Ok ....MS$ once again decides to write their own standard into their OS's What puzzles me, Hard Drive manufactures came up with their own standard years ago to securely wipe a hard drive and nobody uses it ? Maybe because it was considered a destructive wipe before trashing the hard drive? Bugs me, they do this stuff and then years later, it's like, " oh yeah did we forget to tell you?" Jake

Just for what it's worth.....I'm set'n here using a 98se box because it's fun...I flat out enjoy it. It doesn't try to 2nd guess my every move, it doesn't plead with me to phone home everytime I plug some piece of hardware in. It's been here connected thru a dsl line behind a Netgear router for 2 1/2 years without a single virus. I use it for a mini ftp server when working on machines for friends, using a progam called babyftp. I have a laptop here that came with Xp Pro, and I use it when I wanna set on the couch to do some research, but somehow, I'm always coming back to this machine to get any serious work done. Maybe it's because I cut my teeth on Dos, who knows.... and as far as innovation, to my way of thinking, Windows 95 layering a 32 bit OS overtop of a 16 bit machine was true innovation. I still remember trying to get my brain wrapped around the idea of protected mode drivers... Anyway, something tells me there will always be a 98se box active around her somewhere. Jake

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
triger49 replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Here is one I wish I would have had about 6 months ago.... "Killbox" Was mentioned else-where, but still developed and still supports 9x. From the website ... KillBox is a tool to delete in-use files, if the file is running, KillBox will attempt to end the process (close the running file) and delete it. And alot more, such as unregsrv a dll before delete....backup folder....nuke on boot...etc http://killbox.net/ Tested on my 98se and ME machines ...works great! Jake -

Hi ... Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings.... Those Toshiba drivers are not freeware, only work on toshiba products and expire after 60 days ....just went thru that. There are bluetooth drivers out there for Win 9x, Broadcom, Dlink, Startech....etc. What you need to find out is what chipset is being used. HTH Jake

Thank you very much for all your help....got sidetracked here, good friend walks in with 3 month old laptop ....last count I got was over 100 infected files (still counting)....but I will get back to the reason for this topic... Jake

Got this utlity I use everyday called "Wamonitor" .....works great, but the help file was written in Japanese, checked a couple online translation services....they come with this 500 word limit on free service. When my system tried to go to Microsft for the language files...got this "server not available" nonsense...... The author's web page has vanished.... Somebody give me a clue? Thanks Jake

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
triger49 replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
My wife has a recipe archive that would rival any public library, so I hunted for months for a decent recipe manager! Finally, after being disappointed over a whole bunch, I came across this one....freeware PieceofCake System requirements: Windows 95 or later (95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista). 15 MB available space on hard disk. http://www.pieceofcake.ws/ Jake -
Yo Tihiy, Just wanted to encourage you on this project......I have been toying with this for awhile now. I am noticing reduction in resource usage in programs that are normally real resource hogs....depending on what else is running, I have one program that simultaneously opens about 20 jet databases and It can range from 2% to 5% more available resources....I really did not expect this. Thanks for all your hard work .... Jake
-
This is soooo cool ...thanks

If you have RP9 less than 9.1.0 or UberSkin, install latest GDI and USER versions: Tihiy ....Thanks ....somehow I thought I did that ....but I had not..... Worked like a swiss watch.... Jake

Can somebody help me out here? I was sure I read on here somewhere what to do when Kernelex 4.2 obliterated the skin on the systray...?? did I really read about a fix or just dream it? It not a major issue, just kind of like washing and waxing your car, drive a block and have a bird do a number on the windshield.... Thanks Jake

Of course people are interested!Lack of response does not indicate lack of interest. . Thank you for the tool name. I'll have to check it out and add it to my arsenal. Thanks ...you know, until this, I would have probably given 2 to 1 odds this machine was malware clean.... Here is a file list ........ system32\lowsec\local.ds system32\lowsec\user.ds system32\lowsec\user.ds.lll system32\sdra64.exe system32\drivers\str.sys system32\drivers\ezvoiefzihcsvt.sys F-secure blacklight took care of everything except Sdra64.exe and folder lowsec. They reappeared..... Mcafee rootkit detective handled the rest by doing a nuke on boot. Now the really strange part, took a trip back over to Bitdefender's online scan. The second scan revealed copies of the above files all thru system restore points under MSN and Real toolbar and was able to remove them. Sdra64 is a really scurvy piece of Malware....it does keyboard logging, and can replicate registry entrys in seconds. Download links ..... http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/s...ces/blacklight/ http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/rkstinger.aspx Jake

