I have seen around same age laptop booting Windows 3.1. That laptop did not have any documentation with it and finding info is hard as it is Olivetti rebranded to digital. I have that laptop still but without understanding error codes I cant swap rechargable cmos battery. I installed one to it which had same voltage and laptop turned off every so often blinking heart symbol on LCD which I assume means system health warning. When I pulled battery it worked and still works great just need reconfigure bios on every boot. I also was able to salvage very rare WSOY EN-FI dictionary program (1991) from it hard drive that runs on DOS and WIN16 (it runs even on XP).

Multi-boot Windows 9x with current GNU/Linux
Nokiamies replied to Wunderbar98's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
They are not too bad to run but problem is that many programs use those as unnecessary depency. For example firefox by default wont work without pulseaudio without good reason but you can make it work without. SystemD, Dbus, Pulseaudio etc are more things that power user may not want in their system but for average mortal does not have to worry about them. I recommend newbie to just get just work distro like Linux mint or Salix and not think Artix, Devuan or Gentoo and avoiding pulseaudio and others before is advanced enough (and even then is not requirement) If systemd would be my biggest worry and not worry from making enough to to pay bills or any other actual issues I would be happy -
for me google vs apple vs Microsoft is same s*** with different as*****. Apple privacy thing is straight out lie to attract consumers. Apple made their tracking blocking thing to have ad monopoly that would force every ad company pay them for data. Also apple super privacy respecting setup requires you to activate device on apple servers. Also Apple uses privacy as excuse to make side loading of apps in Macos hard/Make it impossible on iOS and in name of security they try block you from maintaining your own devices. So they are no different than other violators and it is totally foolish to believe that publicly traded company would care from your privacy and would not sell your data to get more earnings for shareholders. Thing is that these days privacy is best marketing term for anything. Last time I saw honest company was Google around 2010 when their CEO said that if you do not want them to see your files do not upload files to their service and that is redpill many are not ready to swallow even today because they are not comfortable with fact that no company cares from your rights or privacy and only want to lure you believe so. I assume I will get plenty of "look this research or whitepaper that proves your FUD wrong" like always when I question their precious companies (not talking from you rather that diehard part)

All I can say is that here we go again. Lot of people around me keep saying they will never ever go to Windows 11 from Windows 10 and will boycott Microsoft for bad decisions. Same people said that they wont go to Windows 10 from Windows 8 or 7 and guess what OS they use now? Windows 10. I bet in few months most of them are running Windows 11 only. Why do everyone say things they wont stand behind? I am not saying that just give up and go all to Windows 11 and all other M$ products and give them thousands of euros, rather stick on your words or make more realistic plan like I will only use Windows 11 where I really have to and will prefer have main system with older version of Windows or go to linux like me. Currently got two Windows 8+ system I use. One is workplace laptop with Windows 10 and second is my LAB system running Windows 11 for testing purposes and it is located on isolated network that is behind separate IP and wont have access to my personal network. Currently that lab system is running Linux though. And if someone want use Windows 11 that is fine too but my point is don't say things you wont mean. I just wonder how much more consumers are able to stand? I guess they would even be fine mandatory for retina scan every time they want use their PC (facial scan exist already called Windows Hello but that is not forced for now) and even if machine would lock them out after they were looking wrong information like what is wrong with this system.

Also Nightmare on Elm Street 3 had PC/AT compatible with Windows 1.0 in background on one scene. Maybe that was real nightmare on movie . P.S I have almost that compaq laptop but it is slightly newer Compaq contura CX430 with 100mhz 486 cpu. Old compaqs are near unkillable laptops. Few years ago I found one old article from that series of notebooks and some complained they had issues running Windows 95 but luckily I never had those.

how much your iguana costed you on wall repairs ? most geckos need heated rock with uv light to rest since will simulate the natural resting in sunlight for them. They spend most of time in dark ares and temperature must be bit over normal room temp (20c) and in winter you cant ventilate that room to avoid freezing your lizard. Exotic animals are very prone to cold and right now we got -22c and dropping so that must be taken in consideration. they are very intelligent since they know to come out when they hear familiar voice and will come closer to wall when they see familiar face. Also they know when is feeding time and come out when that happens even if food is not ready. They got very good memory for that sized animal. I almost spit my morning coffee to monitor when saw this

