  1. I want to install Windows Vista x64 alongside Windows XP x64, but I want to retain Windows XP's bootloader with the recovery console as an option. Is that possible, how do I go about it?
  2. I've noticed that on both Windows XP and Vista. I also noticed that Pale Moon would struggle to open a lot of web pages. Both of those problems seem to have stopped all of a sudden.
  3. Ooh, how are you tricking the installer into thinking that you're on Vista? I heard that Pale Moon doesn't support XP anymore because they're using a newer SDK from Microsoft or something. I agree. I would take Windows 8 over Me, but Me definitely has the superior interface. The inner workings of Windows 8 really seem impressive, if only it had a sensible interface. Unfortunately that seems to be what sidelines most computers that otherwise stand the test of time. More JavaSludge* and Adobe Flush** content is what everyone wants nowadays. Around July/August last year, something very interesting happened with Flash Player, it got better! All of a sudden, playing 360p YouTube videos in full screen on a Pentium M was doable again, and with CPU cycles to spare. I believe it was because Flash Player had been optimized for less powerful hardware, so all of us on dinosaur computers got to reap the benefits. *JavaScript **Adobe Flash Player
  4. I'm using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition right now on a Core i5 with 4GB of RAM, it's fantastic. Windows 7 is honestly a nice version of Windows (and a great operating system in general), but despite using it on and off since the middle of 2010 or so, I've never warmed up to it like I did Windows XP. The moral of the story is that you should use what works best for you, and that isn't necessarily what works best for someone else. There is an official Atom/XP version of Pale Moon that works fine in XP (and on any CPU, not only Atom processors). Binary Outcast (aka Matt A Tobin) offers an up to date (25.3.1 as of today) 3rd party contributed Pale Moon for XP. There is even a contributed Pale Moon for SSE that runs on venerable SSE-only processors (Pentium III / Athlon XP). FYI the XP/Atom build of Pale Moon also works on Windows 2000 with the unofficial updates, but for some reason it won't install (even using the Application Compatibility Launcher) until regular Firefox is installed first. I didn't notice that. Probably because I've only just started using Adobe Reader after using Acrobat for so long.
  5. So, here we are, April 8th, 2015 and Windows XP is still alive and kicking. I for one am still using it on my main computer and the only compatibility issues that I've experienced were from Pale Moon and Java 8, yet both still work without modification to the OS due to certain circumstances. Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox still work fine, Adobe Flash Player works fine, Apache OpenOffice works fine, Adobe Reader works fine, K-Lite Codec Pack works fine, and the POSReady 2009 updates (or in my case the Server 2003 updates) haven't made Windows catch fire yet.
  6. Which versions of Unofficial Update Rollup did you try? Is this a fresh install? What kind of computer is it? What other software are you installing before UUR?

    Hideous!

It's looking more and more like we're not going to get Windows back with a proper UI. Unless Windows 10 has the classic theme. Yeah right...
  8. For now I've switched to using Windows Classic with the Ignore Aero theme in Thunderbird. I noticed that the Australis versions of Firefox also have that white-ish coloured title bar with Windows Vista's Aero enabled, so I'm guessing it's built into the programme and can't be changed easily.
  9. Yes, that is exactly what I mean. I tried the Ignore Aero add-on. It definitely works, but not quite the way I want it to. Instead of just ignoring Aero, it actually applies a custom theme that mimics that of Thunderbird 3.x, which is nice, but ultimately it's not what I want right now. I also tried: - NoGlass - Only removed the dark blue/black Aero colour from the title bar. - Various others that weren't as close. - xpDefault - Closest I've gotten so far, just missing the dark blue/black colour from the title bar http://s25.postimg.org/gjvcs40kf/xp_Default_with_Aero.png That is exactly how I want it, minus the pale blue where the dark blue/ black Aero should be. See how the pale blue thing doesn't fit properly around the minimize, maximize and close buttons? The add-on is advertised as being for Windows 7, which has bigger window control buttons. Does that mean it's an image of sorts that can be removed?
  10. I've noticed that Mozilla Thunderbird looks different with Windows Aero enabled than it does without it. Thunderbird 31.5.0 with the unmodified Windows 2000-style classic theme. Thunderbird 31.5.0 with Aero Notice the white/light grey colour on the Aero title bar instead of the usually dark blue/black. Thunderbird seemingly has different appearances depending on what visual style you are using. I prefer the appearance you get with the classic theme, and I want to know if it's possible to make it use that appearance under Windows Aero. OS is 32 bit Vista Business with Service Pack 2.
