  1. Yes , exactly the same less amount (in Vista) with Nvidia HD audio almost everywhere. I only need DTS HD MA , I don't care about the other though. By the way , when I install Nvidia driver on Vista , it only adds simple "DTS-Audio" to supported formats (device properties) , while on Win7 it adds plenty of formats . It is intentional , I mean what prevents it to add more formats , it "sees" my HD capable devices (videocard and receiver) , so should be no problem , yet Nvidia doesn't want us to listen HD audio on Vista. I'm looking for a simple solution to unlock it. P.S. Much loved MPC-HC , apparently, hates Vista. When I manually choose and force playback of 5.1 HD tracks , it just plays them as poor quality 2.0 audio and blocks direct bypass completely ! So much for the popular player . I'm not sure what they have against Vista.
  2. Yeah , but how come this is not a problem for that Chinese player ? It plays HD tracks flawlesly , DTS HD MA , TrueHD and the such . I might even say the sound quality is far more superior than with most of the popular ones (commercial and "open" source) . All I want to say , I can live with this "glitchy" player as it (obviously) doesn't need anything to be replaced . I can tell how I trick it . 1 - Open the player (don't close) at this point it can play compressed DTS and AC3 only , 2 - Go to >playback devices< and choose >test supported formats< , play Dolby Digital test file , when Windows asks "did you hear the sound from your receiver?" answer yes and press ok . That's it - you can play ALL HD formats now , but only with this specific player . Somehow it hooks to it , while it is opened . So Vista is fully capable of playing HD formats without replaciing anything . I blame the Nvidia driver and/or some settings created by it. Which are easely bypassed by the Chinese player.
  3. Your observation is absolutely right , Vista audio drivers sound much better than the drivers that were meant for 7 , but not to the point of full satisfaction , not even close. In fact, Asus D2 Vista driver can be used without signature enforcement on 7 , but yet again , the audio is not punchy . It still sounds sandy and flat . Did you notice that Vista's audio drivers use DX10 when running on 7 ? Perhaps this is the reason they somewhat sound better. P.S. I had noticed many issues with 7 (like literally trembling opened windows , to the point where I can't even close them and the whole explorer just hangs up) Sorry . I'm not gonna argue about the other Win7 issues , like taskbar , if you choose to use Win7 (or whatever) - it's your choice . Yet again , in this topic we discuss our pleasant experience with Vista , not 7 or the such.
  4. I'm sorry , I do not agree . I use Windows starting from Win 93 , and I do not agree . In my opinion the best are Win 2000 (for it's time) and Vista. Always hated XP . XP is like oversaturated and bloated Win 2000. Win 7 is somewhat like Vista after unsuccessful plastic surgery and filled with toxins after that (I guess explains why it is slower).
  5. Hi , first off , I'm sorry to remind : this top is : Share your Windows >Vista< experience! and not about "the look of 7". There's too much to write about the differencies . Some of the ugliest things about Win 7 are : fonts (yes that "true" type ones) - washed out and blurry , oversaturated UI colours , like for ravers at the acid party. I always had the best monitors available , so I can tell. Also , sound , oh boy. It's nowhere near Vista's punchy and sharp audio quality . I have Asus D2 , so I can also tell the difference . Win 7 has fat , thick , flat , ugly taskbar . etc , etc , etc . P.S. Compare Vista's wonderful orb and Win 7 (I don't even know how to name that "acid something").
  6. I suspect that it is for creating registry entries with "HD" capable device strings under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\{my receiver auto generated id}\Properties] This one is interesting too , notice different "oem" for win7 and Vista. oem9.inf:NVIDIA.NTamd64.6.0:NVHDA64V:1.3.34.3:hdaudio\func_01&ven_10de&dev_0044 oem3.inf:NVIDIA.NTamd64.6.1:NVHDA64V:1.3.34.3:hdaudio\\func_01&ven_10de&dev_0044 If drivers gets 6.1 or anything higher , it will create those missing and/or different entries I was talking about earlier . They are auto generated and couldn't be added manually to stay forever , they will get erased and replaced with the non-HD strings. Nvidia forbids HD audio on Vista , even if you have HD capable device. By the way , this "issue" could be a lawsuit since Nvidia claims GTX780 full support on Vista , including HD audio. How to put it polite - customer misleading. In the meantime, I use that Chinese player with that pleasant "glitch", now I know how to replicate the glitch . It's not the best solution , I hope to get a fully working driver.
