i finaly have a 64 bit processor but i took 98 off completely and gone to xp.i was afraid 98 would not work on it sides before the end it gave me some troubles that i didn't wanna bother fixing.

i have a amd athlon 64 3000+ with hyper transport technology and it reports it as one,strange as yours is seen as 2,do you have 2 cpus in that mobo or one?if one then maybe update the bios or cpu driver then it may fix it.

the sp will not work on 98 fe but on 98 se,if your using 98 fe why r u using that buggy version of 98?time to switch to 98 se or even w2k or xp.

if i were you i would avoid deleting stuff from thag folder as it may be needed later on.

goto windows/inf(it's a hidden folder) there is a file there called sysoc.ini, open it and where it says hide remove that word from wherever it says then goto control panel/add remove/windows comonents and you can remove MSN Explorer

The games - all of the them that come with Windows and you can remove some more or if you want use xplite to remove tons of crap but that costs money(hehe)

are you current with security updates n such?did you try a firewall?that will help if some1 is trying something on you.

it's actualy best to leave the pagefile on the same drive as xp so it can access it faster cuzz on another drive xp has to look elsewhere instead of where it is by default but make it the same size and there you go.

the reason you can't boot into xp is that the MBR entry for xp is gone and it only has the 98 MBR which does not support ntfs partitions like xp so you will need to do an xp repair and it will replace 98's boot record with xp's MBR and add 98 back and allow to boot from both again,if you don't want to do it then use system commander and it will allow you to boot to both again.

i had this exact same problem, it would log me in then log me out and freeze
what i would do is do an xp repair but for me i was still using xp sp1 and it never did it and i didn't use xp sp2 for 2 weeks,guess that for not using it for along time it would konk out on me.

the sp 2.0 rc2 is not compatible with windows 98 fe but only se,righ click on my computer, select properties and what does it say?if it doesen't say windows 98 se then you will need to install windows 98 se before you can install the sp or if you don't wanna bother with 98 then goto xp or w2k.

using autopatcher xp feb 05 there is an option to remove it.

i would suggest switching from 98 to w2k if possible,you gotta do alot to make 98 fast n stuff where on w2k you don't.

Well ntfs does reserve some of the space on the hard drive where fat32 does not(It's like a book where paper takes up space in that book and fat32 is is like a table with legs on it,it has to allocate those legs for it to stand up correctly),true fat32 can have file allocation errors (alot less than fat because it is still based on it,it is just an extension of fat)where ntfs does not have file allocation errors(Because it is not based on the file allocation table but a journal),fat32 is actualy best on small drives and ntfs on bigger drives,using a compressed drive does indeed give more space but when you access a file it has to decompress it and recompress it(thats alot of work to do)and you loose performance,with a non compressed drive you don't have those extras processor hungry and time cunsuming tasks to perform.so ntfs is faster and more reliable on large drives than fat32 but fat32 can be faster on smaller drives and it's not as reliable as ntfs
indeed i would use ntfs on small drives(defenatly not on a 1 or 3 GB drive),you loose a bit of speed but you keep the reliablity and that could mean less crashing n such.

Marsden: some ppl can't upgrade to xp or 2000
if they can't upgrade then stick to 98 se
you do have a point btw, 98 se is getting older everyday and less and less apps are being supported,same goes for drivers, .net framework.
if only every1 had tons of cash then there would be more nt based oses installed rather than some dos based and more nt based
i for one use xp most of the time but there are some like me who were around in the dos days and like to go under the old os for a change.don't even think of using me just use the good parts of it and put em to 98 se.

got 1 GB,98 sees it,maybe in a few years i'll go past 1 gb
wish we could slipstream the 512 mb fix into the 98 install so we would not need a limit of 512 the to put the rest of it in.maybe the only way is to rewrite 98 se or take parts of it out and put em back in with the fixes.

winxp is better than 98 in most reguards but some stuff may not work on xp(like some old dos apps or 98 only apps) so a dual boot xp/98 will do,sides if you wanna say burn a dvd movie you can't use 98 cuzz max single file size is 4 GB but on xp it can be the size of the hard drive,if 98 serves you well and does what you need it to do then by all means stick to it or whicthever windows works for you, no1 has to goto xp or say 98,they go it what they want=choice.
