  1. Try one of the keep alive utilities. Here's a trialware that I'd tried out sometime back 42 Always-Connected Plug This app keeps pinging a predefined site at regular intervals. Hope it's of some help.
  2. Well the line still disconnects on the other pc, so now the problem is definitely at the ISP level.
  3. [deXter] Thanks for the response. Got a pc with internal modem from a friend, will be trying the line on it tonight. I was actually, wanting to set the connection such that if the download speed goes below, say 1kbps, the line would disconnect and redial to the ISP. If a keep alive like sending a ping to a particular site or loading a particular page, at regular times could be possible it would be nice too. If you could help me with setting this up, it would be quite helpfull. A bat file, a script, anything.
  4. firefoxthebomb The broadband line has a limit on the downloads - 5 GB in a year. So I mostly use it for surfing. On the other hand the Dialup is unlimited so I use that for P2P. markw I didn't try this modem on the other system, but I did try an Internal modem on this system. And the problem remains, so I guess we have to strike out hardware failure at the modem end. Had formated and reinstalled the OS a few days back, not related to this prob, so we strike out the reinstall option too I guess. And wrong guess, about the tracebility on a dialup thing, just want to exploit the dialup in the nightime. Thanks for your inputs, any more suggestions wellcome. Would surely like to solve this problem.
  5. Hi, I'm having WinXp pro SP2, with a dialup connection on an external modem. I use my comp for P2P, so it's on particularly 24 hours. The trouble is that in the nights, the line tends to hangup or idle. By idle I mean that it shows as connected, but no data is transfered either up or down. Sometime when I wake up and check the browsing, pages just don't load and there's a timeout. Disconnection and reconnection does not help, and a full reboot is required. I've used a few 3rd party wares like HiDialer 2000, SPdialer, 42 always connected Plug, to name a few, which work ok for a few days but then it's back to normal. HiDialer even has a keep alive, where it pings a defined site at regular interval's to simulate browsing activity. Is there any way to solve this problem within WinXp. Any other solutions also wellcome. Could this be a modem error. Note: Pls do not suggest shifting to a broadband, I already have a 1 MBps as an alternate, but want to use the dialup to the full extent. Thanks.
  6. Simple and informative. Loads fast from a Dialup too. Nice work John Paul
  7. I've not fully tried it myself, so don't know about all the features.
  8. Would you like it delivered by a Blonde or a Red head.
  9. "Learn to speak Spanish v2.8" a shareware www.softpile.com/Education/Language/Review_20786_index.html should get you through. It even has a voice feature so you can check your pronounciation's. Hope it takes you where you wanna be with your girl
  10. I use Alcohol 120% too. Just 'cause it serve's as a burning s/ware and supports virtual drive. No prob with it. Worth a try.
  11. I've got the current version of ZA and have experienced no problem as such. Am using it on a WinXPSp2 and Win98se, both are ok. Been using ZA since a long time and am quite satisfied with it. It is a bit slow at startup but if you think about it, ZA blocks those pesky Pop-ups, check's and inform's you of your AV updates, block's unwanted Cookies and even clean's your Cache. For all that a little slowness is fine by me.
  12. Thanks for the input's soulin & un4given1 . is there any freeware 3rd party software that you could suggest.
  13. I tried out the the RDC like Ge0ph suggested, Step-by-Step. My setup is, my pc has WinXPproSP2 and the other (my brother's pc) Win98se. From the Win98 pc I'm getting total access to the WinXp sys. But the same doesn't work the other way. So does the RDC work only one way or is there a work around to this ? Also taking the dynamic IP thing into consideration, you would need someone to tell you the client's IP, is there a way around for this too?
  14. Last time I had a similar problem, it turned out to be a faulty RAM. So get yourself "memtest" and run a through test. It runs of a floppy too.
  15. search on Google and only if no solutions can be found, post.
  16. First a search on Google and then post.
  17. most of the sharer's on the donkey network, including your's truly, are supporting the grid project. since the pc's are always on and a little bandwidth to a good good cause will cause no harm. hope more join in.
  18. Language in the house - Kannada (Can Speak, Can't read or write) Language in the locality - Marathi, Hindi (Can Speak, Read, Write) Language on Net - English (Can Speak, Can read and write a bit) @pratapml nice thread, and from the input's a successful one too.
  19. Nothing but rap. Especialy HipHop. Fav's Eminem, 50 cents. And in local flavour, anything composed by A.R.Rahman.
  20. And a pretty good info IMO. Was using the older 3.7 and loved the fact that I could try out the features of Linux without acrually having to install it on the HDD. Will be giving this one a go, just to check out the new features.
  21. Been using ZoneAlarm for over a year and never had any problem's. Even with the P2P, since I've kept the required ports open. It does have an inbuilt Ad-blocking feature, which seems to be doing a good job, since I don't have any third party pop-up killers on my machine. And a big plus, since it integrates with your Anti-Virus, it even warns you of any updates are available for it.
  22. i'd been using a 64kbps with 8kbps d/l and 5kbps u/l on P2P. just recently shifted to a 1Mbps line which sucks big time. am online check at Mcaffee shows that my speeds fluctuate between 50kbps to 1100kbps. but persistent complaints have yeilded no results. the admin accepts this error but since the ping to their server is giving a constant 1000, he refuses to troubleshoot. Well since we don't have any laws for the ISP's in India, there ain't nothing to be done on this. BTW my ISP is Exattnet. @ phoenix_nf i'm from Mumbai too. who is your ISP.
  23. Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, light on resources and functional. And going by the highest vote's it got (over 22%) seems to be popular out here too.