  7. Opera 72 with these latest files "SHAssocEnumHandlersForProtocolByApplication not found in SHELL32.dll".
  8. Hi. Just checked , the main driver nvhda64v.sys makes calls to PsGetVersion , so I think it is still used. Any way to cheat it without replacing ntoskrnl ? By the way , RtlGetVersion is absent .
  9. It's from 2013 or so . Acer Aspire E5-731-P3ZW (EU) - 17.3" - Nvidia 830m (V1), Intel Pentium 3556U , 8 GB DDR3L 1600Mhz (only in European model) , 1TB HDD . It's a rare EU version with Nvidia GPU , it's hard to find any info on that model . Almost all websites show that it doesn't have a discrete GPU , but mine has .
  10. I have a laptop with the dreaded optimus and don't know how to disable it via bios edit. The thing is , it has a fully supported (by Vista) Nvidia GPU and that "famous" dreaded Intel which has no drivers (Haswell). I had tried drivers for XP , but they BSOD , even with XP installed.
  11. Well , I don't think this will help because I've installed the driver manually, avoiding Nvidia's auto installer. I've spent another several hours trying different drivers and registry hacks. As far as I can see , there is just not enough info for the players to "see" HD audio capable device . Take a closer look at the Vista's registry entries under : [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\{my receiver auto generated id}\Properties] For example, HDAUDIO string is missing , compared to W7 entries . So I changed the .inf file (added everything from W7 sections to the Vista ones) and when I try to install this driver manually Vista says driver is not signed , I pressed ignore and the installation went ok , but it didn't change anything . Still not enough needed entries in the "MMDevices". It is painfully annoyning to add them manually for each device , esp. since the names are auto generated . At least now I know what's the culprit and who's to blame . I think Nvidia made it that way so one couldn't use HD audio on Vista. I will not purchase their products anymore . I've been their fan for almost 20 years. Any ideas ? Thanks.
  12. Well , I agree it makes sense for a laptop , but for a main PC ... why ? My Vista's boot time is 5-6 seconds on the gaming PC . What are the benefits in this case ? To make it 3-4 seconds ? Besides , 2.5tb isn't too much nowadays . I have my home video footage , clips from various trips and the such , which occupy more than 10TB. I think I'm a bit older than you , though ... so it had accumulated over the years. Also, I'm still not convinced in their ability to store information for a long time (without power) and their durability. I have 10 year old Raptors (under constant use) and they still going strong. P.S. I'm not using Win7/8/10 , and Vista doesn't do any annoynig constant writing to my HDDs.
  13. Yeah , I too use a 24' CCFL 15 year old monitor and loving it very much. But DTS HD MA is ancient by modern standards and should be supported by ancient hardware, including Realtek (for examplle 2nd Generation Intel Core mobo's) , Nvidia's cards starting from GTX460 (I think, maybe even earlier). Do you remember the times when there was a small cable that we needed to attach to the motherboard's SPDIF and connect to Nvidia's DVI to bypass the digital sound. GTX 8800 definitely had this "feature" . I guess Nvidia was cutting the costs of the production so we needed to use onboard sound , later they added their own chip and it 100% supports DTS HD MA , I guess starting from 2010 or so.
