  1. Thanks for sharing. I too was faced with many articles describing a fix by removal of folder templates, but that was neither the case of solution for myself either. This has seemed to solve the mystery for me. I'll keep a close eye over it. Been battling it back and fourth the past year or so, puzzled. Strangely enough install/uninstallation of my Radeon display drivers seemed to have triggered it, or at least altered it in some way. Then I had my primary user account free of said bug after a driver reinstallation, while another standard user setup for a family member suffered from it's affects. It's confusing to the point where describing it can be even more so confusing.. None the less, great finding. Sorry to say I'm happy this horrid issue has finally reared it's head on you, simply because you seem to have great luck fixing up this product Cheers
  2. Not really , if you play games, the right way is update to windows 8.1/10,some games start putting windows 7 as minimum os supported (AC Rogue doesnt lauch and Advanced Warfare inicially works on vista, but after a patch, they decline vista support) For working/editing, new drivers isnt increase a lot the performance, against update your OS (without mention dx12 are coming next year). Windows 8 1 works a way better , 10 in couple months too Catalyst 15,4 Drivers are fine for the most recent games (im playing gta 5 really smooth with those drivers, the crew and bf4 /hardline same) Im only waiting for a decent windows vista theme for windows 10 and the first redistributable patch, to upgrade , solid colors looks terrible in my opinion. If you're that keen on only having Vista's UI, you could easily make 7 a near clone to Vista. As obviously easy as that is to do, those of us that remain with this OS must retain some reason, you would assume. I find it's searching options far more intuitive, especially in the light of 7's weird search related glitches and watered down UI. DWM performance is noticeably degraded in 7, but is fixed in 8.1 by quite a lot. Vista better handles non composition/Aero applications though, useful in my case since I do spend much of my time in Fireworks 8 (not fan of modern adobe suite). I also get much better performance with DX 9 games, which is what I primarily play. It is aggravating to see the mild compatibility restrictions though, especially considering neither 7 or Vista are mainstream anymore, and both share DirectX 11. Theming on Vista is much better than in more recent versions of Windows. Shellstyle panes, orbs, etc are all apart of theme. Easier to work with, in my opinion better options to choose from. As far as Windows 10 is concerned, visual styling is the least of it's concern. The privacy issues and telementary are a massive set back. The way it update sis also very invasive. I hear the Enterprise edition will be free of such regression, however. UI is still the same, of course. Not sure about the pricing and licensing either. Interface of 10 is vastly different than Vista, 7, even 8. Lot of Metro splashed in, almost content UI. You can theme around most of it, but you'll still hit many "Metro" bumps. 8 alone already takes some 3rd party software to bring fourth sanity to it's GUI. This is a pretty decent Vista VS for 10 though, if you're interested: http://sagorpirbd.deviantart.com/art/Vista-Themes-Final-for-Windows-10-521781687Also some of the work 2008WV and I have done to make 7 more like Vista: http://2008windowsvista.deviantart.com/art/Windows-Vista7-Updates-559623294 Back on the topic of AMD/Nvidia. Yes, Nvidia is better for Vista by a country mile. I still battle some of the Explorer related glitches using the drivers. Heck, it's better for even 7 if your sole purpose isn't just to game. It's a bang for buck kind of product to game on more recent OSes, and that's really it. We have folks still using Windows 2000 on these forums, and AMD is already a headache just for Vista. Let alone 2 years prior to EOL.. Of course, use whatever serves your purpose. We all have different opinions. Why MSFN is such a great community
  3. Yes, Sumatra is really nice. UI is very Vista fitting too with color scheme and such. But it's not an actual PDF editor, but neither is Reader for that matter. Not the free version anyway. Though it can perform signatures. For professional purposes, have been a little reliant on working with a lot of PDF formats.
  4. It would indeed be very interesting to see it work in Vista. But yeah, Adobe products in general are quite bloated now. Reader is of no exception, and I personally am not a fan. Nitro PDF and Foxit are pretty nice alternatives. UI is a lot like Office 2010 too.
  5. Ah that's too bad. Well it's great we at least have what we have. 13.12 was beyond words just a nightmare. Any GPU's needing higher than 14.12 to work? Personally headed Nvidia's way in a few months here, other reasons.
