  1. while searching for more aero help, I ran across a program called Vista Manager that turns on the Aero interface and you guessed it, it still didn't come up? Is it possible it didn't get installed? Is there a way to manually install it from the DVD? Does Vista Home Premium Upgrade have it included? I know Home Premium is suppose to have it and assumed the upgrade has it also.
  2. Unfortunately Aero still isn't coming up. I re-evaluated 3 times now and trying different things. but no luck yet. and I do have the latest drivers from nVidia. Also, I downloaded the cascade demo and it looks awesome! I can't wait for some DX10 games to be released. -=Mark=- ps. I just noticed my defragmenter has been awefully quite for the last 15-20 minutes. Hope everything is ok.
  3. ok, I have Vista registered again. I updated my score. I was given an option that it detected new software and to rerun the score. My video was rated at 1 before the score, now it's at 5.9. My processor is rated at 5.7 and everything else is rated at 5.9. Aero still doesn't show up. Any more ideas on getting Aero up and running? -=Mark=- ps... Are there any DX10 titles available yet? or even some sample demos? I can't seem to find 1 single program out there for DX10 yet.
  4. My old card was an Radeon X1900XTX 512mb. I got impatient and reinstalled windows. I figured it was some conflict between the xp that was installed for a month and loaded with all kinds of software and Vista. This time though, I chose to do the complete install or whatever they called it. It saved XP into a .old folder and installed only Vista which was nice. Had no Aero interface, but had 14 updates to install, one of which was drivers for my 8800GTS. Unfortunately for me, Vista wouldn't let me in my computer after updates were installed. I had it do an auto-registration and it said my key was in use. now I have to wait until tomorrow and spend the day on the phone with MS to fix this mess. sure is horrible being treated like a criminal when you buy their software. you'd think they'd have a better activation system in place by now. before it was smart enough to know it was being reinstalled on the same computer. I sure hope I don't have to go through this every time I have to reinstall windows. This could be a big PIA! Especially when I average 2-3 reinstalls of windows a year. sometimes more depending on the upgrades I install. /rant thanks for the advice everyone, I'll try the properties thing and do the re-evaluate hardware tomorrow if Aero doesn't show up. hopefully it won't ask me to register it again ps... I forgot to add that it had an evaluation mode with "Reduced Functionality." when I clicked on it all I got was a browser to surf the internet. oh yeah, and of course an option to buy a new key. I wonder how many people will end up paying for Vista twice or more.
  5. I've had Vista for a few weeks now and decided to get a DX10 compatible card and see how the Aero interface works. I installed my Video card (Leadtek Win Fast PX8800 GTS TDH 320MB). Then I installed the latest nVidia drivers from nVidia's web site and still no Aero? I didn't notice DX10 installing and ran windows update and still no Aero. Can someone help me get Aero up and running plz. -=Mark=- PS.. I bought Wndows MCE 2005 with Vista Home Premium Upgrade DVD.
  6. I bought Windows MCE with a Vista Premium Upgrade DVD. Is there a way to slipstream the two together. been looking through the forums and most everything is for the regular Vista. it would be awesome to be able to slipstream these two windows into one. Thanks in advance
  7. I have a Lite-On DVD Burner with lightscribe and it came with nero in the box. I have burned many DVD's already(Verbatim and spin-x), but this is the first ISO image I have tried with it. Whenever I select the iso, it automatically switches to cd mode and claims it is the iso image that wants a CD and wont allow me to select a dvd mode. maybe it is an issue with nero? but I bought a 25-pack of HP lightscribe CDs and it burned ok. (but the windows didn't take with the driverpacks and my raid drivers, guess I'll try again) Thanks for the help all.
  8. I have already done that as stated above. It doesn't allow me to select a dvd. all the drives say they are cd only with no DVD options anywhere. when I try to burn it anyway, it says,"Sorry, your compilation cannot be written to this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make it compatible with the current disc." This makes me think I need a dvdimage program with dvd options? maybe the image for DVDs are different than CD images? anyway, this is driving me crazy. I have been searching everywhere and have not really come up with anything that seems to work.
  9. Sorry if this has been answered before, but search couldn't get me to what I needed. First, I just finished creating my slipstream Cd with SP2 installed only(Windows pro installed from my slipstreamed CD just fine on a single hard drive). Now I am slipstreaming RAID drivers as my spare computer has no floppy and I don't feel like removing one from one of my other computers. I just finished installing my drivers into my slipstreamed CD using Driverpacks and creating the ISO with CDImage. I now need to burn it to DVD as I'm out of CDs. I fired up Nero as I figured it would just burn the image to DVD, but it says it won't burn the image to anything other than a CD. and yes I'm in the DVD section of nero. I thought all images were able to be burned to any media as long as there's enough room on the media? do I need a DVD Image maker? any help on working around this?
