  1. Nothing beats the good old long hand multiplication and division. Then again, we would be calculating forever! Oh, the benefits vs disadvantages.
  2. Depends on what software you are trying to install and switches the software installer allows. You can probably run the setup.exe with a /help or /? switch to figure out what the switch is for a silent installation. Otherwise, this question could be asked in the Software section where all types of silent installation is discussed. This is probably not appropriate for this section.
  3. Use imagex to grab an image of your physical vista installation. You may want to run sysprep beforehand but probably not necessary. then, apply that wim image to the virtual HDD. fix the bootloader so vista is loaded. also, it may not load unless because of GUID reliance. you'll have to make that installation GUID-independent.
  4. A more indirect and probably rather more difficult, but more versatile method, is to use Grub4Dos as your boot menu rather than XP's. See my signature for all the links. You'll have to use the swap drive method to fool the BIOS to think HD1 is HD0 and HD1 is HD1. Basically, that is the problem you are having.
  5. SCOW n any of various vessels having a flat-bottomed rectangular hull with sloping ends, built in various sizes with or without means of propulsion, as barges, punts, rowboats, or sailboats.
  6. I didn't know Acronis could recover partitions. Good to know.
  7. You may want to look at MathType 6.0 by DesignScience. It can display limits on top and below in Inline Equations. I used to use MathType in 2003 version. But now that 2007 has it built in, there's really no reason I need MathType anymore, although it may be a little more capable than the built in equation editor. Moreover, the built-in version supports colors, which Mathtype 6.0 just now introduced. Hence, there's no reason for MathType except for the Inline Equation problem that you are experiencing.
  8. The reason it has 395 posts is because it's not as easy as putting your files from the CD to the USB. Wake up! Forget it. Just use your CD. You'll save 3 weeks trying to install from USB when you could install from CD in 45 mins. But, then again, if you prefer 3 weeks trying to install from USB, go right ahead.
  9. Sweet. I like the color in your script, Gunsmoking. I had been trying to add color for a long time to my command scripts. Search hi and lo on the web but the procedure evaded me.
  10. You'll need software that recovers partitions. I've never really tried partition recovery software, but try Active@ Partition Recovery (http://www.partition-recovery.com/). It $$. But I think you may be able to find free partition recovery software if you search. I'm sure there's a free one out there.
  11. Look in your "AutoCorrect" options and see if under "Replace text as you type", long is in the list to be AutoCorrected as loong.
  12. I understand your frustration. What is happening is when the equation is part of a line, it changes to an "Inline" equation. For Inline equations, the limits will always show on the side instead of top and bottom. For "Display" equations, however, the limits do show on top and bottom, but you cannot have any other text in that line. See attachment below which toggles Inline vs Display. It's a limit of word that Inline equations show the limits on the side only.
  13. Yeah, I think it might be with corrupt partition table. Sometimes, it could be a sign of a bad drive. It happens to me. I bought a Maxtor 300 GB drive. It's a year old. It's giving me problems despite having reformatted. It would be detected and then windows would not detect it. Sometimes, even if windows did detect it, it would disappear. Then, I get this, your partition X needs to be checked for consistency on boot. There are also bad sectors on it. Good thing I have 5 year warranty. This thing is being RMA'd. (Ummmm. I'm also suspicious that dual booting with Vista/XP had to do anything with it. I mean the different is the way they partition the drive. I think I may have formatted with Vista and XP and that causing the conflict in partitions.)
  14. Plug in your USB. Then right click. Go to properties tab or go through all the tabs. There should be a tab that tells you what to do when you plug this USB in.
  15. That screwed up my system. My USB keyboard and mouse wouldn't work after this. Maybe I installed the wrong one. Anyway, I had a WIM image. I simply rolled back and was up again. Still problem with SM Bus though.
  16. Shhh.
  17. Here's one: There are nine iron balls exactly the same size (as in diameter, circumference, not weight), shape, color. However, only 1 weighs more than the rest. You have scales. With exactly 2 weighings, how can you determine which one weighs more than the rest. * You cannot put the balls on the scales one by one and call it one weighing. Meaning, you can't put one, then another, then another on either scale. If you want to weight 3 balls, you must put all three at once on the scale you want. * One weighing means, say for example, putting 3 balls at same time on right scale and 4 balls at same on on left scale. Other do's or don'ts will be provided based on answer. If you know the answer, do not tell us the answer, just say you know.
