i couldnt find anything in the BIOS that would allow me to activate te power to the PCMCIA slots. any other suggestions? Can i copy anything from a 98se install to XP to achieve this?
-
Hi, I would like to know if there is any way that XP can be configured to supply power to the PCMCIA slots automatically as they currently only supply power when a device is detected in the slot. This may sound strange but when using 98se, the pcmcia slots would receive power and after converting to XP, XP disables this feature unless it detects a device, The problem here is that i have a PCMCIA device that only taps into the PCMCIA power and thats it. No other pins are used in the slot and so XP doesnt detect any device being connected. Is there any way around this? Thanks

Thanks Ninnox, In that case, do you know of any other methods to keep the OS partition as lean as possible?

I preformed the un-install and it did leave the games folder. so i decided to run the system restore to the "pre-game installation" point and it seems to have removed the games folder from my F drive which it was installed on! Is that what its supposed to do? BTW it did cause a windows error, so can i restore to that point again?

I have noticed that even though i have assigned separate partitions for the OS(C:), Program files(D:) and data(F:), some software still continue to bloat the OS drive! Programs for example Norton AV lets you assign it to the drive of your choice; in my case D: but there are some parts that still install in the C:! Like Shared Symantec data. How can i avoid this?

thanks! Windows is running fine, so i will un-install. I am testing a game for my friend, but i dont want to screw up my system. Plus i cant justify more time on the PC to the wife!

can anyone please clarify XP restore points for me! Here is the scenario! 1. I create a custom restore point just before i load up some new software! 2. I load new software. 3.try to run program, but there is insufficient resources; So, I know that i can either restore the system back to point 1, or un-install the software. What is the better option??? Further questions! i.Does restoring to point 1, regain disk space used by the software? If not, can i just deleted the new program folders it created? ii. If i un-install the software, will this be the cleaner option? Thanks

thanks, but i have already set it up, Just querying the localhost bit. since its not on the localdisk!

thanks! BTW. I am setting up to run PHP and MySql and Apache on my laptop (for web site forum testing) and although it has recommended that these be installed on the C: I have installed it all on the E: instead. So what changes do i need to make when it asks me to enter "localhost"? Thanks!

hi, I have tried cd e:/ but it doesnt open up e drive, or even if i try chdir c: this still keeps me in c:/documtents and settings/gavin> what can i try???

thanks. atm i have assigned 2.5Gb and 1.69 is used up already and thats just XP plus Symantec Shared Folders (dont know how to move these, I was only able to nominate the installation location but not the Symantec Shared info location) Data and Porgrams have their own partitions.

I will have a separate partition for XP, so i am curious to know what is the smallest partition size i can have. Thanks

turns out that TweakUI cant handle changing the "Shared Documents" Folder and the only way to do this is via regedit. Check this link I thought its pretty odd since TweakUI indicates that it should handle it.
-
Hi Gabriel, I am trying this now with a Brand new fresh install, and Tweak UI (latest version) and it only lets me change My Documents but not the "Shared Documents" Any thing i am missing???
-
thanks again, BTW, you wouldnt happen to know the answer to my question in the XP section about using the Briefcase?
-
surely some one must have used Breifcase tool?
-
when i move about 10Gb of data from one partition to a different partition, i presume that the data is re-compacted, (partially like defragging) Is this correct? As i am trying to figure out if its worthwhile to it will make any difference when shifting the 10Gb of data onto a different drive. Just curious!!!
-
Can i use the "Briefcase" to store my outlook contacts and outloook to-do's??? This way i can use my laptop as my outlook and email client and outlook on the desktop will sync the Contacts and To-do's only. (I wont use it for my emails as i have too many of them)

at the moment, im physically moving my HTPC from the lounge to the office to do some editing, but its a tedious task, (hence KVM isnt a true solution either) but since XPpro sp2 are installed on all my machines, i shouldnt have any problems using the remote desktop should i?
-
thanks prathapml, Would you know how to change this after installation has already happened? Thanks
-
I am yet to try both VNC and Remote desktop, but i was hoping to keep it simple from behind the firewall. Is Remote desktop that bad? I am liking the idea of not having to buy a KVM switch!

Christer Tamm, What you need to do is get into the C:\Windows\System32\ folder of a non SP2 build and copy the config.nt and autoexec.nt files. Then paste them into the corresponding system32 folder in the new SP2 build. This worked for me, let me know how you go!

Hi, Im looking to utilise XP remote desktop to access most PCs inside of my lan. I am curious to know how secure this is, as my lan is currently working behind a D-Link firewall router. Are there any special settings to enable to ensure that any remote access it strictly within this LAN?

Is this possible, as i want to remove this from the C: local disk and place it on a different partition!
