  1. OK you've got the problem even with using OpenSSL. (I don't know which are the equivalent files in windows btw nor how the whole stuff works) Perhaps you have problems simply because you run a system being recognized as 98SE on the other side.

Symbols for what version of the files? What's a symbol file? I wanted to ask the same question. And also what are they used for ? And why are they available only to MSDN subscribers ?
  3. What are the dlls involved in that mechanism ?
  4. ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Services/whql/Too...t96download.exe
  5. I don't think this is a good one. In my experience I found that it significantly degradated system performance.
  6. HTH Thanks a lot for answering. No rush but if you could remember a bit more, it would be nice. If true, what you are saying is quite groundbreaking as it is so far and to my (very limited) knowledge, totally undocumented that the size of the 32bit resource segments can be changed simply with settings. Does this hold true for any system or only for one running with a debug kit installed ? I have no clue of the impact, in terms of performance and stability, of running such a system with debugger but, at least for performance, maybe the impact is very low on a fast machine. From what you are saying, I understand that for knowing precisely what is in use for both 16bits and 32bits separately, the debugger is necessary. I have been on the page you quote and I ended up downloading some 18.000 9x related files with Web Reaper. That's a lot. I'll have a read at the specific ones you say, there aren't that many, and I'll try to get something usefull out of it. Thanks again. PS : I haven't seen any of the screenshots you speak about on the above quoted site but I might have so far missed them.
  7. The bak copy is not wininit.exe but the previous wininit.ini if it's about wininit.bak you are speaking about.
  8. Why install Winrar when you can do this with Notepad.
  9. I refrained myself to suggest you looking into shellexes and BHOs as you seemed knowledgeable/resourcefull enough to find it by yourself. Let us know which one it was when you'll find out.

Nice link Petr. I also found there the Windows ME Debugger Kit. Something I ignored existed until now. http://www.arte.unipi.it/Public/Win32/winmekdb.exe
  11. Try to use Regmon to see what it does not find.

It's not the most recent version.
  13. Don't trust what is written in the registry if you've been around the net with IE or have installed a bit of software. I found out several times that entries under the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion got changed by f*** knows what. Product Type (XP instead of ME), username, etc...
  14. It seems Creative has pulled off it's site ALL drivers for 9x.
  15. Unless it has just been updated, I had missed that so far. So, any more information please ? You say the size of the 32bits segments could be enlarged simply by modifying hidden system settings. Which ones and where please ?
  16. I would not recommend Pkzip as it's not free and requires an email even for the demo. http://nct.digitalriver.com/fulfill/0018.035 Look into this one instead : http://www.izarc.org/izarccl.html For the batch file posted above you'll need to have marble.zip present in program files before running the command and the commandline util somewhere in the search path otherwise it won't work IMO.
  17. Dr Watson simply intercept a certain number of crashes and automatically makes a snapshot including a crash log when it happens but it is usually very difficult to get something meaningfull for a end user out of it. What do you find under the hook tab in Dr watson snapshot ? Could you actually post a Dr Watson snapshot as it gives many usefull information as to what runs in your system, particularly at low level ?
  18. One other report for this error but with no solution : http://www.supportnet.de/fresh/2006/9/id1420753.asp As always, if you were able to pinpoint aproximately where in time it begun, it would possibly give you a clue as to what changed in your system around that time that could be responsable for it. Do you run Dr Watson ? Sometimes it gives a bit of a clue if it is able to intecept the crash.
  19. You can use CopyLock. It 's an easy to use GUI tool to write a wininit.ini file used by wininit.exe to delete/update files on reboot. http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc#CopyLock
  20. I thought it could be related to having more than 512MB and no vcache value set in system.ini. Have you got a clue as to what you did before it begun to happen ? Installing some new software or something ?
  21. How much RAM have you got ?
  22. Well done. We'll see if you get an answer. Some reading in the meantime : http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?...ht=sysinternals http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?...als&start=0
  23. Have you asked them ?
