I was trying Eset NOD32 3.0.551 at the time. I tried Eset NOD32 3.0.560 a few hours ago. The same problem. It occurs when I try to view a DVD whose files are on my HDD with CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra 7.3.3104a.1. The problem never existed with Eset NOD32 2.x releases and the second I uninstall Eset NOD32 3.x the problem vanishes. Reinstall and it comes back. I suppose it may be a system-specific problem on my end but I don't even know where to begin looking and lack the time right now. I'm sticking with Kaspersky 7 for the time being.

I have to say that I switched from Eset NOD32 2.7 to Kaspersky 7 for some testing and didn't switch back for a couple months. I think Kaspersky 7 is definitely a heavier load on the system but it's not insane. That said I like them both. I recently uninstalled Kaspersky and tried the new release of Eset NOD32 3.0. I have to say that I was extremely disappointed by the new Eset NOD32 release. They finally fixed the UI to be much more friendly but they also dumbed down the software, IMHO, and removed the power the user is given in making decisions even when using the advanced features. Everytime I booted my system Eset NOD32 3 blocked my cable connection. I'm sure if I dug deeper I would have found a way to stop this but my biggest problem was if I tried to open a DVD with PowerDVD the result was PowerDVD crashing. This was somehow due to Eset NOD32 3.0 being installed. Uninstalling Eset NOD32 3.0 resolved the problem. I've been a huge fan of Eset NOD32 for awhile. This truly saddens me. I'll try Eset NOD32 again in a few months maybe. For now back to using Kaspersky 7.

CloneCD is capable of copying DVDs not just CDs. AnyDVD is started after installing CloneDVD2, as well. Sorry that I can't resolve the rest of your problem, though. rotjong

I was in the same boat. I had v1.3.1 but wanted to at least have the benefits of 1.4.0. So, for the heck of it I tried removing the trailing '1' from the 1.4.1 download link and voila! Try this link. rotjong PS: Grrr. Apparently it's v1.4.1, as well. *sigh*

Raxco intentionally released it early to some people including myself. I guess one of those people posted it to USENET. I don't consider it a leak, though, since they meant for it to be released early. I got that email on the Sept 5th and have been using 8.0 build 30 since then. I've used PerfectDisk since version 4. The GUI is pretty ugly, IMO. rotjong

One thing I like about Elby & Slysoft products is they take nearly no thinking to get the job done right rotjong PS: Actually the help file is a local file once you install CloneDVD mobile. It's very basic and just runs you through the steps. A no-brainer.

There are a number of programs out there. Slysoft AnyDVD used in conjunction with Slysoft CloneDVD mobile allows you to do what you want quite well. Of course, neither program is free but both have trial versions you could experiment with. I, myself, don't own an iPod but I did this once for a friend and had no issues at the time. rotjong

It might just be me but after installing 8.0.0683 Branches release all the sounds in WLM got screwy if not vanishing. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled 8.0.0566 and it still has no sounds. Never had this problem before. Pros: 1. GUI colours are far better [not so **** bright] and it's crisper 2. Status icons are definitely better and there is once again a 'blocked' icon Cons: 1. GUI looks more boxy to me than 8.0.0566 2. I noticed an oddity while PM'ing people. If you space messages too close together they don't get a new timestamp. They just get appended to the previous message display. I don't know if the party on the other end sees it this way as well but for me it was very very annoying 3. Apparently this messed up the WLM sounds on my system. Now I have NO sounds at all. *sigh* 4. Sounds in WLM are now WMA files (ie new message, new mail, contact online, etc). I hate WMA. But, at least you can still browse to whatever sound file you wish to use (ie old WAV files). rotjong

I was like you for many years. I experimented with different AVs on a test computer I had but I never ran one on my main system. I'd compare them to see what AV caught what virus, etc. Personally, I'd prefer to still not run one but alas I decided that statisically speaking I'm about due to get hit by something. I use common sense and I'm always careful but sometimes that's not enough. I didn't run a real-time AV until probably last year. So figure I lasted 15 yrs w/o getting hit by a virus. I figure I might as well just add that one extra line of defense and NOD32 doesn't really use many resources. I actually can't tell the difference on my system between when it's running or when it's not. rotjong

