  1. Where is the Update.exe file located, and how do I determine version number?
  2. Looks like that is about dual core processors. Here I have: reply from ...: bytes=32 time<1ms.
  3. Dang it. I have a tendency to sympathise with the underdog and that's why I have been using AMD's - but from an egoisic pow I probably should have gone wtih Intel; all the more so because I've never been into gaming. Be that as it may, anyway I don't run any cpu intensive applications.
  4. Already a new CD in the mail from USA. And I view copyright issues as food for lawyers.
  5. The only reason for considering removal of SP4 is suspicion that SP4 may be the cause of what I preceive as intermittent sluggish operation of my computer. running on a 3.8GHz 6-core AMD CPU and I rely on that to indicate that whatever slows processing, it cant be the CPU. But I may of course be wrong. What else can it be, are there methods I can use to analyze what's going on?
  6. Sorry, I didn't think that far. BTW an interesting subject. Any lawyers around here?
  7. I downloaded Win2k and unzipped the 7-zip file, and got Win2k pro files with extensions: nvram, vmdk, vmsd (0 bytes) vmx and vmxf What can I do with them, don't look useful to me.
  8. What version should I have? Presently I have installed versions 2.0 Sp2, 3.0 Sp2, 3.5 Sp1, and 4.0 client profile?
  9. Can I uninstall SP4 without causing any problems with the installed XPSp3? (Please excuse if I have asked before;)
  10. I am confused about the dating here, are we in 2014 or 2016? Anyway, I installed the TweakUI and now I can't get musicmatch started. MM is one of the reasons why I stick to XP. I think I will reinstall XP and limit my tinkering to implementing the POS update trick. I'll se if I can uninstall TweakUI first. I don't want to fool around with SP4 or anything else. I removed TweakUI, reset computer, and musicmatch is okay again. (Would a reset after installing TweakUI before trying to start MM have given a different outcome?) Something new I now find is that after posting a reply, the thread jumps up and down on the screen. No big deal, but I don't like it!
  11. I turn that bad boy off (disable the Service) IMMEDIATELY after any updates. It (IMHO) drags the system. With .NET Runtime Optimization Service v.2.050727.x86 listed as Manual under Startup Method, is that something I should need to do?
  12. Mine says: Installed REG_DWORD 0x0000000(1) Assume that's the same thing.
  13. Got manual security updates, will wait and see if automatic updates will arrive someday.
  14. Ok, deleted. Now i see I should have gone to the PRODUCT_VERSION subkey. I presume it can be restored if need be. Guess there is more left in the 'mandatory actions' category as well. Would be nice to have it all in one place.
  15. Might be a good idea, gotta see if I can find the hack.
  16. I see no updates since a number of security updates Feb 28, except for the Malicious remover. Should i have more, how to get them?
  17. I don't know what to do, I was hoping that with SP4 installed, everything would from now on be honky-dory. I find it increasingly difficult to grapple with all the technicalities. Age is taking its toll, I'm afraid. As some of you may be aware of, I have some other problems to deal with. But I suppose I could perform the operartion of adding to the rgistry without messing it up, will look into that tomorrow. Is the question now whether ms updates for xp is working? How can I find out about that?
  18. Taking the instructions on how to use the RVM Integrator at face value, I assume this is what I should do: Browse to i386 folder of my Windows XP installation source disk. Choose option of browsing to a destination directory, or let the integrator choose or create one? Choose upgrade Pack, i.e. WindowsXP-USP4-v3.1a-x86-ENU Choose addon pack(s). Re. #4, I haven’t read anything about that, but should I add any of the updates available for the SP4 pack? Or can they be added after installation of SP4?
