Is it important to have an individual disc for each PC?
GLO replied to GLO's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Currently I use a slipstreamed and unattended CD i made about the time when XP sp2 was released. I have used the master CD for each install, but i suspected only recently that it has attempted to load drivers not relevant to a desktop! ie laptop rechargeable battereies I have done this and named all the PCs GLO then the install automatically assigned some sequence of numbers behind it ie GLO-123388 I will give that a try. BTW it seems to now only create an administrator account, and only opens up in the admin account even after adding users after the instal -
thanks! I will play some more!

Thanks for responding. What happens when i log in is the nlite cmd window opens and says something like nlite registry key remover not found nlite registry key remover not found nlite registry key remover not found nlite registry key remover not found then that window closes, and then 'notepad' opens with that other message. I have to manually close it. This happens each time any user logs in.

The message below pops up in a notepad window after logging in? [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787 what does it mean!

for some reason, after i do this it wont let me log back in until someone logs in first?? Thanks! But i think the first reply should do be a bit easier to remember. This would only shutdown, not reboot; which is what i really need.

As a non-exhaustive list : page file (preferrably on a different physical drive, for performance reasons) 'my documents' Infact the whole user profile from documents and settings can be moved I believe (search for it). temp files (go to System Properties -> advanced -> environment variables, and change the 'TEMP' and 'TMP' variables in both the user and system areas to point to another drive. Note you will probably have to change the user setting for each individual user you have) Once you have done this and rebooted you can clean out the original directories (in windows\temp and in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp) Temporary Internet Files (IE) IE -> tools -> Internet Options -> Settings. Change the path here to somewhere else. Of course, use nlite to cut down the size in the first place! Other Points : remove all the *.pnf files (NOT .INF!) from the windows\inf directory - these mount up after a while, they are recreated as required. I am sure there are more that others can add to this. Personally, I would like to find a way to change the default uninstall location for Windows Update (when using the website I mean) to something other than the windows directory. Hope that helps SP. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> After implementing this, my OS is smaller than 1gb!

I have a slipstreamed nLite UA install disk that i created a while ago. The problem i am having is that on my 160Gb HDD i have it set up with 3 partitions. OS, Programs and Data. Now, the disc works perfectly if i format the entire drive, but i want to know how i can set it up to re-install windows on the OS partition only. In the past it would install the new windows onto the Programs or Data partitions which i dont want.

Re-install XP with Unattended CD on same partition
GLO replied to GLO's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I have used the UA disc plenty of times and it works fine, its just that if i need to re- install and want to keep the existing partitions, it typically writes to the other partitions without any OS already on it. Then when booting back up it gives me a choice of which partition i want to boot from. But as i am not running 2 different OS, i really just need it to re-install over the existing C partition -
I have never used ghost but i am curious to know the time factor of reloading a ghost image versus the unattended install? Thanks

There is 2 parts to my question. 1.Im just curious if there would be any benefit to create another unattended install disc. 2.Ifso, can it be set up to create the partitions are required? ie 10gb OS, 5gb Programs and balance of HDD data. Can this be done?

How do you remap them?

I figured out the reason now. I had a firewall setting that did not grant access to the IP range. Its all working now!

I have a small workgroup network consisting entirely of XP machines, 6 in total. All have personal firewalls and there is also a DLink firewall providing overall service and DHCP service. I use Windows file and printer sharing and in the past all 6 machines have seen each other, shared files and used the printers. Now one of the machines gets the message "the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available" when I try to show the Network Neightborhood list of other machines. However I can ping the other machines and access them using 'Remote Desktop' What setting could be wrong?

I know that i can select each individual drive, such as C:\windows\system32\defrag.exe c: But how do i automate this with multiple partitions? Im looking to run defrag cleanup NAV Spybot 1.3tx I know how to run a single instance of it, but i dont know how to set it to do C,D,E drive consecutively with a single command. Thanks

What am i missing???

Is there a way around this? Thanks
