Overhead projector and MS Office with ATI video card
Zxian replied to chilifrei64's topic in Windows XP
That's very bizarre... My laptop has a Radeon 9000 Mobility video card in it, and I don't experience such problems. When you say zoom, do you simply mean that the font on the screen is larger, or does the output resolution change? -
Nope. You shouldn't have any troubles at all. In fact, even 802.11b should be sufficient for you. g-rated hardware isn't that much more expensive nowadays anyways, and is usually a bit more reliable than b-rated hardware. Oh... and this probably should have been in the Networking section of the forums, not Windows XP.

It's become my favorite method as well...

Sick! Thanks for the heads up! EDIT - I can see the people complaining about the fact that it's broken the 100KB barrier...

You've got a few choices. - Use nLite to integrate all the hotfixes for you. - Use the RyanVM update pack with Signet's integrator (I've found it works better than nLite for integration) - Use the attached batch file Just take all the hotfixes and name them as KBXXXXXX.exe. Place the batch file in the same directory as the hotfixes. Then modify the batch file to point to the XP source directory and run it. update.cmd

Overwrite old files only (when copying/extracting)?
Zxian replied to azagahl's topic in Software Hangout
CAB files may smaller than 7zip. It really depends on the type of data you're trying to compress. To make cab files, you can just use makecab that's included with Windows. For general purpose archiving, I use WinRAR. For something I want to send to someone over the net, I'll use 7-zip. For silent installers, I'll try using both a 7zip SFX or IExpress and use whichever one comes out smaller. -
Integrating Applications via Nlite
Zxian replied to mutahir's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Have you searched at all? That question has been asked time and time again. In a quick sense, not really. There is a group of people who are repackaging their silent installers for use with nLite. Have a look in the nLite section for more info. I still prefer the batch file at T-12 myself. Extremely simple, settings applied to all users, easy to maintain and debug. -
Viruses and Malware come from Kazaa and LimeWire. Torrents rarely contain viruses. And if you're going to use alternate characters, it's μ, not ų.

Is it OK to pull out IDE hard drives?
Zxian replied to azagahl's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I wouldn't dare do anything of the sort. You've already gone through the trouble to open up your case - couldn't you have powered down the computer before that? -
I'll add another vote for Remote Desktop. If you don't have XP Pro or Server 2003, then UltraVNC is my favorite.

.NET Runtime Optimization Service v2.0.50727_X86 I've disabled it since I've only used one program that uses .NET 2.0, and it's in Beta right now (got a nasty memory leak at that...).

Not sure if this is actually a Windows XP question. Isn't Comcast a cable internet company? If so, then it means that you're sharing your internet connection with everyone else using Comcast. If the person nextdoor to you is downloading lots of crap, then your speeds are going to be affected.

Unstable? XP in itself is not unstable. The drivers and programs that are written for it are unstable. As for RAM, does it really matter all that much? For the record, I was using Ubuntu earlier today, and after opening the system monitor (the Linux equivalent of Task Manager), it said that Ubuntu had left 80MB of 512MB free..... imagine that.

Calling the copy command (or xcopy) from a batch file is probably the easiest way of doing this. There's no install option to copy the source to the hard drive AFAIK.

The file transfers over MSN suck though...

Intel Pentium-M's are amongst the best processors there are out there. I haven't heard of a single driver issue with the P-M capable chipsets, not to mention that the performance/power ratio is far better than anything else out there.

@Dagonet' - That's so pimp! Good job! @grafx1 - Nice! Very much my taste in style.

That'd be cool.

Hoho!!! Talking big are we? Multipass is an awesome Winamp skin.. it fits right in with my desktop. And as for MSN... I was just getting sick of Miranda not working, Trillian being just stupid, and Gaim not having enough options...At least there's A-patch!

Just out of curiosity, have you looked at the name of the forum here? There are people here who run Windows XP as their primary OS constantly, and I for one don't have any problems with it. If you don't like Windows, there are always alternatives for you to try. Ubuntu, Suse, Gentoo, FC4, Slackware, FreeBSD, etc etc etc. They're all free, so you'll always get what you paid for.

Opera 8.5 Switchless Silent Installer + several plugins
Zxian replied to Shoshoni's topic in Application Installs
I found a couple of extra button definitions. [Customize Toolbar Custom.content] Button14, "InIE"="Execute program, "iexplore", "%u", "InIE", "Ie"" Button15, "id"="Show popup menu, "Identify As Menu", , "id"" Button16, "id-smileys"="Identify as, , , "Opera", "Smiley Happy" > Identify as, 1, , "Mozilla", "Smiley Unhappy" > Identify as, 4, , "IE", "Smiley Cry"" Add those to your toolbar.ini file. I think the closest to the Firefox example would be my Button15. -
Not to mention that VMware support for Linux is fantastic. I get pretty much the same speed in VMWare using just a default Linux install as Windows+VMware Tools.

Because I find it easier to read white text on black than black on grey. Not to mention that they're pretty, and don't slow newish (<3 years) computers down that much. My parents computer at home is an Athlon 1GHz, 512MB RAM, and it handles themes just dandy. @skeletorscorpse - Classic gets old kinda fast for me. I sometimes forget that I'm running something other than Win9x if I'm on classic.

This would be a first step. - Link It would help a lot if you were to actually take the time to search for yourself. Yes, the forum is deep, but that means that there is a lot of information here. It may not be the information that you need, but you'll probably end up with a definitive answer faster by searching for yourself rather than waiting for an answer. Your main problem lies here: By saying that up front, you are probably going to get a number of replies saying "Search!". I don't think anyone here keeps a document listing all the information regarding all the services available for quick and easy copy/paste to the forums.

@Digerati - I think he's talking about MSN Messenger... not MSN Explorer.