  19. In his reply (post #5) on this thread, bphlpt links to an article about How to slipstream an XP disc with SP3 and all other updates When Windows XP support ends, here's how to grab all of the updates and create a custom installation disc that has them all pre-applied.Is that something i ought to do with my XPSp3 disc? I have a little problem with that disc, the original refuses to install, it comes back telling me it can't find the EULA, but luckily enough, I made a CD copy and that one works. But I can't make a Rufus version, it won't install anyway. What I am aiming for is of course to have a disk that can do it all in one operation, i.e. install XPSp4 on a blank hard drive. I've got nLite now, and presume that if I take care faithfully to follow the instructions, I'll get what i want. As before, if I use a spare hard disk there isn't anything to be afraid of. I have other pressing problems to take care of so thinking clearly is not easy these days. But I've got to keep my hobby going or I'd go nuts.
  20. No Sir, no problems here - AFAIK. I haven't had any BSOD's, and the MOM error msg appeared just once at the first restart after installation. Since then, all quiet and I am proceeding with updates. Installation of SP4 was of course done on a fresh XPSp3 installed on a newly formatted SSD partition, and no connection with the Web before I was convinced that all installation procedures had been disposed of by SP4 Monitoring Task Manager I could see that further processing and disk access was termianted. I don't know what more one possibly could do. I've been busy most of the day installing utilites and programs that I use and no indications of abnormal behavior have appeared.. What problems may be hidden like a Trojan deep down in the system I of course can't tell, time will show. Until then, I won't lose any sleep over SP4. If you trust it, me too will. It is so comfortabe being able to chose between the default of XPSp4 or XPSp3 at startup. My life doesn't depend on either system, it is all about leisure time use. I don't do programming any more, MASM, Pascal, Unix, FOXBASE, VFP - never again! From before CP/M, MSDOS and all the rest...
  21. Not exactly SP4 related, but close enough, I hope: While I have a reasonably stable XP installed on the 1st partition of my SSD, I wonder: if I install a new XP and give SP4 another try on the 2nd partition, will a dual boot option automatically be installed? That is what happens when installing Win7 after XP. I guess I better disconnect all other drives during the process I actually already have that configuration, but what can I do to boot the 2nd partition? Later: I took a deep breath and installed XP and then SP4 fresh downloaded from the cloud, and left things to develop at their own volition. The only misgiving encountered was when, probably after the first automatic/mandatory restart of the machine, I got the msg MOM.exe Fatal Error, CLR error 800004005, the program will terminate. Since that I left the machine alone until disk activity went down to zero, and now I can restart without any unexpected behavior. Next thing I'm going to enable automatic updates and start installation of my usual utilities and programs. For the time being I remain hopeful that the system now will be well behaved. If all goes well, I'll give SP4 a bill of clean health. Now I can chose which version to boot, the old, SP3 or the new, SP4. What more could I ask for? Maybe something new and a little different that I'm living in new world in the way of "Skin"... Aren't you glad I didn't give up?
  22. All I want is to enable POS updates to XP with as little effort as possible. I don't feel comfortable trying to digest all the information I find on this forum, it makes me dizzy! i think I can get well behaved, up-to-date XP installations without SP4 but updating until 2019 , and that would take one headache away from me. I really don't know what I'd want SP4 for, I am only using the pc for surfing, reading blogs, and reading a newsgroup with Outlook Express - the only newsreader I am comfortable with, and MSWORD (2000 version). So how would the proper procedure look like, what would the sequence of required be? I have to stop playing computer geek and retreat into a 100% position as a user. . .
  23. From Win7, the link is ok. But on XP(Sp4), I got a quite unrelated site. Tried once only. BTW, I understand that SP4 (preferably or mandatory?) should be installed on a new, without updates XP? And auto updates may of course be enabled as sonn as it has been tested and running ok?
  24. Well, it really should be very straightforward, shouldn't it? Here is what I think: 1. Make sure the machine is disconnected from the web. 2. If you haven't already, install Windows XP (Check requirement wrt. Service Pack version) 3. Run latest version of SP4 4. You should not get any error messages or interruptions to the installation of SP4. If anything like that happens, you, or your system is doing something wrong. BTW, I don't recommend using the link to Nero Lite - it took me to a quite different place.
  25. I suggest we forget all past mishaps, they are a waste of time. I am going to continue reinstalling until it all looks honky-dory and well-behaved.
