You dont need admin rights to share, you can share if you created the folder or a member of a group that has been given permission to share such as the power users. Have you tried creating a new folder and then sharing it??

Hi, I have had this may times, each time i open dos and use the del command and the path to the file to delete it! Just as Hansen suggested at the beginning of this discussion. If your not sure of the path to type in when deleting in dos, just go into windows and open the properties for the file you wish to delete....there you shall see the path to enlightenment. CB

difference between ERD, Recovery Console, and Boot
Curv Boll replied to Alexei's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hi there, ERD....should be used to at first create a list of how your current boot sequence and mft. then when you have a problem booting up or locating a partition you can use this disk to replace anything like boot files that have corrupt or missing. Recovery console can also be used to do this but requires further knowledge on your part. Recovery console can be used to repair a corrupt registry or add any system file. Boot disk is just a disk to boot the machine from which as you guessed it, contains the boot files. Basically ERD or Recovery console can be used for the same type of tasks however the recovery console can do a lot more since there is room for so many commands. Hope this helps -
hi, You can audit printing events through windows auditing i believe. You need to enable auditing for the print server machine and then in the advanced propertiesof the logical printer you set whichever auditing events you want. C.B

I am doing this from memory as i cant test it here, you can go into control panel and network connections, there should be a link to network places in there and im almost sure you can drag that to the desktop. This creates a shortcut to network places. Or I think you can right click start menu and choose properties, from the advanced tab i think you can choose to add network places to the start menu. good luck C.B

Glad to hear it, considering its free, vnc really is something... do you find it faster than remote d?? C.B

Te details regarding setup and ports can be found on the web site
-
Thanks Phyridean, VNC does have different ports, 5800 if i remember correctly. Im not sure what security issues you had Phyridean but all data across the wire with vnc is supposed to be encrypted and as long as the ports are tied down i would have thought it plenty safe to use. Each to own opinion though Later C.B

Hello, hope some1 can help, i am still on super slow dial up and have several email accounts, some for junk and some for real. In the junk accounts i often cant download all the mail and get errors simply because of the amount and size of the emails in there. So i telnet into the account and remove the large emails. then i can download the rest without problem. My question is though......is there a telnet command that allows me to flush the account and totally delete everything? Or do i need another app to do this?? any help, much appreciated C.B

Hi Folks, I know this is not the answer you were looking for but remote desktop is about as half as good as virtual network computing (vnc)! VNC is tiny and can be run from a floppy disk, i have never experienced any drag with it unlike reeemmmoooote desktop. Its free and is one of the best apps i have. get it here... www.realvnc.com C.B

Hi There, I was reading down your post and replies looking for the mention of the easiest fix. Tomcat nailed it........download hijackthis and cw shredder and your more or less done. If users had to point out the answer they accepted you should choose tomcats answer. good luck C.B

I found it odd but i once installed mdeaon toolz for mounting images. i usually use alchol 120% but on this occasion i installed the above. I found that windows update failed because one of the files used by update was being used by mdeamon tools. I had to uninstasll mdeaon tools and win update worked again. C.B

Hi there, windows update will always download updates and put in the supplied folder because the commands that run the update.exe specify that the update.exe must be run from that folder. To do what you want with windows xp you should download the network installation of service pack1, and then 2 when it comes out soon. There is also an xp rollup which is an accumulation of all critical updates since the last service pack. So.... 1. download and install sp1 network install, you may need to use the -x to extract if you are determined not to have the update folders on that drive. If you use the -x to extract the files from the download you will need to specify a destination for the extracted files. Then go to start > run> and type the path to the extracted update.exe and use the /s switch to slip the files into the chosen destination, which should be the systemroot folder. 2. Then download the windows rollup Do exactly ther same thing with this. as you did for the service pack 1. You now have a fully updated partition without any windows update folders and without installing windows update software. Sadly though, this does not delete the update folders already there. I have not checked but you might want to look the name of the folder up in the registry and delete it there. This might allow you to delete the folder in windows afterwards but this is just a guess. good luck C.B

EXE Files Don't Run From Explorer or Desktop
Curv Boll replied to th3politician's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hi there, I was recently asked to look at someones comp. It had exactly the same problem except that it was xp home. Since no exe files would run there was not a lot i could do to resolve the problem without formatting however, i did manage to run "HijackThis" which supplied a log file of everything which was running on that machine, its a tiny application that does not need to be installed and produces a log file in less than a second. Ideal for this situation. I took the log file home and there in front of me was one very infected pc. There was loads of spyware on there, and i found 2 virus and 1 worm..sasser. I am blaming the worm for the exe problem since its old hat for worms to corrupt exe files but i cant be sure. When i went back to my freinds house a few days later i could no longer run hijackthis which is a shame as that was required as the starting point to a fix. Without being able to run that i had no choice but to reinstall. If this is your choice, you might like the unattended install guide found here which i have recently used and found to be a great guide. www.unattended.msfn.org You will ofcourse need a second pc to work on if you choose to correct your problem by using this guide, otherwise you will have to do a manual install. You asked "what we think your problem is"? I think your machine is covered in nasties!! Good luck it's times like these that i just love images. C.B -
Hi Folks, I find bitdefender pro 7.2 to be awesome. It will even work fine on my 2k3 domain controller. The updates are fast. I am interested to know more about Norman av though. And who made the selection list where we vote??? terrible selection which looks like it was designed to make norton look good. later C.B