Just for what it's worth ..... After digging around for days....was set'n here trying to decide about a clean install.....came across this tool I had downloaded several months ago...(one of those "dark and stormy night-save my bacon tools") FSecure Blacklight.....wonder of wonders, it found 6 files that a whole bunch of others missed...did a clean and rename....bingo, boots everytime. Also, looks they came from MSN messenger....gonna do a google trace on the file names...if anybody is interested, I'll post back with the results....... Jake

I been using this for about 6 months now....incredibly stable...not the worlds fastest scanning engine ...but like 3% of system resources and non-mapi mail monitoring.....60+ megs .....(the price is right) http://www.freerav.com/ Jake

This machine is an HP a614n ....512 meg ram .... 2.6ghz P4 XP Home sp3. Long story short, this came to me with a year's worth of neglect....almost 2 gig of crap files.....etc etc. Spent several hours, cleaning up, updated video drivers and Directx, latest bios flash. Thing ran like a swiss watch for about 3 days. Just before I was ready to return it , I turned auto update back on. Ouch ... Auto update did it's thing for several minutes and froze. Power off, endless reboots. Turn off auto reboot produces this error / bsod 0x0000008e (0xc0000005 0xeee508d3 0xf8a38968 0x00000000 ) After hours of tracing my steps, checking for trojans, I reinstalled Service pack 3 from safe mode...it booted and seemed normal so I created a restore point. Next reboot it goes back to the endless reboots.....I can however, always boot to that restore point and it will run with no problems. From what I have been able to gather, it is a driver issue....can somebody give me a clue? TIA Jake

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
triger49 replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Here's a really elegant address book solution...still developed...still supports 9x... http://users.belgacom.net/rgs/ Rgs-cardmaster... (download link tagged "mirror" always has latest ver. ...freeware) Jake (sorry if this has been mentioned...search did not show any results) -
Question ...happened upon a post by "Petr" with a link to a utility called "SetK6". To make a long story short, after following the directions I noticed a marked improvement in over all system response. (Sustained disk xfer rate jumped from 60 meg/sec to 69 meg/ sec among others). Trouble is, the settings are lost after power down. It occur's to me that Windows 98se should know how to initialize a processor. But obviously that is not the case. My queston is, is it a bios issue or a driver issue? .....I mean I can always call the util from autoexec.bat! Jake

"Log Me In-free" remote access software version Win98
triger49 replied to Urge's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Permit me to make a suggestion.... If your need for "Log me in" is not set in stone.....give tightvnc a try...been using it for several months.....so easy to use ......unzip it, copy the files and go.... http://www.tightvnc.com/ Jake -
Man ...just had to speak up ... Tihiy....these little power toys are the greatest thing since cornflakes....Thanks for sharing ,, I often wonder what else you got stashed away there that i haven't seen yet....being a relative newbie here... Jake

Non-taken....I had a similiar reaction when I first installed it.....sat here and wondered what the developer was thinking?? Several times it seems to have blocked Win98 shutdown. I just flattened it with a clean opsys restore (in my setup this takes less than 10 minutes). Your right, it locked my system twice when I was trying to clean out cache folders (too bad it did not happen before I posted the link...sigh).....point of it was, this type system monitoring is out there for 98 / me .....just haven't found it yet. It makes one other point....Several tech types have tryed to tell me you can't do what that program does on 98.... the search continues...... Jake

Had to think twice before I posted this....but the crazy thing works, ......Rubber Ducky....shows activity even on drives on my pci-ide card....hardly what I had in mind tho..... Get it here.... it is freeware Jake

Somebody enlighten me here, Please! ....somewhere I seem to remember a fix for Directx not updating the System File Checker database.....may seem like a trivial matter.....but not for the guy that owns this Laptop... Thx Jake
