OK, I guess I'll start from scratch again. The "Managed Machine Service Mini has encountered a problem" msg is displayed as soon as the machine has booted.svcpack.7z Other than that, I haven't yet done enough work to determine if there are other problems. Maybe the svcpack can help with that.

I was unable to insert any files into the post, tried several times but no luck. Here is a sample: [svcpack.log] 1.984: ================================================================================ 1.984: 2016/02/21 13:15:37.875 (local) 1.984: k:\d65b7046fdf75dd8e691b2b0f0a907\i386\update\update.exe (version 6.3.15.0) 2.047: Service Pack started with following command line: 2.047: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 2.047: CreateUserInterface: DefineInstallCustomUI returned 0x0 2.078: Return Value From OnACPower = 1 2.078: OnACPower returned value( 0x1 ) which is Equal To 0x1 2.078: Condition succeeded for section OnACPower.Section in Line 1 of PreRequisite 2.078: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Computer Toolkit is not Present 2.078: Condition succeeded for section SharedComputerTool.Section in Line 2 of PreRequisite 2.078: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\KB925877 is not Present 2.078: First Condition in RDPMUI.Section Succeeded 2.078: Condition succeeded for section RDPMUI.Section in Line 3 of PreRequisite 2.078: SYSTEM\WPA\Fundamentals is not Present 2.078: First Condition in Winflp.Section Succeeded 2.078: Condition succeeded for section Winflp.Section in Line 4 of PreRequisite 2.078: SYSTEM\WPA\WEPOS is not Present 2.078: First Condition in WEPOS.Section Succeeded 2.078: Condition succeeded for section WEPOS.Section in Line 5 of PreRequisite 13.453: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installing k:\d65b7046fdf75dd8e691b2b0f0a907\i386\update\sp4.cat as _000000_.cat... 13.453: VerifyTargetFileSize: Unable to verify size as Source = NULL for file c:\windows\_000000_.cat 14.578: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installation succeeded. 18.109: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11825, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 18.109: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11857, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 18.109: DoInstallation: CleanPFR failed: 0x2 18.109: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 18.109: SetProductTypes: InfProductBuildType=BuildType.IP 18.125: SetAltOsLoaderPath: No section uses DirId 65701; done. 18.265: IncludeDirectoryIdFromInfSection: No DirId found for: DontRemoveOnUninst.DirId 18.281: SupplicantMode is Not Present 18.281: Fist Condition in Dot3svc.CheckSupplicantMode.Enabled Failed 18.281: Condition Check for Line 1 of Dot3svc.Automatic.ExtendedConditional returned FALSE It is so big I created a MSWord doc zip file but again, was unable to plug it in. I have a solution that I will use tomorrow. I have another error I encountered, so much was going on but I believe it happened while installing Acronis and I was trying to perform some details of the installation/registration pocedures, here: Managed Machine Service Mini has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry... Hope the zip is ok, txt or doc both > 500kb. Added a zip file but it isn't here. Going to split and make two posts.

I started from scratch again, had to do it anyway to get rid of the searchwide bug that got into my Firefox. With no network connected, got the same crash at backing up registry so I had to click cancel to continue but aside from that, it all went smoothly. Now I better make a complete backup before doing anything else. Disabled updates and update alerts, it is beginning to look like I'm going to like it! Would be great if I could make a DVD to install XPSp3 + Sp4 for next time ETA : What I miss the most is something to make a proper backup of my running system, a complete no-nonsense backup to store on a different drive, partition, or DVD. REstoring should be flawless and give me back a system identical in every way to the system I had at the time of making the backup. I have tried Macrium (free) but when I insert one of the DVD's I thought would be the 'resque' that Macrium had led me to believe, they won't boot and they contains some folders but don't look like they are what I expected. I think Acronis is the program I should use, I'll have to check the cost, it isn't that I couldn't afford it but how I hate to use money -

Too late, I already tried to follow the instructions. 1. CatRoot2 folder deleted. 2. No tmp*.* files in CatRoot subfolders. 3. Deleted all kb*.cat files in CatRoot subfolders. 4. No C:\Windows.inf folder to be deleted. 5. Deleted all from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. Can I now pull the RJ45 plug, reinstall SP4, and everything should be ok?
-
SP4 installation went quite well, except I had to abandon backup, it crashed when saving the registry. Installing without backup, I got the msg "failed to install catalog files". Nothing else abnormal. I assume that means I am ready for the next 'hurdle'?
-
Where do I find MD5? Should I install the v3.1a paches? The SP4 v3.1a file is 1.040.948.085 bytes.

