  1. thats amazing, if true I was a bit skeptical as well. But I just tested it and it works. Never would have figured that one out on my own. Thanks for the tip, Thag. Welcome to MSFN.
  2. I've checked RyanVM's forum, and still can't find anything on this. I've tried searching both his forum and this one. I am having the same problem. Do you have a link to this info?
  3. Yep, after reading your post, I'd say it's a safe bet that I, at least, am much younger than you. I also had a very aggressive business in the early 80's. We called it grade school. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is still considered bad form to ask "When you die, can I have your brain?" right? Geez. At a bargain-basement price like that, even I can afford your fees!In all seriousness though, welcome to the community. I'm sure your wisdom and experience will be an asset to us all. And I for one am not (quite) too proud to admit that sometimes I can use all the help I can get. Edit: Oh, and I love that signature line!
  4. Post #3 Post #4 What did I miss; you said this was already resolved?
  5. Well, not exactly. You could design the answer file to eliminate the prompt to create additional users and still leave the installation itself an attended process. But the answer file is the only way that I know of to eliminate that prompt, yes.
  6. Your best bet is to move the file to the $OEM$\$$ folder. This will copy it to the root of the system drive automatically during installation. You can then launch the file by adding the following to your answer file (WINNT.SIF): [GuiRunOnce] "%systemdrive%\menu.htm" Hope this helps.
  7. I had the exact same annoyance with a game I play that comes on 3 CDs. I was able to just copy the contents of all 3 CDs to a single folder on my hard drive and then burn that folder as a DVD. No guarantee that will work for you, but it did for me. Of course, I can't play the game without the original game CD, but that is another issue entirely.
  8. I had the same problem on my PC before I wiped it and started from scratch...without installing Yahoo. How were you able to remove it? I never could, and I'm sure others out there also have the same problem and could benefit from your experience...
  9. This can be done quite easily using the unattended installation process. I'm not sure about manual installs. If nothing else, can always go back and delete the account that gets created once the installation is complete.
  10. Well, reposting a question that has already been answered is a poor place to start. As gamehead already explained, the stars are linked to the number of posts a member has contributed. As he also already pointed out, we do not encourage mindless posting for the sole purpose of raising one's post-count. (Hooray, one more post for me )
  11. By default, Windows Messenger, like Windows Media Player and IE, cannot be removed via Add/Remove Windows Components. The checkboxes for these applications only indicate whether or not the visible access points (read: shortcuts) are present. If you want to remove Windows Messenger you must first make it visible in Add/Remove Windows components. I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction to do that, if needed. I would, but it is very late (early) and I'm too tired to figure it out again right now. Hope this helps.
  12. There is only one difference between making a single-boot DVD versus making a single-boot CD: almost seven times more space.
  13. I've printed this one. It will become a famous quote. A famous quote when MSFN - in the future - will look back to its past, seeing how it has evolved. If I would change one word to that small speech... I'd ruin it! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Amen, Bâshrat. Someone get that silver-tongued devil a medal or something. Seriously though, I couldn't agree more. A friend of mine pointed me to MSFN's world-class unattended Windows CD guide page after we got into a discussion about uA CDs in general. The guide led me to the forum, and the forum got me hooked. I don't post or visit quite as often as I did when I first joined up, but I am still drawn back here time and again. Thanks and congratulations to all those who have helped strive to make MSFN such a great community; you've done an amazing job!
  14. Was the PC named correctly before you made the latest modification? My best guess is that you have mistyped the line for specifying the PC name in WINNT.SIF. Here is the correct syntax: [UserData] ProductKey=ThisI-sWher-eYour-KeyGo-esSir FullName="User Name" OrgName="Company Inc." ComputerName=ComputerName My understanding is that the quotes around Full and OrgName are only required when inputing values that have spaces, but I leave them in regardless, just for consistancy's sake. If your WINNT.SIF entries match these ones, then there must be something else that is causing your error. Please post the specifics of your uA CD and hopefully we can help you sort it out.
  15. If I am understand your intentions correctly, this is how I do it. Create the following two files in your $OEM$ folder: UserAccounts.cmd net user Username Password /add net localgroup Administrators Username /add net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited REGEDIT /S autologon.reg EXIT AutoLogin.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "DefaultUserName"="Username" "DefaultPassword"="Password" "AutoAdminLogon"="1" Replace Username and Password with the respective names for your PC, then add the following line to cmdlines.txt: "useraccounts.cmd" Hope this helps.
