I believe 98se is identified as WinME v4.90.3001 A because of some WinME files installed from the 98SE2ME pack (such as kernel32.dll and sysdm.cpl).Actually I have hexed sysdm.cpl to display "Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) 4.10.2222 A"... Sysdm.cpl installs only as part of 98SE2ME options 1 + 2.More details in READ1ST.TXT under the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section [scroll down to "* Option 2:"]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT If you installed only option 3, you won't have the modded sysdm.cpl 4.90.3001 in %windir%\system , and it will probably show Windows ME... etc... , depending on other files you may have installed [?]. Please notice that... ... quoted from READ1ST.TXT, the "FAQ" section.I hope this answers your questions. PS: Sorry about your HD crash. Esti binevenit. Si multumesc pentru aprecierea ta. You're right.SCHANNEL.DLL is ver 5.131.2133.2 on WinME. I took schannel.dll from WinME CD, renamed it to 128sc.dll and added it to cryptme.exe for completeness. * Unofficial Windows ME CRYPT32.DLL 5.131.2133.6, CRYPTDLG.DLL 5.00.1558.6072, CRYPTUI.DLL 5.131.2133.2, ENHSIG.DLL 5.00.1877.8, MSASN1.DLL 5.00.2195.6905, MSCAT32.DLL 5.131.2133.2, MSSIP32.DLL 5.131.2133.2, RSAENH.DLL 5.00.2133.2, SCHANNEL.DLL 5.131.2133.2, SOFTPUB.DLL 5.131.2133.2, WINTRUST.DLL 5.131.2133.2 + XENROLL.DLL 5.131.3659.0 128-bit SSL Encryption Security Vulnerability Fixes: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms04-011.mspx Direct download [721 KB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/CRYPTME.EXE I discovered another "glitch" in cryptme.exe: forgot to add nircmd.exe + start.exe to the SED file, therefore to cryptme.exe. ;-( Corrected. ;-) Please try cryptme.exe again to see if it works ok. WinME SP canNOT interfere with/damage/etc 98SE SP, 98SE2ME or RP, because these 3 are designed to install only on Win98SE, not on WinME.But [as you may have noticed] WinME SP installs only on WinME. HTH P.S.: Mult noroc

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
These are the answers from the author of the GDI*.* patch: No, the newly discovered WMF bug is not taken care of by the GDI patch(es) I wrote. It is a totally different WMF record that, when malformed, could allow remote code execution. I am afraid KB918547.EXE & Q918547.DLL will have to be installed to be protected. Apparently it is a privately disclosed vulnerability, so there is no proof-of-concept file available to use for patch development and testing. It is worse than that, I am afraid. KB918547.EXE has at least one bug. It is identical to one of the bugs I fixed in KB891711.EXE. I have a patch already, but it will take a while until I can release it. I am way too busy at the moment to test it under Win98SE. It is not a bug that can cause the kind of system stability issues as we have seen with KB891711.EXE, so I think it is much less urgent. When patching KB918547.EXE I also noticed code that really puzzled me. I do not yet know what to make of it. -
Have you contacted the QDMA author? Name: Jack Ellis Email Johnson Lam here: http://johnson.tmfc.net/e_email.html He is in contact with Jack Ellis, and can forward your email to Jack or may give you Jack's email. Jack currently maintains + updates QDMA.SYS, QCDROM.SYS + QHIMEM.SYS. Johnson Lam posts these updates on his web site: http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/ HTH

That can't be right! I don't think that's even possible under Windows 98! First off, because FAT and FAT32 require the boot HDD to be drive C, AFAIK! With NTFS, it can be as high as F. Windows 98 don't support NTFS, because it isn't NT-based! He probably meant that Win98 SE [%windir% in his case] is installed on F:\WINDOWS , I don't think he meant F is his actual boot drive/partition, which as you pointed out, must be C [in normal conditions, without using any "fancy" boot/MBR "loaders"] on all FAT16/FAT32 drives/partitions.HTH