  18. This motherboard (GA-P35-DS3L) gives a blunt beep that is sometimes long and sometimes short at every cold boot and every restart. After this beep is the short typical system beep. What is that blunt beep? It's almost as if the speaker is not working properly. But then, the short system beep tells me the speaker is working. It's annoying me like crazy.
  19. Thanks for clarification. I was using 12,000 bottles.
  20. My old ASUS board was P5GDC-V. I think it used the 915 chipset. I can't remember. for like 2 years, I had been using my SATA drive as a standard IDE drive mode. Then I learned that I was not taking advantage of AHCI. So, I reinstalled XP and used F6 to provide the AHCI drivers. WHOA! A big difference in speed. I immediately recognized it since the installation of XP was superfast (< 10 minutes). Also, much faster when creating BartPE CD ISO's. Copying is faster. It seems I'm missing out. I bought the Gigabyte from Newegg. Will they take back what I have already opened? I'm not sure if I want to send it back after installing the processor, heatsink and everything. I don't want to go through that process again. I'll just live with it. One thing still bothers me. The BIOS setting has an option for AHCI mode. Why is it there if it is not supported anymore???
  21. 1. I would say no floppy - don't try unless you know how to boot XP/Vista using some other means. Basically, you need some other way to start XP/Vista if something wrong happens. Until you find an alternative way to boot XP/Vista (e.g. CD-R, USB flash drive), then do not try this. Remember Murphy's law. It's happened to me while I was testing and it will happen to you. I was prepared since I have a floppy drive. 2. Menu.lst is a simple text file (txt) renamed as an .lst file in simple terms. You can download a sample menu.lst from the grub4dos link (see my signature for link to multibooting). Once you download the sample, you can make changes to menu.lst using Notepad. 3. Intrigued by Vista's capabilities??!! I haven't used Vista in MONTHS! I hate to even see it now that I've been playing around with it. XP has a much cleaner, leaner interface than Vista. In retrospect, I wasted my time. The only thing good that came out of Vista was it's installation process (much better), it's update methods, and ImageX. ImageX rocks. Here is my suggestion: a. I'd say since you are a novice, you need to maKe a BartPE CD first and get to learn how to use it, know it, familiarize yourself with it. b. Then learn how to make this BartPE CD multiboot, meaning, you can give it a grub4dos menu that can boot to BartPE from that CD or boot XP/vista from your HDD. This offers you the alternative to your floppy. Head over to www.911cd.com/forums. I have a post there how to do that. c. Then, once you find that your CD works, put BartPE on a partition of your HDD following the link provided in first post. Once that is working, then follow the directions in the first post to make your XP/Vista boot independently.
  22. Aaaaargh! Then why does it have that as an option on the BIOS? AHCI made a BIG difference in speed on my old ASUS board. I guess I made a mistake. Here's another problem: In device manager, in other devices, there's this "SM Bus Controller" that I can't find a driver for. I pointed to all the folders on the CD. I even installed all the recommended drivers from the mobo CD using it's autorun. However, it won't go away. What the heck is that and where are the drivers for it?
  23. PuntoMX, I just got my GA-P35-DS3L setup with E6550 Core 2 Duo processor. I installed a Seagate 400 GB SATA-II drive. I want to use it as AHCI. I enabled it and enabled native mode. However, neither the MOBO (during POST and in BIOS setup) or Windows setup will recognize the drive. I have to disable AHCI mode in order to see the drive during post (and in BIOS setup) and Windows will recognize it. What am I doing wrong? I looked for the drivers on the CD but the ones I found do not work in Windows XP setup. Help appreciated.
  24. The original poster did not mention he wants to open a folder or drive from the command prompt. Hence, his post is vague. I hasn't mentioned what he's trying to accomplished. Again vague. Once can only wonder with a post like that. Anyway, explorer d: will certainly open the d: drive from the command prompt. However, from the run box, you simply need to type d:. Again, as already mentioned, I don't see his purpose in copying explorer everywhere. His posts are unclear as to what he's trying to accomplish. It should be a clue to the original poster - what are you trying to accomplish?
  25. Anyone have a solution to this yet? I just bought an APC battery for my desktop and I'm getting this annoying error.