Like I said this was not pointed to you. I meant I do not like to be called fan when you said "Windows fans" because fans are thing I hate. I know you are aware of Linux problems since wont run Ubuntu and thinking are super unhackable, rather devuan and avoid all bad things on mainstream distros but meant Linux community overall that does not like any critics or words that could be improved and any other community does same Speaking that Mozilla thread it was not to bash Mozilla rather raise awareness from doublespeak and lies they do because best way to change things is raise awareness of people who were not aware of them. Only way change problems is make everyone aware of it, but problem with that is that taking red pill and see the truth is harder than taking blue pill and believe whatever you want and internet is full of examples of that. I would not be surprised if my different opinion would have caused outrage is Mozilla diehard reddit. And I wont talk bad from things to shill some fake projects like brave unlike some do. And I am not any anti Linux user. I got Linux running network level firewall, DHCP, Content filters (Pihole to block some things I do not want in my network). I also use Linux on main workstation and all servers exposed internet are running Linux and only allow Windows powered servers work on isolated LAN behind VPN. And what are browser choices for Linux? Well GNU Librewolf which is Latest FF without most nasty stuff and secondary browser I use is SeaMonkey and then for anything that does not need "modern" browser I use Webbrowser which is Palememe based and I also use Iceape UXP. If you still think I am Linux and Gecko engine hater then it must be that way. there seems to be rule that before some thing is mainstream it is hard to use but generally has better feature set instead of having nasty stuff and whenever some thing becomes more mainstream is start turning into bad. One benefit of Linux compared to Windows is that Kernel is open source like desktop and toolkit and there is some very good distros like Salix (easiest to configure), Devuan (allow control without too much hassle), Artix Linux (for those who actually want control over OS and not just brag off like arch users) and Gentoo (for those who got no life and got plenty of free time to compile, but in other hand you get more freedom to decide what your system will have.) -
Long ago I used one spare Pentium 4 machine with 512mb of RAM to run game servers with WS2003 R2. Most important thing to remember is use proper hardware firewall between server and internet and ONLY allow ports that you need and I recommend high non standard ports and block pinging of port since that will reduce change of port scan attack. Any Windows or Linux or even BSD based server will get hacked if you leave all ports open. It is like leaving door open instead of small window to get fresh air. For web server I highly recommend against using id*** Information services since back in day that was room for worms like Code Red worm long ago. Also I recommend against wordpress. Use only apache and that way you are less vurneable. Sorry that cant tell how do that firewall thing on VPS since I self host all of my servers to have better access over them and have hacker proof killswitch (pull the plug) but it control panel should allow port blocking I guess

Multi-boot Windows 9x with current GNU/Linux

in my experience they used equally amount of ram. Linux mint 32 and 64 bit uses around 1gb of ram and salix uses around 400mb of ram with my config on 64 and 32bit. So salix got less extra clutter by default but it also mean it wont have things like timeshift (linux version of system restore), update manager but you need to pick between which feels best. Like I said usb Live USB to see yourself which suites best. Here is downloads Salix: https://www.salixos.org/download.html Linux Mint LTS (long term support) releases since you are not bleeding edge kid and likely prefer stuff not change too rapidly: Linux Mint 19 Tara supported until 2023 https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=256 Linux Mint 20 Ulyana supported until 2025 https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=283 -
Multi-boot Windows 9x with current GNU/Linux

I got two suggestions that offers live cd to test OS fully before you start formatting drive to it. Both of them are beginner friendly and browse web wont need do any command line things. Also both can configure windows dualboot and partition automatically without lot of hassle Salix OS and Linux mint are my recommendation. Linux mint is based on Ubuntu and got wider support for software but it got some bad things like system D. If you use pick XCFE desktop as it wont need 3d acceleration. It got graphical application installer for additional software. Salix OS is Slackware based but got GUI for installing packages and softwares and got pretty decent software collection out of box but follows one program per task philosophy and most important to me lacks systemD. Why is systemD so bad? It limits freedom of choice. and should I go with Salix? No. You can test both and see which fits for best for you using livecd. And at the end things like freedom choosing init systems and others wont mean a thing when going first time to linux so pick whatever works for you out those two. You can later decide what path you want take but you cant take path if pulled off from it. And order you install them is XP first then Linux that grub loader will take over and work with both. Just keep spare linux install medium around if you accidentally hose up the bootloader -
surprised that so small parrot was able to be grow without mother. That is way smaller than budgie eggs I have seen hatching. Feeding formula is important on handfeeding and keeping good hygiene. You need boil formula mix and cool it down and disinfect hands before handling baby budgie. They got no immune system and any bacteria can be lethal.