  10. I was going to reinstall XP. I want to make it more secure by creating a user account to log into. is there an easy way to do this? I tried this once before and I was lost on setting permissions and all the settings settings. sorry if this has been answered before, but couldn't find what I was looking for with search. -=Mark=-
  11. I'm not sure why it would be impossible? unless there is something a TV does to activate a signal. seems there would be a simple hardware hack or a pass-through device to accomplish it. maybe the RCA jacks would work? they only need a single cord and wouldn't be able to trigger anything to turn it off/on. thanks for the FRAPS program tip. looks like it might do the trick.
  12. I'm not sure what your problem is, but I only install SP2 as it has SP1 in it already. before I made a slipstreamed SP2 CD, I just formatted the hard drive and installed windows, then put in a SP2 I had burned to CD beforehand and then installed all my other drivers afterwards. another method I used before I had a CD burner, was to format and install window. only install my NIC driver to get online and just run windows update repeatedly and have it install it for me. then when all the updates were done, then I'd install all my other drivers. Hope this helps. -=Mark=-
  13. S-Video doesn't show up in nView at all? I even tried my other video cards and have the same problem on them all. is there a special driver I need like the WDM I need for the video-in to work?
  14. Hello all, sorry if this has been answered before, but couldn't find what I needed with search. also sorry for repost. I placed it in MCE area figuring more ppl would have experience with this problem in there, but it seems to have lower traffic in there. I just bought a new X1900XTX and it has video capture (aVIVO). so I thought I'd hook it up to my other computer and capture my game, using MS Movie Maker 2, to post gaming video on our guild website. I used the S-Video plugs on both video cards (the multi-plug ones that came with the video cards). used S-Video IN on the X1900XTX to the s-video OUT on the 7800gtx. I then fired up movie maker and selected to capture video using s-video and all I got was a flickering black screen? I looked on my spare computer and couldn't find an s-video device listed anywhere or a way to turn it on (eVGA 7800GTX) I just assumed the s-video port would come on at the same time as the DVI port and just mirror the images from the DVI port to the s-video port. (it's what happens on my main rig with dual DVI monitors until I tell it to use both seperately) any help would be greatly appreciated. -=Mark=-
  15. Thanks for the link to the malware guide. I won't be going over to my friends for a day or two, but downloaded everything to cd to install. I did defrag and no luck luck. it is definitely a missed virus as it chews up the cpu time causing huge lag. and as for diskkepper, I already have the last 3 editions, but I'm not buying from there anymore. I just reinstalled it on my machine on a fresh install and it says I have to buy an annual upgrade to get updates it is a great program, but I'm not paying a yearly fee for a defragmenter.

  17. Sorry if this has already been addressed. but I just couldn't find it through search. I just left my friends house who has spyware bad. found like 125 between Spybot and Adaware. I even ran Ccleaner to clean up the regisrty and the system is still slow. it just lags at anything you do. you hit the start button and it takes a few seconds for it to draw on the screen. I also installed AVG and no virus were found. I have this happen most of the time and end up just reinstalling windows. This is a serious pain to do every 6-12 months and would like to know of any programs or tricks I can do to recover the systems speed. I do have Ghost to make disk images, but it's still a pain to do. TIA -=Mark=-
  18. I don't know the exact error, my game just tells me "Application Error", and when I looked into it it said I ran out of RAM. The error occurs anywhere from an hour to a few hours of game play. I play Everquest II with all the gaming option turned off or at minimal settings. I also turned off my sound in the BIOS. I even didnt install anti-virus software. but I run online virus/spyware scans and get no errors. I also have a macro program for the game I sometimes use, and it makes me run out of memory quicker. I was just wondering if I could free up more memory from Windows Home to prolong the error until I can afford the 2GB of RAM the game wants. 512mb is minimum and I found an old 256mb chip I added to my existing 512mb. I ran memtest from BIOS and it ran for about 7 hours with no errors. everything else I run seems fine. but I usually only surf the web and play EQ2.
  19. I keep running out of memory on my computer. I was wondering if there was an article on how to free up as much ram as possible. I start up Task Manager and it shows 21 processes running. Is there a way to disable these. It is a fresh install of XP Home. btw... my crashes come from my games. I thought it was my built-in video, but I bought a x1300pro and it runs much better, but still runs out of memory. I also manually set my page file to 2048mb, and I have 768mb ram(512mb+256mb) on a sempron 2500+. I even turned off system restore. my startup file is empty.
