a sample autounattend.xml - working good
cluberti replied to prathapml's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
It would be nice if you'd post this in the correct section - there's already a Windows 7 unattended section, so please ask Win7 questions there. -
We are trying hard to come up with a workable solution for everyone, but honestly, most of the moderating team have a life that doesn't involve babysitting the 9x forums. I hate to be frank, but due to the fact that the 9x forums are a harbinger of "report this post" emails, name-calling and mud-slinging, and the types of users who end up attacking MSFN (verbally and otherwise) when something doesn't go their way is why we've taken some of the drastic measures against our Polish "friends" lately (and we do apologize for the inconvenience to the legit members from Poland, who we will do what we can to accomodate if they let us know they cannot get in). Other than the obvious spam that hits every forum, we spend the most time, per moderator, going through and keeping the 9x forums clean. It's gotten to be a large investment of time compared to ANY other section on this forum, hence the scrutiny. To wit, one of the options on the table is having a few more moderators for the 9x sections specifically as part of any solution that doesn't involve archiving that section, but again the discussion about this is in it's infancy. No one need be up in arms yet, and we'll make as level-headed and forward-thinking a decision as we can about this. It's just that, honestly, archiving that forum is indeed one of the many options on the table at this point.

It repros with just windows, nothing additional? If so, where'd you get your ISO? Is it MSDN/MSDNAA/Technet?
-
Well, short of debugging, I'd consider simply reinstalling 7 and seeing if it reproduces without doing anything else. If so, the service start will likely have to be debugged (it's complaining there's a handle to a file that has locked said file while you were starting the service).

Windows 7 x64, silent msi switch
cluberti replied to upinya's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
If /qr works, I'll bet /qn is working but because it has no UI you don't know what happened (hence the post above telling you to log your install). Instead, consider /qb+! as the switch, rather than /qn or /qr if you want to see something: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367988(VS.85).aspx -
How to skip the screen with entering product key?
cluberti replied to yanki's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
If you add the product key section incorrectly, or in the wrong location, then yes your unattend will fail. -
How to skip the screen with entering product key?
cluberti replied to yanki's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Windows 7 is a little different than Vista, and what you're doing won't work. Instead, use this if the key is retail or OEM: <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"> ... <UserData> <AcceptEula>true</AcceptEula> <ProductKey> <Key>XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX</Key> </ProductKey> </UserData> </component> ... </settings> If the key is a MAK key, you need to have it in 2 places (sort of): <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"> ... <UserData> <AcceptEula>true</AcceptEula> <ProductKey> <Key></Key> </ProductKey> </UserData> </component> ... </settings> ... ... ... <settings pass="specialize"> ... <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"> <ComputerName></ComputerName> <ProductKey>XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX</ProductKey> <RegisteredOrganization>Organization</RegisteredOrganization> <RegisteredOwner>User</RegisteredOwner> <DoNotCleanTaskBar>true</DoNotCleanTaskBar> <TimeZone>Eastern Standard Time</TimeZone> </component> ... </settings> -
You can install the RTM over the RC using the same instructions as upgrading beta to the RC build, but it's not technically a supported upgrade path, so back up your data before doing so to be safe.

Never create System Reserved partition?
cluberti replied to arctirus's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
There's no setting in the unattend to bypass this, at least not one that's documented anywhere in the WAIK. -
It failed to mount the image - are you sure you ran it from an administrative command prompt, or have UAC disabled? Also, you'll need to be logged in with admin privs to run some of these tools, so make sure you're admin as well.
-
Apparently they've been thinking about doing this for years, but they've cut it every time from the "to-do" list. Perhaps we need a grassroots campaign to try and get them to actually seriously consider that nowadays this should come in the shell itself?

Well, it looks like 192.168.1.64 is trying to request netbios info from 192.168.1.225. Since I don't know what machines are at what IP I cannot say for sure why, but it's fairly innocuous if you own both machines.
-
No worries - stick with the best if you can .

The lack of a response generally would mean no one knows (yet). If you're really anxious, ask Microsoft. Otherwise, figure it out for yourself and post it here to help others. A simple fix I can think of would be to have the command above run via a FirstLogonCommands script in the oobeSystem settings pass in your unattend, but if you want setup itself to do it via an edited .dll, you may be out of luck if you can't edit it.

You mean, like Ultramon 3.0.7 beta?
-
It's a known bug by Adobe, and it seems like it's fixed in 9.1.3 (9.1.2 had the bug, 9.1.3 does not).
-
It can be done, but it's not as clean and it's harder to administer. I would suggest installing DHCP and DNS on your SBS server, and creating the domain. You can use a forwarder to forward internet requests to the ISPs DNS server(s).
-
Very good, and welcome .
-
Seems like perhaps the thread hosting the address bar is hung. Seems odd that it'd happen in 7, but I guess it's possible.

Clients will not fail over to secondary dns
cluberti replied to sherm's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Honestly, I've never heard of that - I believe you, but that's just wierd. How do you have DHCP giving out IP addresses, and are you giving out only your two DNS servers, or do you have any public DNS servers in the list? I've only ever run into AD DNS problems (and never like this, but) when a public DNS server that wasn't part of the AD infrastructure was configured in the DNS for a client. Oh, and welcome! -
Considering the Intel Atom netbooks with the lowly Intel video can hardly run Youtube videos, it's not surprising this guy's box lags on video especially - that GeForce MX has about as much guts as a disemboweled zombie. As to the "anytime" lag comment, we'd need to know more. If the box is slow to bring up things like the start menu, or open apps, etc - then we'll need to really know more about what's going on. If the problems are limited to games and videos, this would not be a surprise. A decent graphics card and bumping the RAM to ~512MB or more should fix that.
-
Note downloading a Windows ISO from a torrent is technically not legal, so be mindful of the warez discussion rules (specifically, it's not allowed).
-
I would consider rolling your own and using something like FreeNAS or OpenFiler (I'm preferential to the former) if you don't plan on using the box for anything other than a storage solution. If you were to use the features of Windows Home Server other than backup, it'd probably be worth the $$$, but if not, it'd be cheaper to do it yourself.

Best thing to do is get the ultimate ISO from MSDN and delete ei.cfg.
