  1. Hi, Im rebuilding a Packard Bell for my cousin. It was using win98se and was corrupted and was infected by a few trojans. I thought i'd help and rebuild their pc. So i pulled out their HDD and put it in my machine and formatted it. then i unplugged my HDD and loaded XPpro sp2 onto their HDD, ran all the updates etc etc. Everything is working fine when in my machine but wheni place the HDD back into their machine it wont boot completely. And gives me a boot error, and asking me if i want to boot in safe mode etc etc. But even in safe mode it still wont boot XP and just repeats the DOS error message above. What can i do??? Thanks
  2. Hi, Each time i start my laptop, it gives me a "Windows System Error-duplicate name appears on the network". Which occurs because i had my wifi card connected then i switched to use my 10/100 network card. Any way to avoid this? It was never a problem before. Its just annoying that the error shows, even thought its not really a problem.
  3. Hi Cartoonite, The Compaq Presario came with Win ME pre-installed. (its actually my neighbours PC) and i believe they have the recovery discs for it. I rebuilt their machine with my XPpro licence for them to test and see how the PC handles the new OS. It turns out that they need to upgrade to 256Mb (which i recommended anyways initially) from 64Mb. So now i have the ram coming in a day and i have the proper licence for them to use since they have decided they definitely want XPpro sp2.
  4. the PC i have has a Win2000 lic but i installed XP (test set up) but i now puchased an upgrade CD with licence.
  5. I am getting an XP pro sp2 upgrade licence and want to know in advance what the instructions are? Can i do a fresh install (my preferred method) with this CD? And will it just ask me for the previous licence details?
  6. Thanks for your responses. The problem has been resolved. In order for us to get internet traffic we had to get the signal above 60%, anything below it would connect but not pass data. I dont know why, but thats all it was. The frustrating thing was that it had worked in the same position a week ago for a few hours then in the morning we couldnt get net access or even a network connection. Nothing was moved or changed. SO later i purchased a 7db antenna which provided us with a network connection but no data pass through. This was when signal was 55-60% and it only hit 60% for a moment then dropped again. Once we found a better sweet spot today, we were getting consistant 60-63% and data was passing through, and net access was restored. The long and short of it was that we needed 60% signal strength in this case.
  7. OK, here goes... Could XPpro sp2 be hindering this some how? I have a wifi router (Dlink DI-714P+) connected to my broadband internet access. The wifi router is connected to 2 desktops (by cat5) and the wifi connects to a laptop (using PCMCIA DWL-650+ card) and 2 other desktop machines (using PCI DWL-520+ cards). All wifi connected PCs within 23m (from front of house through to all of the backyard) work perfectly, but one of the desktops is 25m away (in a brick granny flat at the end of the backyard) and using the standard Dlink antenna's wont get any reception (inside the granny flat). So i purchased 2x 7db antenna's; one for that desktop and the other for the wifi router. When i had connected a 7db antenna to the PC in the granny flat, i got some signal and was temporarily able to surf the net. The next day I couldnt surf the net, but i could see the network in the site survey. So i decided to add teh 2nd 7db antenna to the wifi router to boost it and give a better signal to the PC in the granny flat 25m away. The reception improved to 100% signal quality and 55-60% signal strength, but i still could not get onto the internet or check email. Again the software said i was connected and XP wifi said the same. So, i decided to disable the firewalls and antivirus programs. Still no network or internet access, but network connection seemed fine... I then decided to rebuild the PC again with XPpro sp2 (slipstreamed install, which was the same as before) and have not installed Norton Antivirus or Zonealarm. I also made sure that XP firewall is disabled. I have also tried both static IP address and DHCP for the wireless PCI card (DWL-520+) with the correct gateway 192.168.0.1 (the Dlink DI-714P+ ip address) and my ISP primary and secondary dns details. I have set the correct SSID and channel as well as the correct encryption password too. What else can i try? Thanks in advance!
  8. im trying to hide teh new admin account. the name is Gavin
  9. when you say "Have i renamed the Administrator" account, I have added a changed the original administrator to a limited user and created a new administrator, and thats it. Is that what you mean?
  10. i have XPpro sp2, a fresh build from a slipstream disc i made myself. was the registry key supposed to already be there, or was i supposed to add it? Because i did add it, adn it made no difference at all?
  11. guys, please assist?
  12. also, all the stuff on my desktop seems to be saved to the OS partition, how can i nominate andifferent area for that? (as i thought i did that change when i changed the Document and settings location)???
  13. thanks crahak, Actually I use Firefox but i didnt want to scare anyone off. The time when i got the Windows -Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low was just after the other message Low Disk Space appeared. I had about 8 tabs open in Firefox, hence i suspect that it was all the images that were in the browsers that caused the error messages. How do you adjust the settings in Firefox? Photoshop wasnt open this time, ad usually if im working on a very large file, the error message i get then is "Scratch Disk Full". Thanks
  14. im using XPpro sp2, and have partitioned a few Gb for the OS, and programs and data each have their own drives. However temporary data (images particularly) from IE and programs like Photoshop seem to utilise the C drive (OS partition) Leaving me with Low Disk Space warning and also Windows -Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low How do i nominate a different drive? So that the OS partition remains as clean as possible. Thanks
  15. thanks!
  16. I currently have 6 instances of svchost.exe running, with 3 of them supposedly for SYSTEM and 2 for NETWROK SERVICE and the last for LOCAL SERVICE. Is this normal?? THanks
  17. Yes! It worked, aI just had to enable APM! I have Zonealarm, and did not touch that!!! Thanks!
  18. thing is i cant locate my manual. It used the AWARD Bios though. I have registered on the Aopen support forums but havent received my confirmation email!
  19. I tried setting up this reg key as it wasnt there, but it did not remove the admin? Have i possibly missed something?
  20. in the end it was simple.... i just had to right click the start menu then properties, and uncheck My Network. Sometimes im just looking too close to see whats happening!
  21. I have enabled the Network and XP creates a "My Network Places" link on the start menu. How can i remove that?
  22. Thanks, Had a look at Control PAnel/ power options but it wasnt an option. Also checked out the BIOS power section and cant seem to see where to modify that setting? Its an Aopen AX6B motherboard.
  23. on one of my new builds of XPpro sp2, when i shut down, it takes me to a screen saying "it is safe to turn off the PC now" I then have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to cut the power. How do i set it to power down completely after shutting windows down??? Thanks

    DSO-exploit

Guess what! I ran it without reboooting and it picked up a heap more exploits and when i cleaned it, it cleared the IE exploits too! Im impressed! (and surprised that the regular Spybot 1.3 missed so many, evident after running 1.3TX!)