  20. sorry if this has been answered already, but couldn't find it in search. I recently installed win pro from unattend CD I made awhile back. upon bootup it asked me for a password for Administaror account, so I put in my passward and logged in to window. I then installed all my programs I use regularly. then I created a new user and then my problems started. first I created my main account and was asked to be admin only, even though I had a Administration account that was created at install. so I finished creating it as Admin and when sent back to the user accounts page I noticed that my Administration account said it was created only if no user accounts existed. then I went and renamed my new account to Admin thinking I would lose Administration (and I did) and then created my normal user account (Limited). then I rebooted to my limited account and I didn't have access to a lor of my files. I forgot to reassign them in admin, so I rebooted and logged into admin and to my suprise, no access to my files I created under administrator? so my question is, is there an easy wayto get my files back? I don't want to reinstall everything again. -=Mark=-
  21. Problem fixed. It turns out Adelphia and most other cable ISPs block port 80. had to go into Apache and tell it to use port 801 instead and told the router to forward port 801 , and I also told the firewall to allow port 801 through and all works fine. -=Mark=-
  22. I can't seem to access my Apache web server from the internet, but I can from my LAN and localhost. I have a D-Link DI-514 wireless-b router and 3 computers on the lan. The server with apache on it (192.168.0.102) The router with IP of (69.169.#.#) I set the router to DMZ the 192.168.0.102 as I didn't see port forwarding as an option. I turned off firewall completely. I can http:/192.168.0.102 from any machine and get the Apache server test page. I set apache to use 69.169.#.#:80 as server name in httpd.conf I get on machine #3 and disable the nic card and use dial-up to call the server and it comes up page cannot be displayed. at http://69.169.#.# I've had several other people try to get on and they also get same error. can someone please help. I've searched the internet for 2 days now and find people with the same problem and no one seems to have an answer. although a few people said they figured it out but didn't tell how. I have Apache 2.0.52 Router is D-Link DI-514 Windows XP Pro SP2 Adelphia Cable serve with D-Link DCM-200 cable modem. I also have installed Fedora Core 2 - Linux with same problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -=Mark=-
  23. http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/office2003_advanced.htm Sorry for that. Yes, I understood that part of it. but i wasn't using the setup.exe in administrative mode. I was refering to the next 2 sentences after that, the part about skipping to section 3. But it won't accept anything in section 3 either. which was the only section I used. Thanks -=Mark=-
  24. Run this CMD manually and see if you get an error reported. Make sure paths are correct. Let me know the result. OK, here's how it went down: 1st. I ran the batch file manually from windows after adding the pause command and same thing, nothing. 2nd. I tried to remove the - at the end of the setup install file. so it read /qb instaed of /qb- and it said invalid product key. I knew that wasn't the problem as I've made half a dozen or so .MST files, so I reran the custom installation wizard again and triple check the product code and reburnned the DVD. good thing I went down and bouight a 5 pack of DVD+RW . 3rd. reboot and same thing as I expected, nothing. modified the batch file again with pause and removed the minus sign and manually ran batch file from window. this time it said I couldn't run in silent mode on retail version? I double checked the help file and sure enough it said I could run it in retail mode, but my version didn't read the install file 4th. removed the /qb- completely and reran and got most of the way through the setup (the manual setup had all the fields entered for me, I just had to hit enter.) then just when it looked like it was going to start installing Office... BAM... retail versions doesn't support the custom installation wizard error message. someone might want to update the advanced unattended install help file for office 2003 pro. or someone with a retail version test it on their setup and verify if it works for them. I guess I will try the simple install next. wish me luck -=Mark=-
  25. ok, I just did the RunOnceEx.cmd method and cmdow comes up and it goes to the office install and then stops for about 2-3 secs then continues on with out installing. I even went to my install directory and double clicked on my OP2003.bat file and I saw it execute it just fine, it just didn't install anything or give any errors of any kind. I've ran the custon install wiz several times thinking I misconfiged something? but I didn't change anything except the entering product key and the EULA. here's my RunOnceEx.cmd file: cmdow @ /HID @echo off SET KEY=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx REG ADD %KEY% /V TITLE /D "Installing Applications" /f REG ADD %KEY%\005 /VE /D "Office 2003 Pro" /f REG ADD %KEY%\005 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\install\Apps\OP2003\setup.exe TRANSFORMS=%systemdrive%\install\APPS\OP2003\Unattended.MST /qb-" /f EXIT let me know if it looks OK or not? -=Mark=-
