[Problem] Install Windows XP from USB-Stick
jaclaz replied to DomIII's topic in Install Windows from USB
Get a decent program to show your partition table. Partition editors: Beeblebrox: http://students.cs.byu.edu/~codyb/ or PTEDIT32: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...es/PTEDIT32.zip Partition viewers: PartinfoNT ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...es/PartInNT.zip Partinfo (DOS): ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...es/partinfo.zip Or some other utility, like: MBRWIZ: http://mbrwizard.com/ or MBRFIX: http://www.sysint.no/nedlasting/mbrfix.htm Not always "C:" is active partition. jaclaz -

[Problem] Install Windows XP from USB-Stick
jaclaz replied to DomIII's topic in Install Windows from USB
well, which one is Active? i.e. has "80" in the partition table boot byte? jaclaz -
Here: http://flyakite.msfn.org/ I guess you mean a multi-boot single disk, not a multi-disk... jaclaz

Which brings us to a fork, either: a. you are a Geek squad member, you are authorized to use the software and you know (supposedly ) how to use and burn it b. you are not a Geek squad member and the MRI should be considered WAREZ If you look hard enough, you should see something like this: (see Rule #1): http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18408 jaclaz

Telling us what the burned CD contains, HOW you burned it and some spec's on "wife's PC" (like OS running, CD drive make/model, approximate year of build) might be useful.... ....for all we know wife's PC could be a 1992 IBM PS/2 with external Mitsumi CDROM (1x) running OS/2 WARP..... jaclaz

PXE Bootable usb network adapter
jaclaz replied to KingAFW's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I just happened to found two links in Italy, but this probably happens because of my Google prefs. I haven't dealed with any of them, but from experience, items on Shops on e-bay are generally (besides being cheaper) often delivered by mail quickly, though I cannot swear that the item is exactly the same. Why don't you try writing an e-mail to both those shops? Mails: http://www.telcominstrument.com/index.php info-AT-telcominstrument.com http://stores.ebay.it/SAM-trading-ms_Infor...8QQftidZ2QQtZkm new.seller-AT-yahoo.it Maybe you could check some electronic online shop in Norway, to see if they have anything like that. Problem with most of these thingies is that they are advertised/re-sold without mentioning producer part N. or producer at all, and often finding it is simmply impossible, although they are there. This is another one: http://www.pittjug.org/catalog/earphone_an...20_lan_127.html (but they seem more a wholesales than a shop) jaclaz -

Thanks for trusting me . @bluemm In your particular case, do not forget to read BEFORE ANYTHING else the FAQ's: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=116766 and expecially FAQ#2, you may need to re-create your nlited CD if you removed "Manual Install"... jaclaz -
PXE Bootable usb network adapter
jaclaz replied to KingAFW's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
From the reports I have seen, it seems like some USB hubs are not "liked" by some BIOSes...actually whenever a given stick boots on a number of machines and fails on another, the culprit is generally a "picky" BIOS. Since most recent computers have more than one USB ports free, it is advisable to use them directly instead of using a hub, the problem with two devices would be that of having two network connections on the same place or needing to unplug and re-plug the network cable after having performed the PXE boot. However, until you cannot get your hands on one on those thingies and experiment, I guess it's just "academic talking" jaclaz -
PXE Bootable usb network adapter
jaclaz replied to KingAFW's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hmmm, I may be wrong, but I would define that as an all new look to the sentence "looking for trouble" Usually booting from USB with a hub gives problems. I was thinking more about a hub (or a passive splitter of some kind ) on the "ethernet" side. jaclaz -
Hint: On the top right, when viewing the board, press the "Oprtions" button and choose ( Switch to: ) "Standard": jaclaz

NO. Not because I'm particularly unhelpful but because there is no "need" to install on hard disk first and then copy to USB stick. Still I have not clear what you are attempting to do. Choose one: 1) Install FROM USB stick 2) Install TO USB stick 3) Install TO "Generic" SDCard 4) Install TO eeePC internal drive 1) and 4) can be made with the linked apps in the Install XP from USB http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=157 2) and 3) can be made with the referenced guides or with the usboot.org program (for USB sticks) None of this need an install on hard disk - only SOME of Dietmar's Tutorials needed installing and copying the system, whilst some install directly to USB,check them in Dietmar's signature: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14181 jaclaz