Thanks for putting things in perspective for me! Right now I am trying to come to grips with nLite, I believe that should make life easier for me. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/nlite-windows-installation-customizer/ I already have a clean XP installation that I made for experimental purposes so I'll start with the first alternative. My XP is an original MS "For Refurbished PCs", version 5.12.2600 Sp3 build 2600. AFAIK, I don't need any additional drivers. Next, I want to create a DVD with XP + SP4 integrated so further installations will be straightforward. I think I see some light near the end of the tunnel. Update: I want to "Create a new XP install source that already includes SP4" BTW, when I shut down the pc earlier today, it downloaded 148 Windows updates.
-
Aha, so that will make a DVD that I can use for installation? Matt 13:10-13
-
Aha, that's all there is to it, write WindowsXP-USP4-v3.1a-x86-enu /integrate and SP4 will be integrated into my installed XP3P3 OS? If that's all there is to it, it looks much more straightforward than anything else I have read It took quite some time before I discovered that, there is so much written.

Been very busy today, expect to be back tomorrow with status report. Tomorrow is today, and I'm back. Had ea hell of a time yesterday, I made a total celanup of the interior of my pc and just when I thought everything was oaky, the computer was stone dead But then it was past bedtime for me so I took (seldom do) a pill, was afraid motherbord, ps and disks all were gone But today I got it all back up and running again. A power connector on a SATA disk was askew and I thougt it might have shorted some power lines. So there's been a lot of work, but now the XP from my new CD is up and running on a 500GB Sata drive salvaged from a MyBook that went kaput on me sometime back. So for the time being it looks like jaclaz may bask in another case of vindication. I haven't tried the original disk again but I wonder why a copy should be better than the original? Anyway, P.T. I have no apparent problems but I expect soon to find some new ones, problems have become the order of day for me. First thing I want to try is to install latest version SP4. Cheers!

I don't think I am capable of solving this problem. I wonder if there is someone here that can help me out with that. I suggest creation of an ISO file, doing the necessary edit, and burning back to a CD/DVD - or better, creating a Rufus stick. But I don't have a clue about how to accomplish the necessary edit. I also find it strange that an original OS CD is useless unless some smart guy can fix it.

i had to use Win7 to read the disk EULA.TXT is there, and here is the relevant piece from the Txtsetup file: spcdname = "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD" spcdtagfilei = "\win51ip.sp3" cd2name = "Windows XP Professional CD2" cd2tagfilei = "\win51ip2" [setupData] SetupSourcePath = "\" MajorVersion = 5 MinorVersion = 1 DefaultPath=\WINDOWS OsLoadOptions = "/fastdetect /noguiboot /nodebug" ForceScsi = 1 ForceDiskClass = 1 ForceCDRom = 1 ............ I'd like to know, is there a workaround to the problem like an edit to the ISO file, or is return of the CD the only way out? Must be one or the other, can't do both!

I bought an original MS WIndows XP Sp3 CD (with sticker) "For Refurbished PCs" - but when trying to install I am told that "Setup Cannot FInd the End User Licence Agreement." I assume that means there isn't anything I can do in order to use that disk? ETA: I made a complaint at eBay that will be relayed to the seller. eBay will step in if no agreeement for return or cancellation with the seller is obtained. In the meantime I'll use the older disk that I have but I had a funny problem using Firefox so I'll have to reinstall and see if the problem is permanent.

I thought I should download the nLite utility but can't locate it. I wouldn't mind giving the latest SP4 version a chance, do I need nLite to install USP4 v3.1a?
-
I guess I'll have to put it all on the back burner and see if I can manage that stuff later on. Grey matter may need a rest. But there's one thing I'd like to know. UCD is what I used to think of as a MSDOS batch-file, to be run from the command prompt. Is that how it should be done?
-
I didn't have much luck installing SP4. I have to cut back on experiments and start using my computer for nornal use only and get some relief. But updates to XPSp3 would be fine, is there a lightweight solution that could be implemented just so I can continue to get updates? I just have to slow down.
-
I installed SP4 v2 but not 100% trouble free. Near the end, where the registry is backed up it looked like it was stuck but dong some snooping with the mouse, it eventually got to the end. So I don't know what errors or problems may be lurking in there. I hope I can install Norwegian keyboard, the US version is troublesome. Besides MS updates until 2019, I don't know what SP4 can do for me. Is it worth the trouble? I'll have to sleep on it.

There are two DOSNET files, both without any extension. The first is declared as INF and is a text file, the other is ORG - file. But I have the same file on another disk and I will use that one.
-
Would it be a violation of some rule if I got a copy of the Windows XP file DOSNET ORG? For some obscure reason, it looks like the i386 files are more vulnerable than others? Anyway, my DOSNET ORG file is not readable anymore, so I wonder if it would be legit to let me have a copy?
-
Super, no SP4 there. The question remains open, why did it go through all the motions pretending that an installation was in progress? Maybe it must be installed on a 'new' XP?
-
Did your PC came with Pre-Installed Windows XP or you installed it by yourself? If you installed it by yourself, could you please tell me how did you get that "Asus" logo there? I made a response before I realized that the question was not for me. But I have the Asus logo all over my computer. But I don't find any answer to the question I raise inthe OP: How can I verif that I have SP4 installed?
-
That's what I expected, mine looks the same. Installaton of SP4 took some time so I thought at first that it had installed but later I've begun to suspect it didn't quite work. Will try again.

I installed SP4 but how can I verify that I am running SP4?
