  1. I've been having compatiblility issues with Vista x64 lately and decided to install my two older 36gb raptors to install XP Pro to run my other programs. After installing the drives I reboot to vista to format them and get them ready for the install process. but low and behold my Vista won't boot up. it gets to the scrolling progress bar of it starting up and it never progresses past that and the bar just keeps scrolling forever. I figure no problem, I probably bumped the SATA connector loose(I wish they would make a better and studier SATA connector that clips on instead of just pushing on and praying gravity is enough to hold it on.) I restart with the same result. I then look at it better and see t is kind of wabbly and decide to put my new silverstone SATA connector on and grab my flashlight to see better. I then push on the old SATA connector to examine how loose it is and ZAP! A static discharge. The drive is so close to my video card(about 1/4 inch and runs into the PCIe connector wires) and it arced out on the PCIe power connector solder joints of the video card. I reboot and sure enough, no video. I pull out my backup eVGA 7800GTX and disconnect the Vista drives then start to install XP Pro on my old 36GB Raptors and order me a new eVGA 8800GT 512mb card while patiently waiting. after XP Pro is installed updated I hook up my Vista drives again and it just won't boot at all, not even to the progress bar. I switch back to boot from the XP drives and it starts a scan on my Vista drives and finds an error but doesn't report anything other than it fixed something. I then have it boot into vista and hope it works, it gets past the scrolling bars and then the screen goes blank for a longer than usual time and then I see the cursor and then remmeber I have switched video cards and it needs to update the drivers. unfortunately it just sits at the blank screen forever, but the mouse cursor works fine, it just won't progress on the boot. I figure at this point it must be a driver conflict since I had an 8800GTS before I blew it up. so I whip out the Vista DVD and boot up to try and repair and it says the startup portion is fine, I try system restore, but forgot I turned it off. none of the other options seemed to help me either. If anyone can help me recover this I'd be forever greatful. I have this XP drive I could use if I need to work from here to recover, or I can install Vista on this RAID to recover the Vista on the other RAID. -=Mark=-
  2. I was wondering what a good TV card for Vista x64? I have Beyond TV 4, but not sure if it works with x64. I also have an Audigy 2 ZS, but again, not sure if it'll work fully for x64. any recommendations would be great, hopefully from people having a system already up and running. -=Mark=-
  3. you're a genius! I remembered I still had my USB stick in, so I powered down and removed it. Restarted and looked up ReadyBoost and how to disable it. it also listed other services to disabled and after reading them through decided to disable a few more things. Then I couldn't remember the superfetch name and decided to test the changes I made already before checking this message again. it seemed to help a little bit, but it was still grinding pretty good. I then looked up superfetch and disabled it and rebooted and it is now quite for once. Woot!!!! Thanks once again for all your help and patience with me. -=Mark=- p.s. what exactlty does superfetch do? I just thought it was another name for readyboost and worked with the usb sticks. The services.msc just said something like it makes windows run faster - lol

  6. I ran spybot 1.5 and it found a few things, then Defender and nothing there, then avast and nothing there. I rebooted and the grinding continues. I decide to boot into safe mode and see what happens and it found nothing more. 8. ok, I have this annoying problem also, but my dad has it worse than me. he has a P4 with HT and it is insanely slow. I have system restore already turned off. I went to admin tools and turned off windows search and it still runs anyway. it acts like it stops, then seems to start back up again after everything is loaded at startup. I even used services.msc from dos and it says it's already disabled. I also get this annoying popup saying one of my services has been turned off. When I click it on it brings up windows defender, but it doesn't even list the process to allow me to either let it run or disable it permantly. anyone know of a sure fire way to disable the searchindexer.exe file? I then went and bought an sata drive and dug out my old pci sata controller card and it is running smooth once again. Thanks again for all your help. -=Mark=-
  10. some of my problems are: It takes like 5 minutes to get to the desktop when I fire up My Computer it shows a flashlight symbol indicating it is waiting for the device. usual only a few seconds wait. but I never get the flashlight on any of my other systems. actually, starting any programs take a little longer to start and can take a minute or more to fire up. my other slower computer takes about half the time on average. Also, shut-down takes a couple minutes while it would normally take 30-45 seconds. also, clicking the Windows start button can take a second or two to show up, and the sub-munes within also can take a second or two to show up. and it is the same with any other program run. Hard drive access is fairly constant and seems to access for an unusually long time, which was what made me think virus. Comodo's firewall status shield is always at idle when I'm not on-line so it doesn't seem to be an on-line issue. just a Windows issue apparently. My problem system is a 1.5ghz AMD Semperon +2200, 256MB RAM, 20GB ATA 133 HD, and an HP all-in-one photo printer. My slower system is a Dell 2350 with a 1.8Ghz Celeron with a 20GB ATA 100 HD, 384MB RAM, and same printer. They both have a fairly fresh install of Windows XP Home (Last 60 Days) Thanks for the help everyone -=Mark=- ps. I was mistaken on the system getting slower the longer I'm on, it think it is more like the longer it's on the more things are running from opening several windows at the same time. Normally Office apps, Browser windows, and "My Computer" screens.