  6. Again, drivers for Server 2008 and Vista are the same. Applies to R2 and Windows 7 as well. If you can't find any drivers newer than XP, it could simply be a result of an aged GPU that was released pre-Vista era. If that is the case, try an XP driver. More than likely it will work, but don't expect to be able to use Aero or certain 3d related DWM functions.
  7. Server 2008 is based on Vista, R2 being 7. Just beware of those very key variations. There's a converter tool for either to get client stuff going. So you're cool there. With that in mind, yes 2008 R1 is supported 3 more years than Vista. But do not expect servers to be treated any different than their client counterparts when it comes to general software and drivers. Sometimes you'll get to stuff locking out installation on servers. Once EOL hits, the server will feel that very same raft. Luckily for us though, 7 and Vista are very much so alike. For example, I'm using an unsupported AMD video driver under Vista as we speak. So OS is fairly future proof, with certain regressions aside. Open source developers treat OS fairly well too. Also, being an ex user of 2008. I can tell you straight up it simply is Vista, just with server tools and related functions. They even share the same update model and Service Packs, maybe some small things vary. So as far as security patches go. You can be confident we have a fallback means of updates to get going on Vista for quite a long time If not... Oh well. Common Sense Internet Security 2020. (I've noticed things sometimes break with client related features being brought over to WinServer. I'd seriously just use Vista, but feel more than free to give it a dive.)
  8. I just did a check of the url, it is still up. Perhaps you have security software blacklisting Mediafire, maybe even ISP cap? Beware of ads on page though. I use uBlock and Noscript.
  9. Its weird, i installed 15.4 with the patch (i downloaded gta 5 and catalyst 14.9 isnt optimized for this game) as you can see at the right, i can play inkball without problems, the only error i got its the user32.dll running the crew and CCC, but its fine,if i disable CCC for startup the message error never appears again. I tried this patch to make install 15.7,but doesnt works, appareantly, the driver installs fine, but shows two pop ups errors, and aero cannot be enable again and ccc dont startup to check the version of the drivers,so its usseless right now. For me its ok,i dont play games wich requieres 15.7 to ran fine (i only play Counter GO, GTA 5, Hardline and sometimes CoD Black Ops 2) i hope we can find the new fix, for those people want be ussing vista until be impossible install the newest drivers. I myself never experience any such issue with InkBall either, nor any game/application for that matter. Only regression is the error at login, which can be worked around by disabling the CCC at startup. Getting less framedrops here than I did in 7 playing Gutterball Golden Pin, so I'm pretty satisfied. The fact that 15.7 fails for you is concerning though. We're in the wind with drivers now, so unofficial workarounds are vital to the survival of this OS. Still, don't have to driver hop every Tuesday anyway. 14.12 is very stable for me, and I have no reason to replace it yet. Just want to know that I, "could". I heard rumors about Nvidia too, though people are modding their drivers all the time anyway. Yes, hopefully a fix shall suffice eventually. I have no intentions of leaving my preferred software, especially not to head back to 7 in chains.
  10. If you installed BWC’s kernel on top of the extended kernel already included in UUR, that has been known to cause problems. In that case. What is the best installation method for Win2k/kernel?
  11. I do remember AnX using XP drivers with avail on one of his older Haswell machine's. Are you positive there is no XP driver available for your hardware? If so, it would probably behave, aside lack of DWM. Chipsets are a different story, but worry about those later. Personally, I would have looked into a Sandy Bridge era i7 lap. Great machines, priced well, and Vista support Hope you can find some fix though. Intel HD is really our only back end splinter right now. Even the Omega drivers are tame for me right now with an R7.
