specialist. I'll really leave it here now.
  24. Clasys you are entirely off topic in this thread with your IE6 updates. More you post, more you are off-topic. You are even becaming insanely off topic with your references to your value and contribution not being reflected in your post count and all the PMs you exchange with Gape and others and lalala. You've got clearly some sort of problem according to me. Why not simply opening a dedicated thread to discuss the IE6 KB updates installers that do not perform as they should and that are apparently of so much concern to you ? Frankly, after a while, I had expected you to : 1) post a full list of those IE6 KBs 2) Say which ones do not work. But there is still none of it. I'll leave it there. Bye.
  25. Wintop by Microsoft (part of the 95 kernel toys) does what you want for 32bits processes. Tasklist by Japheth (in German) will give you also some detailed information about 16 bits processes.
