  1. Ordinarily I would agree with you, but it seems unlikely given the number of people who have responded saying they experience similar issues. Also I believe it has already been stated that the shares were working properly before the switch to Windows XP SP2. Not a permissions issue. See again above that the shares worked correctly before the switch to SP2. Also note that they can all be accessed if the complete network path is entered into the address bar. The issue is that the folders are not visible if you try to browse to them using Explorer, starting at the top-level folder and working your way down. nLite being the issue is unlikely. I don't use it, and I have had the same problem. Not me, sorry. Been a while since I worked with 2000 and it's service packs. Do the latest releases not have the same /integrate fix that the XP releases have?
  2. The CODEBOX tags are the ones you are looking for. [codebox ] [/codebox ]
  3. An interesting concept, and one I hadn't even considered. As I mentioned before, I was testing using my Media Folder, which contains quite a number of files (over 3000 mp3s alone; guess who owns way too many CDs...). Total files shared was still probably less than 5000, but I suppose it could still be the issue... Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  4. I used to have a problem almost, if not exactly like this when trying to help set up a VPN. At that time we just chalked it up to wonky VPN software, and implemented an FTP server solution that suited our needs just as well. Seems like there may be more to it after all. As I recall, in our particular situation, the (sub)folders were not showing up even though we were accessing them using the IP addresses. I don't believe whether we ever tested whether or not we could directly access the subfolders by typing the full path into the address bar. Just out of curiosity, have you noticed any common properties in the folders that aren't showing up correctly? I seem to recall that we were experimenting with the Media share off of my PC, and it can be rather obscenely large at times. I seem to recall that all of the smaller shares were being displayed correctly.
  5. As I mentioned before, all my hardware seems to be in fine working order after a uA installation that included the latest Driver Packs. Keep up the good work, Bâshrat. My hardware: Asus A7V333 Motherboard (VIA KT333 Chipset) (RAID not enabled)SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1Sapphire Radeon 9200D-Linnk DFE-530TX 10/100 PCI Ethernet AdapterYeah, yeah, I know. I can already hear the hardware entusiasts giggling. Now that I think about it, most of this stuff is probably so old that XP SP2 would support it out of the box. I'll be so glad when I finally get to upgrade again.
  6. Another successful Driver Pack installation. I'll post back with my system specs for you when I'm not falling asleep on my keyboard.
  7. Have you checked your hosts file to see if the entries you put there still exist? You said that putting them in there in the first place cleared up the error, and I've lately found, much to my annoyance, that something has been clearing out my custom hosts file with a blank one. Might want to check up on yours to see if that's what caused your error to show up again.
  8. First off, great guide, Totoymola. Now my silent Firefox and Thunderbird WinRAR SFX installers have icons that are much more fitting. One thing I notice when implementing this that you don't mention is that I had to rename the new SFX module to something that contained the word Default. For example, when I was building an SFX module for Firefox, the module worked fine when called Default1.SFX, but failed consistantly when renamed to Firefox.SFX. I was finally able to get around it by calling the finished module FirefoxDefault.SFX. The problem duplicated itself with the Thunderbird module, until I likewise renamed it to ThunderbirdDefault.SFX. Anyone else experience any issues similar to this?
  9. Ryan's update pack incorporates the latest Windows Update software, I believe, so there must be some way of doing it. Sorry I can't provide more specific instructions. Maybe if you ask nicely Ryan will be kind enough to share his secret.
  10. If I am reading this correctly, you are applying these tweaks twice; once at T-12 and then again at the end of the installation process. Try not installing them at the end of all your installations and see if you are still able to install the programs without a warning prompt. It looks to me that the tweaks are not being properly applied at T-12, and as such you get the warning when trying to run the installers unitl after the tweaks are applied again at the end of your post-install script.
  11. I use something like this myself to access my home PC and network as well. My free DDNS service is offered from another provider than the one The-VOICE listed, but I imagine the service would be quite comparable. So far as I can tell, there's no real reason to choose one over the other. Here are a few options for those who are interested: ZoneEdit The Public DNS Service Mydomain and MyDNS Domain Name Services Hammernode Static and Dynamic DNS PowerDNS Express EveryDNS DYNU Dynamic DNS Service CJB Dynamic DNS and Web Redirection Yi.org Dynamic DNS and Web Redirection DYNS Dynamic DNS Service DynDNS No-IP Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for your Dynamic IP DNS Made Easy I ripped this list from TheFreeCountry.com. Here's a direct link to that page: Click here. I myself use No-IP and I believe The-VOICE said he uses DynDNS. I guess we can consider both of those services to have received unoffical MSFN approval. The other services are likely just as effective, but I cannot vouch for any other than No-IP which I actually use.
  12. I'm going to assume here that the server IP is within the 10.0.0.2-10.0.0.50 range that you set up as trusted IP ranges. Does your uA script call the installers from their locations on the server or does it copy them to the local hard drive and run them from there? If you try to run the installs manually after Windows install, do they still give the warning message? Could you post a screenshot or the exact wording of the warning dialog?
  13. I find it interesting that not one person asked what kind of access you need to your files. If all you need is access to the files themselves, then perhaps the best solution would be to set up an FTP server. As far as sharing files across the internet, this has always been the best solution for me. Rather than opening up a potential access point for hackers with Remote Control or Remote Access software, an FTP server will allow you access only to the files you choose to allow access to. Windows XP Pro includes everything you would need to set up an FTP server on your home machine. I personally have a seperate box set up to handle it, but it is certainly not required. If remote access/control is what you are really looking for, I myself use RemotelyAnywhere. Can't say for sure how it compares to the products mentioned by others here because I have never used them. In my opinion, though, a lot of times it just comes down to a matter of personal preference. Just my two cents.