  11. OK, I removed the Network Magic and took the Office and Quickbooks files out of the startup folder, but things are slow as ever. My internet and network seem to run fine and are not slow. it is Windows that is slow. I think it was around the time I installed Quickbooks. I remember it installing .Net 1.1. Will the .net file put a large load on windows? My other slower system runs fine and has the same files on it, except there is no Quickbooks or .Net 1.1. My hard drive sure does get a workout and thought maybe it was running low on memory and using the page file a lot. I pulled a stick out of my slower machine and doubled my RAM to 512MB total. but that didn't help. well, maybe slightly. not enough to really notice. I also defragged my drive and scandisk it with no error and no real improvement. I'm not sure what else I can do. It sure seems Like I have a virus running in the background chewing up my process time. Thanks for your help -=Mark=-
  12. Thanks a bunch Tarun. I do have Cable nternet connection. Comcast I have a D-Link router. Not sure of the model, but is a Wireless G and brand new. I only installed Network Magic as it came with the router and foolishly thought it'd speed it up. I will definately remove it. I ran Windows Update after running HighJackThis and update to IE7, even though I use Firefox/Firetune with Thunderbird. as for my office and QB files, I can remove them without issues. I normally do my own updates anyway.
  13. Thanks for the info KillerB. I had already did the remedy you suggested. I have an old Promise software RAID controller card (PCI) and hooked up my fourth drive to it and used Ghost to make an image. actually, I used drive copy and it worked awesome. I then booted into the Promise controller and all was good. I then hooked my my 3rd drive from the Intel chipset to my Promise controller and to my surprise it read both drives fine. I then just pulled out the Promise controller and drive 3 and 4 and just left it with drive 1 and 2 on the on-board RAID 0. I at least have the third drive in the machine, but not hooked up, in case I need an emergency fix. -=Mark=- ps, Is this all or none only with the Intel boards? or the 965 in general? I have had most all systems use a single drive as a RAID option in case you have multiple disks. of course this is my first Intel board in a long time as I've usually run AMD boards for the past 5 or so years.
  14. I just booted up my system last night and it said updates were ready to install. I look and there are 3 Office updates waiting, I install them and they won't install. is anyone else having this problem? KB940602 - Security update for Excel 2003 KB936048 - Security update for Office 2003 KB936643 - Update for Outlook junk email filter 2003 could I maybe have a virus or something? everything checks out OK. I also remember my XP x64 machine had a security update that wouldn't install for Adobe reader. it let me hide it, but now it doesn't. The same with these updates, it won't let me hide them. TIA -=Mark=-
  15. Oh no, please don't tell me I need to reinstall windows yet again. I've been searching all day and can't find anything anywhere. I was hoping someone here knew a trick or two. Thanks anyway -=Mark=-
  16. I am having freqent lag, the longer I'm on the worse it gets. I defragmented my hard drives and it seemed to help a little. anyway, I installed all the Malware programs with nothing found and made the Highjackthis log file. hope someone can make sense of this. 17. OK, my new dilemma. I removed my hardware RAID card on my DFI Infinity P965-S as it kicks down my second PCIe x16 slot to x4 speeds, which is where my RAID card is located. I left my two drives in and made them a RAID 0. Plus, I already have a 3rd Hard drive for emergency use that also has XP installed. My problem now, is that I hooked up those 2 drives to my motherboard to use the ICH8R RAID mode and the chipset turns RAID on all of my drives and my third single drive is being treated as a RAID even though it is not in any kind of a RAID. Next I try my XP CD and F6'd my RAID drivers and go to repair mode and try a Fixboot and FixMBR in hopes that it would put in my RAID drivers. That didn't work. Then I try installing my RAID drivers on my current boot after I turn off RAID to get it to boot, and then RAID drivers won't install drivers if it doesn't detect a RAID. so, is there a way to force my RAID drivers into XP without a reinstall? or is there a trick to get my single drive to not act like a RAID drive. The RAID menu says it's a Non-Member Disk, and if I try to make it a RAID it wants 2 disks, so I can't do that. Thanks for any help -=Mark=-
  18. sorry if this has been asked before. but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I have MCE 2005. It comes with 2 install CDs and a third 2005 update cd. I have never installed the 2005 cd before as it wants the .net 1.1 installed and I never used it before, but now a couple programs I use what it installed. this last reinstall of MCE 2005 I decided to go ahead and install the 2005 cd. I boot it up and it says there is a specify MCE 2005 update available. I then fire up Media Center and see no difference. I rarely use the Media Center much, but what exactly does MCE 2005 give you that 2002 doesn't? -=Mark=-
  19. woot!! that was sure a fast response. I'll let you know tomorrow how things go. Thanks again -=Mark=- Sweet, it worked like a charm. well for a few minutes anyway. then it cut back out. it seems my router went bad. but only the wireless part. bought a new router and all is 100% again. Thanks once again for the help. -=Mark=-
  20. woot!! that was sure a fast response. I'll let you know tomorrow how things go. Thanks again -=Mark=-
  21. ah, this could be my problem, but how do I go about turning the NLA back on? TIA -=Mark=-
  22. It seems I have a similar issue here. but I don't know how to change those address from ipconfig. Ipconfig seems to only let me view them. I'm not at the problem computer until tomorrow, but I would like to know how to set those ipconfig settings manually if someone can point me in the right direction. TIA -=Mark=-
  23. all I have to say is WOW! I not only get one awesome sig, but two. Now I can have a sig for the computer forums and one for all the other forums I visit. Thank you very much guys. you are the greatest! -=Mark=-
  24. I just found out this feature. I have seen it many places, but I never knew how to make one myself. then I was told if I ask nicely I may have one made by the wonderful members of MSFN. so I'm asking nicely, can someone please make me a sig? hehe -=Mark=- ps, after looking at other's request I'd thought maybe I'd give you an idea what I like. all I need is my sig from bottom of this message and a fancy looking background with lots of color. kind of like those psychedelic looking pictures or outer space galaxy type pictures.
  25. I have installed Vista recently and I have already installed Avast, but was wonder if there are other malware/security programs available yet. hopefully there is something similar to the sticky guide,"Introduction To Anti-Malware & Cleaning" I really love that guide and use it all the time especially when setting up family's and friend's computers. Thanks in advance -=Mark=-