No download available [yet] for WinMSI...https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...group_id=124109 BTW: WinMSI will require 2000/XP/2003.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I went to WU + WUC right after I installed Q916281 on Win98 SE + IE 6.0 SP1, and both sites worked ok.And nobody reported any bugs accessing OU so far [i don't have any M$ Office components installed, so I can't check the OU site]. Please send me the corrected 98SE INF when u have time. IMHO: I believe the GDI*.* fix [unofficial Q912919] for both 98SE + ME takes care of the newly discovered WMF bug [MS06-026 a.k.a. Q918547], but I'm not sure. I'll wait for the GDI patch author to tell me if that's true, and will let you guys know. If that's true, then nobody needs to install Q918547, so we don't have to install 2 new CPU-cycles-eating-TSRs. What the hell kind of patch was that?! Again... similar to official Q891711, which was flawed, so somebody had to make U891711 to fix the M$ original patch (which was later reposted as V2.0) ?! So we keep putting up with screw-up after screw-up, if u ask me... But at least all our Win98/ME patch worries will be over July 11 2006. HTH -

IMHO:All these tools work perfect on my Intel 440BX mobo + Pentium III CPU system. My config.sys lines for UMBPCI.SYS use: I can't use UDMA/QDMA/XDMA tools because my HDs are hooked up to a RAID controller. But if I connect my HDs to the built-in mobo EIDE controller [with UDMA/UATA support], UDMA tools seem to work ok. I also know people with other chipsets/CPUs that use those tools every day without problems. I also use QCDROM every day in my config.sys, for native DOS CD/DVD support [MS-DOS 7.10, outside Win98 SE]. Works ok also with MS-DOS 8.0 [a.k.a. WinME]. I found out QCDROM.SYS to be the best CD/DVD device driver TSR [faster, takes less RAM], better than VIDE-CDD.SYS, which used to be my old favorite: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#CDROM4 Certain mobo/BIOS chipsets may or may not work because of hardware (in)compatibilites. Please notice also that these free tools are developed + maintained by programmers in their own time, with their own limited resources, and sometimes they don't have enough time for debugging or don't have enough hardware resources/documentation to test their tools with. But that doesn't mean we should all stay away from them. They work as expected on a lot of hardware out there. BTW: Have you contacted Uwe Sieber about UMBPCI.SYS? This is his web site: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/umbpci_e.html and email: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/email.html Complete UMBPCI.SYS guide at my site: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm Please see the "RESTRICTIONS" section: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#RES and the "KNOWN CHIPSET PROBLEMS" section: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#CHI and also the "EXTRA TOOLS" section: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#TOO for details about various mobo chipsets + how to make it work with different chipsets [workarounds]. The "USAGE GUIDELINES" section may provide some tips for debugging your system when using UMBPCI: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#QUI Current QCDROM release: http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/qcdrom.html XCDROM has been discontinued, but may work better on some systems: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR Current QDMA release: http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/qdma.html XDMA + UDMA(2) have been discontinued, but may work better on some systems: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRV HTH FYI: I may be biased because the developers of UMBPCI + QDMA/XDMA/QCDROM/XCDROM are buddies of mine.

All June 2006 Security Vulnerability Fixes now posted at WU + WUC. New URLMON.DLL works properly with WU/WUC/OU, no need for URLMONFX anymore. Bad news, the GRE WMF fix is made of 2 TSRs, similar to Q891711, actual GDI32.DLL/GDI.EXE *not* patched. -

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I don't think they lost any code, they're just too lazy to make patches for 9x OSes. They probably fired/layed off/reprofiled/etc all 9x OS developers/maintainers/support staff, they only need NTx people now. Why would they keep them, they don't make any money from 9x OSes. And they can't wait for July 11 to arrive, so they can ditch 98/ME support altogether. Just checked WU + WUC... no 98/ME updates posted yet. I'll try again tomorrow [thanks erpdude8]. Petr: MS posted these fixes: - Slovenian: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=sl - Slovakian: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=sk - Thai: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=th for the MS06-026 GRE WMF issue: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-026.mspx instead of patching gdi32.dll/gdi.exe [?]. These 2 files [Q918547.DLL + KB918547.EXE] are identical with the ones from the English fix because internal language properties box displays English. The catch is that these 2 files are only residents [TSRs], just like Q891711. -
Looks from the error dialogs you got, that Macromedia Dreamweaver 2006 8.0.2 requires MSI 3.0 or 3.1, which can be installed and used only on 2000/XP/2003: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#MSI I don't think KUP can help in this case. But u can try 1 of these [free(ware)] tools: - msix: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2006/04/07/571138.aspx - lessmsi: http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive...1/16/14995.aspx to extract files from MSI installers, and then try to install DW 2006 by regsvr32 DLLs +/- OCXs. Might be a long shot, but it's worth the time if it works. And this might apply to other apps/games that otherwise cannot install on 9x/ME. And in certain cases might need [or not, depending on particular app/game] to install KUP. HTH