Yes, InoculateIT was a free release from Computer Associates. They killed it off when they released the very affordable [but not free] eTrust EZ Antivirus. I agree in that one shouldn't require a third-party AV to protect an OS. However, this is one of those in an ideal world deals for me. As it stands we don't live in one and I doubt we ever will. The last thing in the world I'd want is MS to acquire Eset or just about any other AV company. God help us if they picked Symantec... can you imagine the bloated pile of dung they'd release? I have enough issues with MS' security problems w/o depending on them for an AV product as well. I foresee an MS AV product being like Symantec with their seemingly endless discoveries of flaws in their security and antivirus products. So very ironic. After enough years experimenting with a ton of different AVs I've settled on using Eset NOD32 for my day-to-day AV. For me it has the best of everything I need and doesn't bog down my system. It might not be empirically ranked as the number 1 AV product but it's close enough. rotjong

Using my PX-708A and PX-716A Plextor drives I have yet to have any problem burning any discs be it audio, data, or DVD. It seems some people have had these issues but I haven't and I've burned a lot of audio mixes w/o skipping. Makes me wonder if it is an issue between drive brand and media brand but who knows. rotjong

Well, I know my brain doesn't work like most people I know so I tend to approach things a bit differently. It's possible it's a BIOS issue but I've never used an HP, personally. There are a few things that come to mind that are hardware related. How's the battery on the mobo? Is it low/dying? Is the CD-ROM drive working alright? Is it possible to try using another CD-ROM drive? How are the cables? Any issues with the HD? And, if all else failed, just to prove a point to myself I would actually try to install something like Win98 on it just to see if it worked. With the age of the system chances are you'll probably have issues with the modem. If HP was anything like Campaq [before the merger] their hardware compatibility sucked and they wouldn't help you much. Anyway, just a few thoughts. rotjong PS: If the SP2 disc is a full install try using that disc instead of the one you already tried and see when an error occurs then.

Using a program like VideoInspector is nice. It'll tell you what codecs are needed for sound and video for a given file and if you don't have them installed you can grab them. Personally, I detest codec packs. rotjong

I installed XP Pro on an old P-233 with 96 MB of EDO RAM about 3 years ago. I ran it as both an FTP server and did some actual work with it. It could be on the slow side and I turned all the bells and whistles off but the thing was rock solid. It ran for about 4 months between reboots which were usually caused by power outages or the installation of a slew of windows updates. If I could pull off XP Pro on my old piece of junk I'm pretty sure a normal XP install with the fancy bells and whistles turned off [w/o nLiting] should run on that HP. Does the XP disc work fine in other systems? Is it an OEM disc? rotjong

Personally, I would spend the extra money for a Plextor. I've done so with 3 different Plextor drives over the years and all three still work like they're brand new. They've been solid and reliable for me. I think, as with most opinions these days, it's subjective. The technologies used by the manufacturers are all good but in the end it comes down to the quality of the manufacturing. For me, I'll stick with Plextor because they haven't let me down. So, the real question is this. Can you afford to spend the extra money on the Plextor and if so will you be happy spending it? If the answer is no then the choice is obvious... rotjong

I've had an issue with WMP 10 playing MPEG files for awhile. It would take ages for the files to open even from my HD. Even 200 meg files took too long and it was insane if they were 1 gig in size. I was at a loss as to the cause and couldn't backtrack to when it started. Nonetheless, after reading this I searched for the mentioned file for the heck of it. Tada, I found mcspmpeg.ax located in two locations. It was installed by my MainConcept MPEG encoder and it was in my Sony SoundForge plugin directory. I uninstalled the MainConcept encoder along with the related DirectShow filters and the problem vanished. If they have the same ATA type then it should be fine although access to that slower slave drive will obviously be a little slower but for a free drive it's nothing bad. It used to be that different ATA drives shouldn't be on the same IDE cable. I don't know if this is still true.