  11. Thanks! That wasn't what I was looking for, but it worked out great nonetheless. Man, it's a lot easier downloading the updates from somebody else's web site than it is Microsoft's!
  12. About six months ago, I stumbled across a post (or similar) here on the forum where somebody stated that they had collected updates for Server 2003 since April and had made them available for download as a pack of some sort, so they could be installed on a live system. I had also collected the Server 2003 updates for my own installations. Long story short, I don't have access to those updates at the moment, and after doing a fresh XP Pro x64 install on a Dell Latitude D630, quite frankly I don't feel like downloading them all again. So it is that I'm asking if anyone knows of any update "packs" for XP Pro x64 that contain the recent Server 2003 updates, and can be installed on a live system.
  13. In case nobody noticed, Microsoft Update is working on NT 5.x again. I wonder how long it'll be before it breaks again.
  14. Holy cats, Windows Update does work in Firefox, but you need the IE tab add-on. How exactly are you doing that? It sounds like a great workaround. On a related note, I still have yet to figure out why Microsoft has two different update websites that seemingly do the exact same thing.
  15. Windows Update in Firefox? You have my attention.
  16. I'd love to be able to try out KB3034344 for Windows XP, but unfortunately Microsoft Update is not working for me. It just gives me a 0x80248015 error. Curiously enough, Windows Update on XP seems to work. I dunno...
  17. A drive that big surely must have 4KB sectors. The difference between ATA and AHCI is that ATA is a SATA compatibility mode that emulates an IDE controller, so older operating systems like Windows 2000 and XP don't need special disk controller drivers to recognise the hard drive. AHCI is just true SATA without the compatibility, so you do need special drivers, but you get all of the features that SATA offers, including the faster speeds and the ability to hot-swap drives. What kind of computer are you using this drive in? I seem to remember some limitation or another that prevents a lot of older computers from properly addressing drives over 2TB. For the life of me I can't remember any details on that. Edit: Derp. Jaclaz pretty much covered what I was trying to remember in his post.
  18. Thank you for looking into this, Bluebolt. The Windows 2000 installation that I noticed this issue on was one set up fairly recently. It has only the November 30th, 2014 release of Unofficial Update Rollup on it. No upgrades, no downgrades. I hadn't noticed anything like this before since I've had no reason to change the mouse pointer from the control panel on Windows 2000 with the unofficial updates before. The other user that has experienced the same (if not a very similar) issue originally used the February 5th, 2013 release of Unofficial Update Rollup, then upgraded to a more recent version later on. They said that with subsequent re-installs of Windows 2000 and newer releases of Unofficial Update Rollup on different hardware, they hadn't experienced the same problem.
  19. I have Java 7 Update 72 on my Windows 2000 install. Is that any good to you?
  20. I'm having an issue trying to change the mouse cursor scheme in Windows 2000 with the unofficial updates. When I open the mouse properties from the control panel, and then select the "Pointers" tab, the mouse settings window disappears, and any subsequent attempts to change the mouse cursor fail in the same way. I'm using the November 30th, 2014 release of Unofficial Update Rollup, plus USP 5.1 and Update Rollup 2. Another user of the unofficial updates has experienced the same if not a very similar issue, with an older version of UUR. EDIT: I tried exporting the registry values under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Cursors and adding them to the offending Windows 2000 install. After logging off and on again, the mouse cursor changed appropriately. What is strange is that when I navigate to the mouse properties and select the "Pointers" tab the mouse properties window no longer disappears!
  21. The system file for the "Welcome to Windows" screen is msgina.dll in the system32 directory.
  22. Anybody know how to change the appearance of the menus in Windows? I'm looking to change this: To this:
  23. I use Rufus. It's the most simple and reliable way of doing this that I've found. Another method I used about 4 years ago completely mangled setup and Windows XP didn't end up installing correctly. Installing XP using Rufus is pretty much the same as it is with the CD. Only problem is you can't install Windows 2000 or Windows XP 64bit with it.
  24. I've never had a problem installing the very newest versions of Unofficial Update Rollup without the older versions installed first, then again I've only been using the unofficial Windows 2000 updates for about a year. In other news, windows2000.tk seems to be unavailable at the moment.
