  1. I have removed this patch (on Windows ME) because 1) I still got explorer freezes in some circumstances and they seem to a bit be nastier than the normal ones (apparently it happens when using another aplication that works with the file system while doing file ops with explorer), 2) I did not like how the entire computer hangs for a few seconds in the other circumstances when the fix prevents the freeze. All in all my personal workaround to the explorer freeze is better to my taste as I am back on my feet within two seconds only whenever it happens. Any chance you remember the settings for increasing the size of the 32bit resources anonymous author of several patches ?
  2. Yes there is a list of hotfixes for ME that I compiled some time ago. It is a bit old so it may not be complete. It's from a little bit before the_guy started the ME service pack. Search the forum to find it. You'll find the rest under the WinME service pack thread.
  3. I can't elaborate on the IE shell extensions, though it makes sense since IE is integrated to the system and desktop, with all the webby stuff. As for NetBIOS, well, what's there to elaborate? It's installed by default, as far as I know, and listens for connections, which is known to be a big security risk. NetBIOS is that protocol that allows you to share files and printers. It would be nice if you could give some examples. Say I have my machine connected to the internet without a firewall, and with file and printer sharing disabled, and I let it sit like that, what can happen ?
  4. Sorry to dig out this old thread but this does not appear to be correct, at least not the first part of it.
  5. Not entirely true. There are a couple IE shell extensions, and of course NetBIOS is installed by default. Can you clearly elaborate on both the points you make ?
  6. Use NDN to do all that. Powerful freeware dos file manager. Navigate to the cab dir with it. It can search within archives, open them and extract files from them. http://ndn.muxe.com/beta/ http://ndn.muxe.com/download/file/12 It's on the Ultimate Boot CD also. Much easier than typing all that.
  7. I don't think there should be a particular problem with having revpack and upgrading to XP. Where you might have a problem is that you'll probably need a Win98 CD to put in the CD drive at some point of the XP install and I understand you haven't got one. Don't expect marvels from XP though. I have just finally installed in a virtual machine a full OEM XP Pro SP2 I bought almost a year ago, to do some stability, performance and security tests and I don't think I'll ever actually upgrade to that OS or newer from Microsoft on a real machine.
  8. You can have a look at that as well : http://www.cylog.org/utils_4.asp http://www.cylog.org/graphics_3.asp
  9. No you won't avoid problems with partitions. There is a long thread about all that. Please read it.
  10. Maybe they just need a red background and not a pink one. The avi for emptying the recycle bin has a red background and it appears transparent. Also I did not find the 2k color scheme as a choice in the list for an account I have created after applying the patch. Maybe it should be installed there : HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes
  11. I don't think Orca itself runs under the 9x platform. Msis can be extracted easily with a command line tool called msix
  12. 1) I don't think it damages the MBR but the FAT certainly. 2) Yes it will do the same damage to the first partition.
  13. Installed it yesterday on NT4 I have in a virtual machine. It's nice. Well done. The icons do not update even after reboot unless I go in the Plus tab of the display properties and select big icons, apply and deselect it to go back to normal icons. And this on copy, move, delete : Emptying the recycle bin transparency is fine.
  14. Unless I am totally mistaken, one can't enter like that in your system unless your run some server software to which an external client can connect.
  15. If you haven't got a CD, it's going to be hard. Get yourself a CD on eBay I would suggest. After that you can restore all files modified by rev pack by hand.
  16. Thanks erpdude, I have emailed MS about it. I'll leave Woody outside of it for the time being. Edit : Microsoft has been very prompt to answer, within a couple of hours, and also very nice. After 24 hours they did let me know that they had opened a case. They'll be in touch with me when they have more information. I'll let you know what goes on.
  17. Well there is no problems with Windows Media Player 9. If like me, you don't like the player itself, just reassociate your files with another player such as maybe Media Player 6.4 through its options dialog. The thing is you need to install it if you want to play most on-line wmv content. That's why I just did install it myself.
  18. One pack has been made. Search and you'll find a thread in the service pack subforum. Revive it if the download is dead so that someone can upload it again.
  19. As this vm3.exe is meant to attack NT systems (it crashes on 9x OSes), I believe this javascript vulnerability exists on all MS OSes and versions of IE otherwise it does not make sense to set a trap like that. Anyway I'll PM you my email so you can send me this Vista jscript.dll for a try. Edit : Thanks the_guy. Still vulnerable with this build 5.7.0.5744 from Vista RC2. I bet this exploit also screws the supersecure Vista machines then. How can we make Microsoft aware so that they fix it ? They have to fix it if it affects also XP and Vista.
  20. I get the same thing on my WinME + IE6 SP1 system with jscript.dll v5.7.0.5730 So it means that all our 9x systems are vulnerable to that nasty javascript exploit, no matter how well updated they are. NOT really, or only if you make a rod for your own back. I mean WHY use IE6? Just use Firefox. If you have to use IE5/6 then do so only on a trusted site. That's not really an answer to the problem. Besides, there is no trusted site as any site could be hacked and pages infected with a script like that. And a rogue chm file from a download or another could also be infected. I have just build one with only that script in it and it is vulnerable.

  22. In addition to what glock_94 says above, which is the first thing to do, you may indeed want to use scanreg/restore or restore an old registry from dos. What may be bad news is that there is one version of the revpack that deletes the sysbackup folder and I am almost sure it is this one. If so all your registry backups are gone for good. For some very odd reason tihy refused to fix that one line in the install batch file at the time.
  23. Much nicer indeed. WinME Defrag ain't bad either with a 256 color icon.
  24. It also normally optimizes the registry files, it compresses them if there is more 500kb of empty space in them and provided they are smaller than 8MB. And it does not backup the registry at each reboot btw. Only once per day max. I would not recommend disabling it.
  25. Thanks, I have just tried this jscript.dll 5.7.0.5730 and it is vulnerable to the exploit here. I only have IE 5.5 installed. Can someone try it with IE6 to see if it makes a difference ?
