  1. For some reason, on some machines, the configuration keep popping up when the user logs in. Just started happening recently. Can't figure out why. Where can I look to see what would be causing it? EDIT: Awesome news on 2.0! I'll check it out soon.
  2. Interesting. The Start Menu is blurred but the frame around the user pic isn't. Same goes for Win7. I never noticed it before.
  3. That's being worked on separately. In case you haven't discovered it already, see this thread. In one of the posts there, Tihiy (the creator of StartIsBack) offered to help with that project, so we'll see what happens. Good luck! --JorgeA Thanks for the info!
  4. What is it exactly? Change: StartIsBack support has been added (alternate Start Menu) Is that what you meant? I meant, what is the product? What is that program that's in beta? DisplayFusion. I've been using it for several years. Follow the link I gave before for the details. It provides superior multi-monitor support. I saw that but I don't get what these menu apps have to do with it. I use Actual Multiple Monitors just fine. They didn't need to add SiB supports???

  6. Seems to work like a charm, thanks! Yup, works good!
  7. LOL! I'll test it in a little bit. Super busy today. If you dont hear from me today then I had no problems.
  8. Correct, DEP itself does not cause a black screen. DEP is fully functional in Win8. It only happens after SiB is installed.
  9. If you have DEP selected for "all programs and services" (not the default), then you might have to exclude StartIsBackCfg.exe from it. I believe this was mentioned early in the development, but as users have to manually change from the default DEP setting to this, it would probably be considered "normal" behavior to have to exclude it from DEP if DEP isn't set to the default "for essential Windows programs and services only". It just strikes me as odd for any program developed in this day-and-age to crash when subject to DEP. I mean, as you say, I can exclude it, but it's a really bad coding habit to slide into. Check DEP. Check ASLR. This stuff should be enabled on everything you do as of at least five years ago. Except I just said default behavior works now. DEP defaults to "all programs and services" on Windows Server. StartIsBackCfg.exe works fine. As for workstations...I just turned DEP on for all programs and again, it worked fine. If you need further help with this issue then you'll have to be a little more specific then "it crashes". What version of Windows are you using? What settings have you changed? In the meantime I'll reload this workstation from scratch and see what happens. Windows 8 Pro x64 - no problem. DEP on and it works fine. Windows 8 Pro x86 - With DEP on, after the install of SiB and I logon I get nothing but a black screen.

Yup, that issue was fixed looooong ago. Default behavior works now.
  12. I've been able to reproduce this a lot. It's also something new as older versions don't do this.
  13. I *think* (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that you have to create a shortcut file to the program in question, rename that, and then pin the shortcut? That's been a known issue for a while....beta 3 of 1.0 I think. The solution is to hit shift then right click and select rename. Renaming from the general tab will cause all sorts of problems.
  14. As was mentioned, turn one of them back on and see what happens. If nothing then turn the other on. Then we'll know if either is the culprit. For me, the only indexing I do is the Start Menu and Outlook. I have search turned off for everything else. So it could very well be the indexing you turned off since that directly affects the Start Menu. I would try that one first.
  15. I use Microsoft Forefront on all my machines which is basically the same thing as Defender and I can not reproduce this at all. Index speed issue? Thumbnail DB issue?
  16. Business license keys are now available: http://www.startisback.com/#business-tab Those who donated $10 or more during development have Business license. Congratulations! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Stay tuned for 2013. Version 1.4 will bring some Modern UI integration. Improvements for enterprise and individual users are also planned. Now that's a Christmas present!
  17. Greyed out might be normal, however, not pointing to a target is not normal. Thus the start menu issue.
  18. Ah, I see. But the shortcuts are the same (target does no to point to file) regardless of whether I search for them via the search box or browse to them via All programs. Yet the context menus are different. Doesn't this suggest that it is not simply the short-cut characteristic that is the problem? Also, have just tried on a Windows 7 PC and the app shortcuts in All Programs/Microsoft Office also lack absolute targets. Yet within the Windows 7 native start menu, the context menu for these app shortcuts do possess a pin to start menu item. Yup, I brought all this up a long time ago before the app was first released. It's a known issue.
  19. Don't really know what you mean by funky special shortcuts Did you look at their properties? The target doesn't point to a file and it's greyed out. It's not a normal shortcut.
  20. Just realised that when I do what I think you did (use the search box to get to an office app within Start Menu), I can use the context menu to Pin to start menu: It is only when I manually browse via the All programs list in the start menu that the context menu item does not appear. Several other context menu items are also absent: Those are funky special shortcuts. Right click them and go to properties and you'll see what I mean. Those can't be pinned. The other method you found should be fine.
  21. Now all you have to do is snap your fingers and make the millions on top of millions of current keyboards out there in the wild turn into brand new, new generation keyboards. Good luck! ;p Also, the first keyboard I saw on new egg had no right winkey. Rosewill RK-101 Black 107 Normal Keys PS/2 Standard Enhanced Keyboard Your looking at a menu key, not a winkey. Granted, you could reassign it but whatever. By default that key will active most menu bars.
