Hehe... no... we had mentioned it before, but this just adds the kicker. No need to apologize. I understand everything that you're saying. My girlfriend was more upset about the documents and pictures that she had on the laptop, as you said.Although... my girlfriend and I were talking about it last night and she said that yes, she was upset that her laptop was gone, but on the other hand, one day, whoever took it will have to live with the fact that they stole things. Nothing more is going to come from being upset about it or feeling sorry about the situation, so all she can do is learn from the experience, move on, and look forward in life. She's such a positive person... I love her...

Yeah, that's just you Jeremy... It doesn't really matter how many processes it runs... think of it this way - if you have one process for each task, if one of the processes crashes or gets "killed", then the others are still up and running, protecting the other aspects of your system. Services are good as well, because well written services are typically harder for malware to stop than regular executables. For most people that I know, the interface is better than that of Norton (although that's probably not saying much), and for them it does the job (i.e. keeps viruses and other nasties out). Another note about BitDefender... it's not just an anti-virus. It's got other features as well, hence the multiple proceses.

You get a ton of hotfixes, yes, but they're all Pre-SP2. XP-SP0 is no longer supported, meaning that no hotfixes will be released for any vulnerabilities found on XP without SP1 or SP2.
-
Nope... there's no program that will do this for you. A little time and use of the forum search will help you out though. You just need to look at the Unattended Site for the basics.

Yup yup. That's where I'd point my finger. Check your motherboard. Sometimes older motherboards simply can't handle the LBA addresses needed to access the drive past the 128GB barrier. ??? I didn't understand that last bit... was it meant to be "Has anyone built a PC and had so many errors?" - then yes. I have. Welcome to the world of computers.

Ok... for one, a properly configured XP-SP2 install is no slower than XP-SP0. Disable the security center, disable DEP (unless you have the hardware support for it), and a couple of other small settings, and you're in business. The benefits far outweigh the consquences, and most modern hotfixes won't even install unless you've got SP1.

Bah... no time today... I'll have to see if I get some time later this week. -
Minor update... still not sure as to whether or not her parent's insurance will cover the laptop... either way, there's an IBM R51 laptop at the UBC bookstore... really really good deal. IBM R51 Intel Pentium-M 1.60GHz 512MB PC2700 RAM 60GB 4200RPM HD 32 MB ATI Radeon 7500 15.0" XGA display All the extra IBM stuff $1300 CAD For what she needs (word processing, internet, music, movies, etc), it's far more than enough. Not to mention that it's an IBM... and as such will never break. I've basically told her to just buy that one. As for living arrangements, she (understandably) doesn't feel safe at her place anymore. It's the little things that she had over looked when she moved in. We've been talking about it, and I've got access at a family member's basement, which has security grade windows (already tested by some fool who broke the outer pane trying to break in) and a monitored alarm system. So the two of us might be moving in together in a few months...

-Wikipedia - Fanboy(from the previously mentioned PS3 vs XBox360 thread) Need I say more? The problem is that no one is going to bother with this thread because of the types of responses you gave in the other 3. You've basically dug yourself into a hole that's very hard to dig out of.

I really dislike it when people who spread misinformation. That's all.
-
Have you tried using an older version of your video drivers? Have you checked that all your drivers are up to date?
-
I don't really think that it's fair to automatically specify someone's age group based on the type of response you get. I remember on another forum I used to go to, I got a reply from someone calling me a "twit" and other such names... turns out it was a 62 year old man... I'm twenty, and everyone that I asked agreed that I was handling the situation much more maturely than he did.Sorry to say RedCloud, you started that one with the following... [/offtopic] =========== =================================================== =========== On the contrary... when two different versions of software are released, the more expensive and feature rich versions are often built up on top of the base version. XP is XP. XP Pro is XP with extra features. If you didn't understand that, read it again. Then read it again out loud.I'll say this once and for all to try to silence the competition (I know it won't work) - XP Home is not "crippled"! For the majority of people out there, it does the job just fine - without any problems that you wouldn't run into by running XP Pro. On my first computer, I had XP Home for the longest time, and the computer was running 24/7 without any problems whatsoever. Im sure he'll appreciate that.RJ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It always depends on the WAY you say things <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You're welcome. And yes, it all does depend on how you say things. There's always a way of saying (almost) everything so that the other person doesn't become offended.

The problem is that we all suck at PS compared to the two of you... -
You don't need to partition your hard drive to be able to save your files. DeepFreeze can setup a virtual partition for you called a ThawSpace (check the administrative configuration before creating your workstation installer). This partition will allow you to save your files without them being erased on restart.

@Maleko - Is that Console running your command line? or another handy app? @coyotewrw - Nicely done!!!

Read for yourself... In other words... no more ISOs for me...
-
IMHO... that's pretty fugly...
-
Yup... know about that one already... Thanks for the concern though.

Yeah... I just got paranoid again today about loosing my laptop... I've worked so hard getting it to work right and the way I want it...so I bought this. My laptop is never being left unlocked ever again... Not to mention the crazy swedish-partly-converted-to-1337-speak password that I've got for my BIOS lock and another similarly complex hard drive lock password...
-
This is sad... To answer the original question - to the common user there is no difference between running XP Home and XP Pro. There is a reason why it's called XP Professional - it's meant to be used in a Professional environment. It comes with extra tools that allow administrators to do their jobs a lot easier. Redcloud... you need to get your facts straight. XP Professional is software. You've described nothing but hardware. Thazuar - XP Home and XP Pro are both built on the exact same kernel. In terms of stability, there is absolutely no difference between the two.

A password would at least help prevent the thief from getting access to the files (a BIOS and drive-lock password that is). I know you can reset the BIOS password by clearing CMOS, but most people don't even know what CMOS is. A drivelock password would prevent the thief from trying to take the hard drive out and using it in another computer. Unfortunately, not all homes have a german shepherd, nor do all homes that are rented out have proper security mesaures installed.

Saw that a while ago... still manage to fool some artsie classmates with that one though...

@HyperHacker - Look at TweakUI under Common Dialogs->Places Bar. That's what you want to change to make it customized. To simply answer your question, when you open the hardlinked folder on your desktop, in the address bar, you will see C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Desktop\Folder even though the files are stored in C:\Folder (or wherever you have linked them to).