    ESS.BAT

Looks like someone else was having the exact same problem you are, phalinj. This quote is from a thread started just yesterday. Next time, please use the search function before started a new thread to address an issue that is already being discussed. See the other topic here.
  15. Nice, two threads on the first page dealing with the same issue. I'll post a link here to the other one for those who are interested. I'll also post a link to this one in the other one. Three cheers for the search function. See the other topic here.
  16. How long has this been going on? Has explorer.exe ever worked properly on this system, or has it been like this since you first installed Windows? Are you running System Restore on this system, and if so have you tried restoring the system to a time when Explorer was working properly. It sounds to me like some of the system files have been corrupted, and if a repair from CD wasn't successful and you have no restore point, you be out of luck and in need of a re-install.

    ESS.BAT

There are many programs available that monitor your Start Up folder and registry entries, but Windows also has a built-in one that you can use as well. Just open a Run prompt and type msconfig and hit enter. The Startup tab lists everything that is going to be run every time you boot the PC and log in, and includes a reference saying where it is being called from. It's not as pretty or as easy to read as many of the other applications out there, but it does have the advantage of being already installed if you don't have anything else. Keep us posted.
  18. I'm lazy. I use a barber with a set of hair clippers to style my hair. I just keep it short enough that between visits, no styling is required.
  19. What software are you installing? I'm assuming if you restore the system to factory state again the drive will re-appear again. If there is more than one application that you are installing, try uninstalling them one at a time until the drive reappears. If you uninstall them all and the drive still hasn't shown up, restore the system again and reinstall the applications one at a time. Wait a while between installing apps to see if you can isolate the one that is causing the problem. If you can, check the manufacturers site to see if they can offer any suggestions. It seems unlikely that your friend would be the first person in history to experience this issue, and it may be a common enough error that the application vendor has posted a solution or even a patch. Hope this helps.