Multi-boot Windows 9x with current GNU/Linux

I do not like to be called fan as fans are most toxic form of community. They refuse to see problem with whatever they are using, blindly defend any decision related company or other behind project and harass and haunt anyone who suggest that even single thing could be improved. For me it is whatever work best for use case and most of time modern operating system or device fails to fulfill that task. For some modern windoze 11 PC might fulfill for some full Linux use may fulfill it and that is great if does but some (not all) are ignoring those who cant make it fullfill their tasks and insist them to use it. I am running linux on my router and servers plus use it for banking but for some things like gaming, office tasks at home, listening to music, editing older windows just works so damn well and that is why I keep it. I hate when someone insists "you need go to newer or other platform despite current one works perfectly for you" but are so insulted if someone else say their platform is bad. I can admit, 98 is stable as nitroglycerin sometimes, Windows XP is stable but has flaws like Internet Exploiter and WPA but many of things that are issues to me on older version of Windows either have not been fixed or gotten worse. And we cant just accept that there is latest and greatest Windoze, Macos and Linux as only options on market. Two of those are going fast downfall and Linux has it own flaws community refuses to admit like lack of support for some programs, lack of gui support (which by the way cannot be ignored with freedom to control excuse, not all of are skilled or willing to tweak all trough command line. Try setup bind9 with gui that are near nonexisting vs Windows server DNS, I bet you will cry for bind9 refusing to start without proper error), big corporations having too much control over features implemented with SystemD and Pulseaudio. Sure you can have SystemD and Pulseaudio free distro but that is band aid fix as companies will work on making those two depencies lets take GNOME and Firefox as example (which is owned by google by the way) and bet in future more and more will depend on it so deeply you cant run away from features they want to force down user throat. Also did you know that evil Microsoft contributes to linux kernel these days so just wait until they start add unwanted stuff there too. Linux is not community run project rather controllerd by big corpos (And I know Linux is kernel not OS before someone says so and know it is GNU/Linux unless use some custom distro, but kernel can shape OS) This turned into rant but I had to say my word on this. There is not perfect or even good solution anymore if go with new stuff and old one can be fight against windmills (but I will take that challenge to have freedom over OS I use) and fans are reason why this world turned into such mess it is now. If all would have had judged corpos as they did bad things and would have boycotted them none of this would be issue now. But sadly most are too diehard fans to admit anything being wrong with their precious products. I sh1t on everything problems, be that oldschool Nokia, Symbian, Windows 95-Windows 7, Linux, Saab, Volvo, Honda or other thing and only reason why I say against badmouthing is when I hear completely false claims from something that people without knowledge says. P.S This is nothing personal to you just that I expressed my opinion Ok enough posting stuff to this thread So it can stay on topic. Just wanted put my word here since there is rarely linux talk. Maybe someone need open thread to linux where can talk from this. This owl will be flying away and wait for other threads to talk -
here we need uv lamp too and also geckos need warm rock for few hours a day that is heated with uv lamp. They go and rest there like they would in sun on nature my family member gecko used to have trait to miss it living food (it is served with moving bugs once a day to keep natural hunting up) and smash nose first to rock. Surprised she did not broke anything. Also she did not like wheel placed on cage and kept climb to rock wall until it was taken away.

meant qecko is more of night animal and mostly comes out when dark. It stays up around same time. There is artificial lights to keep it sleeping routing way it is awake with owners.
-
one of my family members got Leopard gecko as pet and know how lizards are. They are awake while most sleep since light. It can be controlled with lamps but sometimes blocking all natural light is hard if got no own room to it. I personally only had fishes in past. Been thinking get Budgerigar parakeet but right now got no time to spend with them so out of question. I admit at current state of world I would be bad pet owner and will wait for better time. Well it is future plans.

Multi-boot Windows 9x with current GNU/Linux

I may need give that a shot. but..but big companies said it is so I cant question them. Life taught me that most of modern tech is done too complex and poorly designed making it horrible for purpose it was designed for. Take modern TV example. It got homecall features that cant be disabled and it lacks many features my old tv got. -