  12. Interesting. Never thought to redirect the favorites link. That worked well, aside only being able to display itself as a menu and not a clickable link. My Start Menu looks much cleaner now none the less. Forgive my 10 month late thank you
  13. That's actually quite nice looking Borders remind me of the basic theming from some of the later Longhorn builds, start has a Windows 7 6801 form. You should try and get the 7 Beta Shellstyle cpl panel styling too. Though I personally like Vista's darker/green aesthetic. I have to agree with vinifera there ^ NT 6 sourced doesn't do so well without DWM turned on. I saw a mod on Deviantart once, it was the Classic UI, but themed under DWM. Maybe there's a basic concept too? (Nice to see Pale Moon in use btw)
  14. What features were missing on Windows Server 2008 that Vista had? (I'm also wondering if Server 2008 updates will be portable to Vista, but there's no news on that front. Very little. Server 2008 essentially IS Vista, merely for servers. Same Service Pack model, identical updates, same shell. Just not really worth hopping off a client OS in it's favor, imo. Sometimes drivers and security software will lock you out too. It's almost certain it's updates will make it to Vista, however. Vista and 08 are probably closer to each other than XP and POS 2009. So not really worried there. 3rd party support is the deal now. Modern Vegas/Adobe stuff doesn't like it, nor does Intel HD. But with AMD and Nvidia, it's simple to get going. Light mods away at best. Common software is fine too. Yes, I agree with @dencorso. Not many of us left, but the few users are diehards to the OS. Too close to 7 anyway to die that easily. I'm confident Server 2008 updates will make it just fine. Used the OS as main before, it's identical in just about every way possible. Here's what I did to it at one time (Deviantart link): http://fav.me/d7rkjla
  15. I've been using 7 x64 the past month or so, want to make a return back to Vista. Thing is, the Catalyst drivers would always seem to cripple Windows Explorer. Last version I used was 13.12. My view and sorting settings would change at random, as would the templates themselves. OS was almost unusable. Damage would set in within a week. Happens on every single AMD/ATI device I have in the house, I don't understand it. Last time Vista worked properly was on an old Compaq 6005 Pro, some cheap onboard video. Driver was pre 13.12. Last I remember it behaving. I've never witnessed the anomaly on anything else before. I VM Vista quite a bit to test stuff too. I also know people just fine using GTX 760's. I'm going to be testing this Omega wrapper on my other hard drive. Really hoping to find a solution to this, bizarre, and near undocumented issue. Hate having to abandon my OS and working software over such a thing. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated. Using an XFX R7 240. Prior to that was a 6670. Bug persisted either way. Update 7-28-15: Over a week now on your 14.12 wrapper, and all is working great. Better full screen scaling in games, smoother Dreamscene, and best of all no breakage. Catalyst Control did not work at 1st, but eventually opens now after updates. I only have the one error at initial login. Thus far no further issues. Really appreciate the efforts
  16. Does this tool put a block on the updates from being acquired? Or is it only an aid to systems infected? My last update run was about a week ago. Thus far I haven't encounted it, but I'd rather not wait for it either. Hoping to find a solution before something bad happens 1st -Thanks
  17. I say the fewer plugins, the better. It's hit or miss to actually be provided an option though, especially DRM protected content. Different services have different ways of providing the HTML video too, take Google depending on MSE to be in the browser for certain features. So Flash is very tightly wrapped around online streaming, none the less. But in the best case scenario, I do favor HTML5. YT's player has been quite unstable for me for the longest time. Anybody miss 2009 ?
  18. Folder templates themselves do in fact change if in this scenario. So no reg patch is capable of working around the damage. Those workarounds are intended to ditch the templates and use the all items view everywhere. I fail to understand what is causing it to happen. I know many who use Vista just fine, then once in a while this crap. All my machines subjected use Radeon cards, but so do many others without a hitch. I'm using 7 as of now. It is somewhat "fixed" in the light of these issues, yet broken in others as mentioned above. Still quite like it though. Have it configured to resemble Build 6801 theming/boot skin wise.
  19. That is the one issue that plagued me in Vista. Business, Ultimate, and even Server 2008. It was not the folder type feature either. Sort heading columns altered itself, grouping settings would out of the blue sort itself, icons looked different, opposite folders shared settings etc. I could find Registry patches to disable auto folder type, however my problem was views and settings simply changing for no reason. Kind of drives me mad how I can find no documentation on this. Could even be triggered by a driver. Just not enough people using the OS these days to find out.
