I'm not seeing Settings App crashes here, for what it's worth. Describe what you mean by "I've tried the sfc /scannow command and it hasn't worked". It reported a problem but failed to correct it? Or it says everything's fine but the settings app still crashes? If the former, you could try: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Hh824869.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 Specifically, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth -Noel

There isn't a way to get rid of the DWM debug window right now even WITH donating. The product simply isn't released. You're trying out a test version, still in development. It gets to be difficult to find information when the thread gets long. People, please read: BigMuscle's description of this version -Noel

Sorry I missed that. Hectic day. -Noel

The world really needed an OS that's not stable and continuously changing. -Noel
-
That's good. Something in a list I ran much like yours did break it - twice - and I've just not had the time to figure out exactly what did it. -Noel
-
Try dragging and dropping something in the Navigation (left) pane. If that works I'll be interested. All tweaks discovered so far break drag and drop. -Noel
-
To block extraneous / privacy intruding stuff from loading with web pages, look into using the MVPS hosts file. -Noel
-
I'm not sure exactly which ones. I do know that I can eliminate all the extraneous stuff from the Navigation pane on the left (except Quick Access) without perturbing SFC. -Noel

Pretty much everyone here's testing 10240, which by most accounts is the official release. It was available to insiders before the 29th. That being said, Aero Glass isn't released for 10240. What people are showing above is a test version, meant for stability testing. It's not turnkey, and it's not documented yet. -Noel

Watch out for breaking SFC system integrity. I've found that removing some of the keys leads to SFC reporting problems, and SFC /SCANNOW putting them back. -Noel
-
You're talking about in the Files pane? Yeah, all the "Folders" are still there for me. Normally I don't use that area much, save for checking whether any disks are near full. -Noel
-
It'll probably come back on its own with an upcoming Windows Update. Another couple of things you could try are SFC /SCANNOW or this: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Hh824869.aspx -Noel

Not now, maybe later. It is not a priority, because frame size can be influenced by altas+layout which I will describe on final release. Not sure what you mean by layout, but I'm sure you have something good in mind. I look forward to hearing your recommendations on that. For what it's worth, I've tried expanding the Drop Shadow resources to include more margin... That does work, BUT... Unfortunately it brings a downside: It changes the edge from a crisp appearance to a fuzzy one, detracting from the overall clean look. -Noel
-
Hey Big Muscle, are you thinking of bringing back support for FrameMargin settings? Just curious. -Noel
-
I look forward to reading your findings on that score, Tripredacus. All the nuggets of information about just how to "get there from here" that we have learned with past OSs may have become stale. Or maybe not. We can only know by testing things. -Noel

Then it becomes our job to spread the word. Educated users are our biggest allies, and Microsoft's biggest delay in achieving world domination. -Noel

Try pinging both. Requests rerouted to 0.0.0.0 fail at a more basic level. Failure / abort is the goal. -Noel
-
Nice! Suggest using 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1 on each entry in the hosts file you want to abort. I wonder what some of those settings will do in terms of allowing Insiders to remain active... -Noel

Since stripes are divided between even/odd blocks, the I/Os are divided more or less evenly between disks. Thus RAID 0 doubles I/O speed (if you only have 2 drives, otherwise it's more), but if you're using HDDs (bad idea, but some people still have older hardware) instead of SSDs then any given RAID 0 access will be delayed to the slowest seek time of the member drives involved. So depending on the hardware "double the speed" is an oversimplification. SSDs are so much more reliable than HDDs that doubling the chance for failure (or more, depending on the number of drives) isn't really asking for trouble. I use 2 million hour MTBF SSDs myself. Sorry, I sometimes assume people all use SSDs now. It's the only civilized way to compute. -Noel

SearchUI.exe is still there, so I misspoke a bit. But I don't use Windows Search anywhere I can see. I use Classic Shell. I did manage to disable SearchUI.exe from starting, but just changing the permissions on SearchUI.exe to do that actually broke System Protection (i.e., SFC failed). So I repaired it and SearchUI.exe is now back. Until such time as I figure out how to really zap her. I hate this new We Have Control, Do Not Attempt To Adjust Your Set approach by Microsoft. -Noel

Indeed. There are things I haven't been able to permanently rid myself of - yet. For example there are a number of Modern-oriented processes running all the time I don't need nor want running. On the other hand, if you eschew Microsoft's stupid Cortana / Windows Search you can get rid of indexing and things quiet down. Out of curiosity, how many processes do you have running on a quiet system with no applications? I'm in the mid 40s at the moment. -Noel

If it's anything like installing the Tech Previews, you'll have a LARGE download, then a LONG installation experience. Relaxen und watchen das blinkenlights (it actually says something along those lines, though not in broken English). Then you will find it will reset all your settings to what Microsoft wants. Get used to that. P.S., consider switching to RAID 0 to double your performance. -Noel

Now imagine Microsoft was just trying to throw a monkey-wrench in Google's business works while at the same time they themselves were trying catch up and outdo Google at the same game. Kind of sickening to think that's the level of twisted manipulation we can expect in the "big corporations getting in our lives" game, isn't it? It's equally disappointing to think that a grand majority of the public can't even begin to understand what we're talking about here. How many apologists have you heard say, "they would never do that." -Noel
-
Glad you got it. I wasn't speaking to you, specifically. Mostly I think people are expecting a final version, because of their incredible desire for Aero Glass, and Big Muscle's product is just not quite there yet. -Noel
-
Just for the record, that's not the theme atlas file I published you're showing. That looks like Big Muscle's file. But good on you for getting a combo working. I know many people crave Aero Glass very much, but it seems to me that most folks should wait until Big Muscle publishes a final version. The current version is clearly described as being for testing only. -Noel