I agree with this. Office programs only gotten more heavy over time and added useless features. Office 97 was first MS office that did not suck but it issue with crashing was since it drew dialog menus using it own graphics not windows native menus that could result to low resources and crashing. I tried office softwares on my netbook too and starting libreoffice with ssd took 2 minutes. -
I did not include links since codecs may or may not be allowed here since some of them are in grey zone since "they are stealing" at least in DMCA law that wont apply here. Codecs are hosted in Finnish sites and none of them has not been taken down. You can search those with duckduckgo and will find multiple clean download links for them. Feels stupid that I would have to pay to be able play some type of video or DVD I got. I can understand paying for player device but not for software. I used to call Maxtor drives Maxturds for reliability issues. I had one 40gb Maxtor that had only half usable even after wiping drive. Older ones were fine I guess. Second horrible was Quantum drives especially LCT series. I have 15gb one and it had plenty of bad blocks and know one of those drives that had controller glowing red. Both of companies were sold to Seagate later I think. Older Seagates before they bought Maxtor and Quantum were pretty good. I got bunch of 20gb drives from them as spares. Those were everywhere here. Compaq, HP, Pohjanmaan mikro and most custom computers from era had one.

I supposed post some of my latest testing earlier, but it has been delayed since I had bit of accident with my trusty old headphones. I stepped into wire while moved up from seat and well guess what happened. I have been looking spare for while and finally did find good one with 40mm audio elements. I need larger headphone cups for comfort since got big head. Seems finding non wireless headphones today is hard and most of them are studio or TV headphones that are wired. Also got spare headphone until new one arrives so could finish my testing. Ok now to test results. I was experimenting with codecs on older windows versions. Two test systems were my custom Pomi-pc 800 with Pentium 3 EB 800mhz, Nvidia TNT2 M64 32mb, 512mb ram, Windows 98 Second Edition with Micro shell as OS and Compaq Presario 5000 with Intel Celeron 850mhz, TNT Riva 16mb, 256mb ram and Windows Millennium edition (it is close enough to windows 98SE with few minor tweaks and drivers and programs under the hood so mention it here). I installed following codecs for both Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2007-02-22.exe and ffdshow_rev2322_20081114_clsid.exe I wont link files here since codecs are sorta grey zone in legality and not sure if violation of board rules but if someone from moderators confirms it is ok I will link them here. Personally I say if I download free codec packs from internet and it will result for someone to run out of business it is their fault for not having proper business plan and relying all into that stupid codec. Codec packs been around since forever and they wont go anywhere in future. I tested codecs with MP4 files under Media player 6.4 on Windows 98SE with 98micro shell and under Media player 7.1 on Windows Millennium edition. On both platforms playback was smooth and only issue occured on some 1 hour MP4 file but shorter ones played just fine. I need re-encode that file for more efficient settings and try again. Here screenshots from players. I could not include video since windows does not support capturing video to screenshot but you can see MP4 playing on them. Pomi with Windows 98 and Media player 6.4 and since early 2000 pc must play early 2000 music video. compaq with slightly faster cpu (800 vs 850mhz) and media player 7.1. This is vanilla non lited Windows ME install that can see from Evie the Evil "e" logo on quick launch. Video runs smoothly too. Also for last thing protip to make 16:9 videos play forcefully on 4:3 aspect ratio (not always good idea) since most likely uses CRT or other 4:3 monitor with Windows 98. Go to ffdshow video decoder configuration on start menu, then go to Resize&aspect and toggle resize checkbox and click specify aspect ratio and set it 4:3. After that select no aspect ratio correction on aspect ratio menu below it and click apply. I attach picture from what it should be since it is easier tell from picture. That seems work decently on videos and solves black border on top and bottom. Be aware that also will make some things look strange so your mileage may ware

start by installing 98LITE free version from litepc.net it will allow all expect micro config. Then choose shell swap and pick either sleek (windows 95 shell) or chubby (win98 shell with IE bloat disables). You can do it on a fly and revert back to default is regret without reinstall. That will already make it more snappy I am running 98lite pro with Micro shell on my 800mhz Pentium 3 and it flies. that is not issue until wallpaper needs to be redrawn. Lets imagine you have window filling whole screen and you minimise it. Windows 95/98 redraws desktop wallpaper. I mostly see it on pentium class machines.

I had same issue on my lab setup also running ryzen. Microsoft did release patch but when I installed it same issue still. I experienced high cpu usage and slowdowns that did not exist win10. It was known issue according MS and maybe there is patch but for me going to buggy beta software is not worth it. At the end what super impressive to end user MS has brought after win7? For me only recisting more freedom and control over my OS (That actually started on windows 98)

time from power button to desktop is not whole loading time always. Operating system might be still loading modules on background. Also boot time is not only thing measured in performance. Response time on desktop is more important to me. Some high end servers i worked with takes 10 minutes to boot and my old digital laptop from 1994 takes around 30 seconds so does this mean that laptop is faster? No.
