ner - Norton Ghost 2003 was the exact s/ware, that did the trick. Though it does need to reboot to dos. But this app solved my prob. Created a spaned bootable (hi-compressed) image of the HDD. Thanks.

Thanks to all for the replies. brelfielfan - Could you provide more details, regards the settings etc. I've been unable to do what you suggest. I'm having a 7gb partition for WinXp which is having over 5gb of unused space. I used high compression and what I got was a 663mb file which is though compact is not bootable. firefoxthebomb - Will give Norton a try. And I did clean up the sys of all temp files, prefetch, offline pages, temp files, cache, etc, before I did the above mentioned image. And I'd even done a defrag to keep the files nice and tight. And I already have the restore option disabled on my pc. ner - That's just what I wanted to do, create a bootable Ghost image. Are you referring to Norton 2003 ?? EDIT - Seems like there is already a thread on this issue HERE. My apologies for not using the search option first.

Needed to create a bootable image of the HDD, so that I could just reboot from the CD and restore to a particular state. Tried out Acronis True Image v8 and Symantec Norton Ghost v9, but both create an exact image of the entire drive (blank space included), which ends up to be huge. And both need to make a bootable floppy to load the images from the CD or any media the images are stored in. I'd been using some s/ware some time back, I think it was an older version of Symantec Ghost, which had a feature where you could just make a bootable image of the OS and data part, thereby omitting the blank space and with compression this image could be written on one single CD. Could someone suggest any s/ware to do this. Or maybe some setting's which I might be required on the above mentioned softwares. And I do have an unattended CD, but wanted have a sort of image of the drive to restore from. thanks.

Andromeda43 - Gotta agree that there is a tad bit of a slang in the English language of the American's which might be causing some problems in any verbally communication. Did'nt mean to start an "Andromeda bashing" round here. Hoping that we've sorted this out. Peace. The oursourcing can't be blamed on some particular country, it's the corporate's who decide this, for cost cutting and hence higher profits. So blaming India or China or any other such country would be quite baseless. Just made a dual boot with Win98se and WinXp, though the display is ok on WinXp, it's real bad on Win98. Searched around and the only driver's available are for Win2K up. Anyone know or got a working driver for Win98se. Or any workaround for the display issue. Ty.

If you read and understand what I've typed, then this is one of the language's that we speak, read and write quite fluently. Just so you know there are school's and college's that teach the English language, where most of us have got our education. The companies go for it since they have to pay lesser, taking that the cost of living out here is much lower than say the US.

It could be a fact that most of the american's pay for the s/ware's, including the MS stuff, but totally unjustified in suggesting the other's don't. I ain't trying to justify the piracy thing, just pointing out that a reduced price can totally kill pirated stuff. And regards the "Can't pay Don't buy" thing. This is one of the reason's Linux is turning out to be the favourite amongst many people here, at least.

Had a somewhat similar situation, turned out to be a faulty power supply. Try using your power supply on her sys to check.

HDD Regenerator should help you out by rewritting the bad sector'. Though it's not free, but there's a trial version which recovers a few sector's maybe that would be all you need. About the overheating of the drive, I've noticed that by freeing up space helps out.

Tarun - They would make more or just about the same profit's, since here we're talking of quantity and possible a permanent solution of piracy. With regards the single user's ofcourse. IRON - Linux is targeting the single user's with just the quantity concept that I've mentioned above. After all how much will burning the software onto a few CD/DVD cost. Ain't that why the Linux distro's being sold for a bargain. As of now almost all the roadside guys selling the pirated stuff, have stoped stocking Microsoft ware's. It seems that Microsoft has employed a few local private eye's to check on them and immediately inform the nearest Police station, who then conduct a raid and detain the seller and destroy all the disk's in his position. Wouldn't it be a proper solution to spend all this time, funds and effort in coming up with a cheaper OS and programs and benifitting all.

I'm using version 1.0.5 and have no such problems. So my suggestion update to the current version.

Piracy is something that I feel is not restricted to the 3rd world countries. Why else would the p2p be so popular all around. If the developers themselves think of selling at lower prices would it not make sense to the consumers to buy it of the shelf rather than waste loads of expensive bandwidth and time trying to download it. Would'nt a lower price also mean more sales and just about the equal profit's for the developer. And also would an enduser not prefer to live at peace by buying stuff rather than having a fear of being caught sometime using pirated stuff.

Last I'd read some time back, was that Microsoft was planning to launch a lower localised version of WinXp, which would be much cheaper. Of course we should expect quite a lot of features to be missing from this version, if and when it comes out. I'm from Bombay, India and I've seen the pirated versions installed on quite a few of the commercial establishments and even some of the Co-operatives banks. This should be the target of Microsoft, on the raids which the company is known to conduct with the local police support, not the single user's.