  16. See the wonderful MSFN uA Windows CD Guide for answers to this. Here's a link to the relevant page. Click me.
  17. No comment on the registry entry you mentioned, but I suspect the problem with the folder is linked back to the old 8.3 naming scheme used by DOS and some older applications. Under that naming scheme, C:\Program Files is renamed to C:\Progra~1. I've never been 100% sure of the way it works, but I suspect your new folder called Program would also be renamed, because of its similarity to the already truncated Program Files folder. I also suspect that it would be truncated to Progra~1, forcing the Progam Files folder to change its own truncated name to Progra~2. Any applications that referenced your Program Files folder by its truncated name would then be pointing to the wrong place. Let me know if that didn't make sense and I will try to clarify it.
  18. Hmm. I wonder if it is related to the version I am using. What version is everyone else using? I am using 3.41.
  19. I can confirm some of them, although one should keep in mind that I am far from a registry expert... Messenger Service is definitely disabled by default. Alerter I'm not sure about, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I agree on this one too. Prefetching every single program you ever run on your PC can cause the prefetch folder to become overly bloated. Definitely true. I am not familiar with the particular tweak he is referencing, but every ISP is different, so optimum tweaking for each user is going to be different. True again. If the Security Center service is disabled, there is no need to disable each individual prompt (Anti-Virus, Automatic Updates and Firewall) that the Security Center offers. I would recommend that these tweaks be left in place, however, as they are useful to users like me who only want to disable some features of the Security Center and not the whole thing in its entirety. This is true as well. If the tweaks are going to be labeled "Disable," it only makes sense to assign the correct values to disable those services. My own tweak file contains a listing of many different services, and notes right at the start of the section the different values that can be assigned to achieve the desired effect. Suppose it could be worth adding. It is true that Home Edition only supports Simple File Sharing. I'm not sure about this one. I'm not enitely sure what gets cleared by these tweaks. I know recent document history for Windows itself as well as for individual applications is stored in the registry, but I'm unsure just how clean any of these tweaks will scrub it. This tweak is mis-labeled. The binary value contained in that tweak is designed to make your Taskbar look exactly like the one from which that value was taken. This includes such things as which Toolbars are visible, what size they should be, what order the icons should be in, etc... The best way to use this tweak is to configure your Taskbar exactly the way you like it, and then export that value from your own registry for use in your tweak file. For links to several threads on this topic, see my previous post in this thread here.
  20. Was it the host PC or the remote PC that you re-installed KB88590 on? You don't specify and it is the host PC specifially that I am interested in since I believe someone has already mentioned that reinstalling the fix on the remote PC caused the files to disappear again. Well, unless someone has come up with a better response... You would have to check with Ryan on this. However, my best guess is that you can't. My understanding of Ryan's update packs is that they don't install the hotfixes. Rather, the fixes are actually integrated into the source files on the CD. This, I believe, would make uninstalling them impossible. Do a check in your Add/Remove Programs with the checkbox for Show Updates checked. Any updates installed via Ryan's pack will not be listed. Any that have been installed since the OS was installed with Ryan's pack will be. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
  21. Well, it seems at long last we have found a solution to this problem. I will have to file this away somewhere so that if and when the problem crops up for me again, I will be able to solve it. Let me reiterate durex's thanks to all who contributed on this. And a big thanks to durex himself for finally getting frustrated enough to start it. Just to confirm, KB885250 installed on the client PC (the one from which the shares are being accessed) seems to be the cause of the missing or invisible files. Has anyone tested whether (re)installing KB885250 on the host PC makes any difference? Just want to make sure all possible scenarios have been covered. Cheers. I have a sneaking suspicion that this mad be an unfortunate side-effect of removing KB885250 from the client PC. Is anyone else experiencing similar difficulty? "Repercussions," just for the record.
  22. Might have been a good idea to post a link or a brief description. I had to read back to find out what your solution was. I'm not experiencing this trouble myself, so unfortunately I can't confirm or deny. Here's the post, for those who are able to confirm/deny:

  24. That was the impression I got too, since I seem to recall someone saying that the files showed up properly from one of the machines that they had set up on their network. I could be mistaken though, and I've already sifted through this entire thread several times so I don't feel like doing it again. Please do. I am really curious to know if that is an actual solution or just a coincidence. Help you? Man, I just do it for the post count.