    ESS.BAT

It means that some process or another in your Start Up is looking to run a batch script (.bat file) called ess.bat. To fix it, you need to find out where the file is being called from and either remove the reference or find a way to replace the file. A quick search on Google returned many foreign language form sites that may or may not have linked this particular file to a virus or trojan. Might want to consider updating the definitions of your antivirus and antispyware programs and running them to see if they detect anything.
  21. Is your PC playing any sound at all? If it is always running 100% silent, then you may have a problem with your sound card, sound driver or speakers. Alternately, you may have just muted the audio from the Windows Volume Control. Open the Run prompt (Start -> Run, or WinKey + R) and type sndvol32 and hit enter or click OK to check the WVC settings. The key sliders in this case would be Play Control and Wave/MP3. If you are getting sound from the machine on some occasions, it's likely that you have just turned the sound options for these things off. Check the settings on your system sounds by double clicking the Sounds and Audio Devices icon in Control Panel and clicking the Sounds tab in the dialog box that comes up. Scroll down the list in the Program Events box. The events you are looking for are Start Windows and Exit Windows. Sounds for MSN Messenger can be configured from this same dialog box. Scroll down the Program Events box until you find the section headed MSN Messenger. The 4 events that MSN Messenger can assign sounds to are listed here. (This is with MSN Messenger v6.2.0205, it may be different using other versions, such as the 7.0 beta, but I would be surprised if it changed very much.) Other things to check if you aren't getting any sound at all from your system include the cabling and power/volume settings on your speakers themselves. Try connecting the speakers to another system and see if they work there. Also try plugging in a seperate set of speakers to this system, or even a pair of headphones, to see if you can get sound that way. Hope this helps.
  22. Tested this again. Downloaded Ryan's latest update pack and redownloaded DPBASE v5.05.2. After manually integrating Ryan's pack and then slipstreaming all the driver packs via the same method as last time (method 2, GUIRunOnce, do not keep), the WINNT.SIF file matches the code you posted. Maybe something got corrupted in my last download. Yep. You're right. The BTS_DPs_finish.cmd script from the CD i tested with a day or two before you released the latest DPBASE called the final cleanup script using the %systemdrive variable. Looks like I was re-reporting a bug that had already been reported, and fixed. My appologies. On a side note, I would like to click some links for you since I can't afford to make a direct donation, but I can't find the ads on your site. I remember the Google ads from a few months ago, but haven't seen any in a while. Am I just blind? Not that I'm complaining about a lack of advertising, but I would like to support you for all the fine work you've put into these driver packs.
  23. Are all of the rest of your tweaks being applied properly? If not, that would probably be a good place to start troubleshooting. One thing I noticed in browsing your tweak file is that you appear to have set up almost 50 different trusted ranges that each consist of a single address. Why not set up a single trusted range that is 50 address long (ie: 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.50)? If nothing else, it would cut the size of your tweak file almost in half. Also, what is the address of the server you are trying to install from? Have you given it a static address, or is it assigned via DHCP? Edit: Where are you accessing the properties of the file from? Where is the file whose properties you are modifying stored? Where did it come from? It sounds to me like you are talking about modifying the properties of a file you've downloaded onto your local PC. That won't work in this case because he is trying to run files from a remote location and he would have to "unlock" them every time he re-installs the OS. As Ducky_ace indicated before, this completely overrides the purpose of creating unattended installs.
  24. I've noticed what I take to be an error when using method 2 to slipstream the driver packs. I am using the up-to-date version of all driver packs, including DP_Base 5.0.5.2, which I downloaded today. After running the included batch files on a uA CD so fresh that it did not even have a WINNT.SIF file yet, the slipstreaming process created an answer file for me. However, the answer file created was practically blank. The only thing it contained was the following: ;Generated by Bashrat the Sneaky's DriverPacks BASE I elected to use the GUIRunOnce method when prompted at the end of RunMe.cmd, and not to keep the driverpacks once the install is complete. One other thing I noticed is that BTS_DPs_cleanup.cmd is created in $OEM$\$1\D, which will result in it being copied to %systemdrive%\D; it is then called from BTS_DPs_finish.cmd as %systemdrive%\BTS_DPs_cleanup.cmd. This looks to be an issue that was supposedly addressed in the latest batch of fixes, which leads me to wonder if maybe there was a problem with the upload process and the "new" release is actually the same as the old one but with a new name.
  25. You should be able to set those settings in your answer file. If so, ref.chm should provide all the necessary details.