  14. Well , I have some news regarding HD audio on Vista . I have tested a ton of programs that support DTS HD MA passthrough to receiver and only one (I think Chinese) player was able to get it working for a small amount of time. The reciever confirmed that it is DTS HD MA and I definitely could hear the difference ! It was more like a glitch , when switching between files with DD 5.1 and DTS HD MA it switched to it and I was able to listen the file till the end , then it defaulted to compressed DTS again. Any ideas how to get it permanent ? Registry hacks are not working . It is definitely an artificial block . All I'm saing is that Vista's original files are capable of HD , just some setting prevents the use it. Honestly , I'm in shock . Don't any of you ,fellow members, use HD audio these days?
  15. Well , that link link that I sent , they were talking something about the browsers not being able to identify the locale . At least it seems to look like a good coincidence , didn't you hear , chromium on Vista is not able to identify the locale upon installing any extensions . Perhaps there's some truth to it ?
  16. Hello , i'm sorry I don't quite understand the purpose of this build. One won't be able to play with GT710. It's weak even for office use. If you insist on bying from Amazon.in only , then I'd suggest to replace it with GTX 950 2GD5 OCV1 , they are available there and it is fully supported on Vista. Also , maybe I'm a bit of old school , but I don't like SSDs , any of them. WD Blue 10EZEX is fast enough for this build. 550W (if it is a true 550W PSU) would be more than enough for this whole system with the replaced GPU.
  17. Well, it is sad, everything seems to be ok, except this. Have you ever thought of creating portable launchers to such evil programs/games with emulating options ? By the way , any news regarding Opera ? I've tried again with the newest files , nothing happens , it just doesn't show any errors . do you know why ? By the way , chromium also doesn't work without the flag mentioned by the banned user.
  18. Hi , I've come across this info "On Windows 7 and later operating systems, the .NET Framework retrieves culture data from the operating system ... The CultureNotFoundException is thrown if the operating system is unable to find the culture..." Is that true ? Isn't that why I can't solve this problem with the game ? Any other way to "tell" the game what culture is needed ? Thanks https://forums.asp.net/t/2080862.aspx?CultureNotFoundException+can+occur+when+culture+is+set+to+auto+in+web+config
  19. And I'm speaking from my experience too. I totally agree with the others : Driver Booster is far more superior, starting from the ancient times.
  20. Whaaat !??! It is way too expensive. Some prices are the same as here (like WD 1TB) . Don't buy Corsair. This model is cheaply made , the best PSU ever is FSP ATX 450PNF (this one can work for a decade without breaking a sweat) or FSP600-80GHN also good. As for the video card , the best is GTX780/Titan (7th gen.) I didn't like GTX970 , 1070 . Soon I will test GTX980 and if it is also bad , I'll find a used Titan.
  21. I was looking for these items in the US , with shipping to my country , the prices are for US , yes that ridiculous 50 bucks for G3470. By the way , our local second hand market is cheaper than used items on ebay , much cheaper . I'm so glad I bought everything I need back in the day. Regarding Amazon , it's not conveneint for me . Their shipping policies are awful . For exanple , I order several items in one order . They can easily send it with several deliveries ! And if ordering from the abroads , one can never know which company they will use for delivery ! I have had hard times with Fedex , so I do not want to use it ever again , yet I can't choose when ordering from Amazon , besides our local stores are much cheaper and they are close.
  22. There's nothing cheap nowadays . If you see a "cheap" price , that's for locals only . Ebay's "global shiping" price is just outrageous , it also has whooping fees , like for example , search for Intel G3470 , it costs somewhere between 40-50 USD , plus shipping (30 - 40 USD) , plus ebay fees "See import charges at checkout" and my country's VAT , it will be way over 120USD. I bought it NEW seven or six years ago for smth like 60 Euro (about 80 USD at that time). This used should cost no more than 20 bucks shipped. Will you find you find such price ? No . Edit : just checked videocards . OMG : 7- 8 y.o. GTX780 for 130 - 250 USD , plus shipping, starting from 70 and up to 180 USD !!! (plus my country tax)
  23. well , I thought so, but thanks for checking. I don't actually think I'm gonna need any of those . I play old games .
  24. Yes , it is blazingly fast. No need for expensive hardware.