...and of course the "rip off": http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installin...-usb-thumb.html which appears to be a rip-off of a rip-off : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...1384&st=476 http://www.digwin.com/view/installing-wind...usb-flash-drive uses an OLDish version of the files, a few bugs have been fixed and some new features added, besides two different ways, one to use a PE to install and another which is a GUI version, you'd better start with latest files: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=111406 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=121446 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120444 The other howto: http://www.3eportal.com/index.php?option=c...14&Itemid=9 uses a different utility: XP3eSD, which is meant to INSTALL TO SDCARD, not FROM, and it's based on this: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1433 which is based on this: http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 which derives from the original thread by Dietmar (with minor contributions from yours truly ): http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14181 If you want to install XP TO a USB drive or stick, you may want to try the mentioned tutorials or the automated way: http://www.usboot.org/tiki-index.php jaclaz

Yes, it will. The problem might come with some of (unfortunately very common) drivers that use the same driver filename for different drivers. The "usual" easiest way is to use BTS Driverpacks: http://downloads.littlbuger.info/index.php?dlid=915 http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/DriverPack.php?pag=b jaclaz

There seem to several of them: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895962/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902274/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314634/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900/en-us It seems like this missing "DisableSelectiveSuspend" creates more damages than a Tornado. PXE Bootable usb network adapter
jaclaz replied to KingAFW's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
@derniwi Just for the record, that driver is a very old version. Latest should be this one: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=126444 http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DTC A "reference" USB drivers diskette is this one: http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/usbdrv.html @KingAFW There used to be an USB network thingy (not PXE enabled): http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=4743 http://www.spacetools.com/tools4/space/445.htm but CATC has been incorporated or whatever by LeCroy: http://www.lecroy.com/catc/ and it seems like they abandoned this line of products. What if you use two USB devices, one for PXE and one for networking and a Network hub? Pretty much complex... But these USB thingies have drivers for DOS: http://www.topmay-computer.com/products/De...158&MaxID=3 and they appear to be prolly cheap: http://www.telcominstrument.com/p_302_27_6...n-ethernet.html http://cgi.ebay.it/SCHEDA-DI-RETE-ADATTATO...1742.m153.l1262 They seem to be pretty much low-level, and they do have: which should mean that it could be possible to "burn" some PXE code such as Etherboot: http://etherboot.org/wiki/index.php to it's ROM. Given the cost of the thingy, it may be worth a try. I'll check too if I can find something else like that.... jaclaz -
No, it's not easily done, but you may want to try grub4dos and "Virtual" floppy images: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20543 This way you can choose among a number of floppy images. If you use gzip compressed images or (using memdisk) .zip compressed ones, a floppy image will be really small, and several will fit on the single floppy. This way is also easy to add a new driver or "mantain" the collection of drivers. jaclaz

PXE Bootable usb network adapter
jaclaz replied to KingAFW's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I am not sure to understand the question. There are USB network adapters that support PXE (DOS does not matter in PXE booting): http://www.argontechnology.com/products.as...103&pid=162 The problem is whether there is any (PXE does not matter in network access) DOS USB driver for network? I don't think so. jaclaz -
No joy yet (version dated 30/11/2008). regorderdrv All drive letters: C D E F G H I J K L M N O Mounted drive letters: C D I J K L M N E G H O F Internal hard disk 1 drive letter: C Usb hard disk 1 drive letters: D Usb hard disk 2 drive letters: E G H O Cd/dvd rom drive letters: I Remmovalbe drive letters: J K L M N F D: is second internal hard disk. E: G: H: O: are first (and only) USB HD. There is no distinction among the various Remmovalbe Removable drives: F: is a USB stick J: is Perisoft Virtual SCSI disk K: L: M: N: are USB Card Reader Combo. You "changed the rules" of the game, however. The point was - at least in my mind - to use no external utility, otherwise most of the fun would be lost. It will take me some time to check the batch code, will let you know If I find where the problem might be.... Cheers, jaclaz

Good question, that deserves a good answer : Seriously, anything that is showed as a warning or as an error, a typical logged event that could be related is something like "parity error" or "controller error" on device.... for example you get this kind of error if you have a bad ATA cable (or use a 40 leads one instead of a 80 leads one on a ATA 5, 6 or 7 drive): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Tech...2C_and_features Maybe, just maybe you have something similar... jaclaz

Most probably there is some form of "wrong" entry in the Registry. It is very difficult to fix them or give assistance for these kind of problems from a distance. It is possible, as said that a "wrong" driver or a "wrong" Filter driver causes the issue, or even a Policy, but it's strange that reinstalling Windows alltogether (a rather "extreme" solution, BTW) didn't change things. Usually removing EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING "USB related", including internal hub and bridges drivers and reinstalling them fixes the problem. Is the behaviour the same WHATEVER port you connect to? Usually ports "on the back" i.e. those physically soldered to the motherboard behave "better" than "front" ones (connected to MB by a cable). Also, visually checking solderings of the connectors and cleaning the connector blades with alcohol or a similar cleaning solvent might help....