  20. 1. File Manager - Clunky how? It had sort heading, a file tree that could partition side by side with favorite links, and completely unlocked to arrange item positions. On the flip, Windows 7 removes sort heading menu outside of details view, resulting in more clicks. The file tree is screwy, if you show all folders your pinned locations will easily get covered up. Libraries are pushed out on you in the Start Menu, and partially in Explorer. No option to byass. Typically harmless, but aggrevating somestimes with single accounts. 2. Lol.. 3. Superfetch - I do agree somewhat. Vista's Superfetching was quite monstrous. It was designed that way though, idea is to take strain off the hard drive. I see little to no difference either way. With an SSD, or even a high performance HDD, it's useless none the less. As far as UAC goes, it can be tweaked in Vista via Group Policy. But imrpoved greatly in 7, so yeah. I love them both, and I can easily customize them both on the outside, and some through Reg settings. But I fail to understand how some of these flaky sides to 7 are so vastly overlooked in the light of hating Vista. Composing this from Windows 7 Home Premium x64
  21. Me and anx here are trying to get tp link tl wn722n drivers going on Windows 2000. However installation fails. Has anybody managed to successfully register this device on Win2k? Thanks
  22. Opinions are subjective. We all know very well people here choose to remain on XP, even as far as 2k in many cases. I think you guys are awesome keeping those products alive Personally, I love Vista (SP2 or Server 2008 SP2). But I can understand why some detest it. It's not near as low latency on hard disk, it hates life below 4 GB of RAM, and customization is as good as gone. But what I fail to understand is, why do so many love XP, hate Vista, and then hop on the 7 wagon? I mean 7 did have a less rocky release. You can run 7 without any SP's and it's usable. But look at the whole shell of the OS. Heck, you can't even bypass Auto Arrange within Explorer without a patch to the registry. The Classic Control Panel is gone, substituted with a less user customization icon "Views". Libraries are a semi-cool idea, but their a nuisance on only 1 User Account. Even more so aggravating how the Start Menu forces all media links to them. The old school applications are gone from 7 and onward. Paint being my biggest regression. I like the idea of features expanding, perhaps a new UI. But it's really difficult for simple pixel art. Grab a line, click out, grab a line, click out. WTH is all that about? The desktop fails to refresh where needed on some occasion. Normally, when there is a lot of desktop items in view. I'll move stuff into other directories, and I have to manually refresh for it to catch up. Similar fashion working with Account settings. On Vista, I can change my account name, restart Explorer, and it will see such changes instantly. 7 needs to be entirely logged out for the OS to catch up with new adjustments. DWM is also less responsive. Perhaps different for others. In my case, animations are rougher than Vista's. I also notice higher CPU. Not the case in Server 2008 R2 though, even with DWM and Aero. Really polished as a whole too. Search is also an annoyance. Especially for me, I manage a lot of data across multiple drives. Advanced Search within Vista was downright amazing. To the point UI, easily fine tuned. 7 just about thrashed it, to the point where XP is on top. I run Server 2008 SP2 (Vista converted) and it runs amazing. I just see no "improvement" in 7. Just weird changes, and messed up search.
  23. Alright. So correct me if I'm misinterpreting this here. - I use Windows 7 to format the drive partition for SSD due to XP's lack in proper alignment for drive type. - Use optimization software that normally is made for device, grab 3rd party alternative if needed. Manually issue TRIM every so often. I'd say once per week? - Disable said services, occasionally let OS sit in login terminal signed off. As with manual TRIM issue. Now I'm still skeptical tbh, can't afford to frack up an SSD. Besides lack in proper partition algorithm and TRIM (services aside). Is there anything I should be advised about with XP? Also since this is my 1st SSD. Is it relatively safe to partition them? And what is a good utility to use? Ideal here is to have Vista SP2 and XP Pro playing nice with each other, which also means making the bootloader get along.
  24. Hi all, I'm getting a new SSD soon and I intend to install Vista SP2 on it. Despite lack of official TRIM, I know various other people that have been going a long stretch with theirs on such setup using manual software that is made for the device to issue TRIM command. As an experiment, I'd like to test Windows XP Professional x86. I have a good PAE patch that allows up to 64 gigs of memory, DX 10 mod, and an unofficial iso with a few desktop tweaks. (XP Ultimate By Johnny) I do not want to jeopardize the health of this SSD at any cost, so I need some advice from those with experience on the matter. Aside TRIM. Is there anything within the filesystem of XP that can negatively impact a modern solid state hard drive? If this can be done, what must one do? I have a 2 TB Seagate data spinner here, so I can easily put another OS on this. But the idea of a light weight NT 5 based system on an SSD does sort of infatuate me to try. ~Would appreciate any insight. Thanks
  25.    On 3.6.28, I can still change player type here: https://www.youtube.com/html5 Videos play fine, but commenting, video manager page, and notifications are messed up. I use YT in Iron/Chrome, but it would be pretty nice to have access to it here in 3.6. Any workarounds? Aside YouTube, most other sites are fine for me.
