  1. For what it's worth... Checked the time/ date stamps on the suspect folders mentioned in this thread. Then compared them with my Total uninstall logs. Seems I tryed an Email client called Mulberry., and the installation time / date corresponds exactly. Looks like somebody is using a rendering engine that creates those folders, which could be IE6 . Jake
  2. Is there a utility which zeroes out Win98 and WinXP swapfiles, similar to sdelete, leaving zeroed out but functioning swapfiles? This could reduce the size of compressed disk/partition images containing swapfiles, besides deleting bad stuff, such as spyware or infected files. No idea whether a computer could get infected via the content of a swapfile. Hey Multibooter; Been thinking about you just hoping that adventure with tenga virus was not a result of your helping me with Email archive issues. But anyway, BCWipe will zero out a swap file. Windows will kick up a fuss about it...but it will do it. Another one I often use is Western Digitals DataLifeguard tools. If you have spare hard drive, you can use the copy utilty to mirror your current drive C: and it will ignore index.dat files and the swap file...leaving you with bootable mirror. The secret is, you have to be running the OS you wish to mirror. Another words, you can't mirror your win98 partition while running XP and have it bootable. I use this scheme sometimes when I want run Paragons backup/restore utilty to make an Iso image. Jake
  3. Right click MyComputer Properties>performance>virtualmemory The radio button should be ticked that says "let windows decide..blah blah blah" Which means the swap file is turned on. Jake Whoa, only answered part of your question... the actual file is "win386.swp" located in your windows directory. To see it you must have "show all files" checked in folder options.
  4. It is another one of the plethora of ways to monitor your activities. Mine, for instance, contains links to the last 2 videos I watched on CNN's website. Things like Crap Cleaner do a good job of getting most of them. It's always at the top of the list at filehippo dot com http://www.filehippo.com/ To assuage any paranoia, try the last freeware version of BCWipe, it not only wipes the dat files, but finds their location in the swap file and wipes that also. http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page14.html#BcWipe One note of caution, if you have your swap file turned off for any reason, it starts wiping the free space on drive C:\ which can take a long time. Jake
  5. Apparently the link I posted took a bandwidth hit and password protected all access .the files from Foxmail4u are also available on this french site. http://foxmail.free.fr/ Jake
  6. Just by way of update, I did experience some artifacting of Opera's Personal bar on occassion. That's the bad news. The Good news, since Opera 10.50 hit the streets it has never happened again, and their widget engine (Opera itself) now allows you to start and keep widgets on the desktop with out Opera being opened....incredibly with no noticable drain on system resources. Can't speak for anybody else, but this most recent release has been the most stable version to date for me. Jake
  7. I only saw box2fox "Tool, konvertiert Netscape Mailboxen zu FoxMail-Mailboxen", i.e. it converts from Netscape to Foxmail, which is probably not what you need. Actually, it does, I did, and it worked. Sorry about that, In my haste to fire off a quick reply, I did not fully explain that it is a 2-way utility. Fox to MBX or MBX to Fox. Found it documented at > http://hazeleger.net/psjs_faqs/index.html That guy use to provide European support for Foxmail till he discovered V 6.x was phoning home all the time and dropped it. I thought the whole website had vanished but it turned up on a google search. Anyway there is a section on migration tools in the FAQ. At that point I was able to do a simple test with Keynote Convert... http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote_addons.html For pure text emails, it's a thing of beauty. It also does batch text file import. Very interesting find, actually Aid4Mail v1.994 http://www.aid4mail.com/specifications.php It seems to be able to read Foxmail email. As output, however, it apparently can only create .EML message files, which contain embedded attachments http://filext.com/faq/decode_eml_files.php The RFC-822 files I got from my Eudora mailboxes with Emailchemy were plain .txt, without embedded attachments.Another suggestion turned up from a techy friend, which would add an alternative. http://luethje.eu/prog/index.htm MBX to EML and EML to MBX . I have not experimented yet to find how they handle attachments. They are command line utilities, and to the extent I have had time to tinker, they seem to work well...although real fussy about syntax. That stupid tail wagging dog would have been better suited to an XP Disney version. But anyway, still have some gray areas like attachments. that I need to sort out. I really want to take time and look closer at Emailchemy also. I knew of one guy who in working with the old Calypso client, finally ended up forwarding all his emails to himself as attachments, just to avoid the headaches of conversion. Jake
  8. Hey Multibooter; Wow, thanks man ...that is some detailed leg work you have done there. Sorry I was so slow responding here. Kinda got sidetracked on a repair job. but that is a subject for another topic! I'll just skim the highlites here till I have more time this evening to respond. Some really great idea's surfaced as i was reading your post. One In particular, seting up an imap server on my home server which I am currently building. I noted that Emailchemey has that built in. Quote "You are using Foxmail v5.8, which is not on the list of email file formats which Emailchemy can read; you may have to export your email files in a format which Emailchemy can read." /endquote There in was precisely where the quagmire was until I found this page... http://www.foxmail4u.de/dloads.html Unless your multilingual, which I am not, you'll need a google translation. But on that page is a download for a tiny utilty called "fox to Box" which did precisely what I needed. Also, you asked what shareware solutions I had discovered ... http://www.fookes.com/ A program called Mailbag assistant ...which I had tryed one time and it works as advertised....but 50 bucks is just not in the budget right now. I gotta get ready for a meeting now, but I'll get back here this evening and compare notes on some more details. But above all else ...thanks a million for the help. Jake
  9. Hi; While I was digging around looking for a solution, stumbled upon this little gem. Thought I would pass it along. So close to the traditional office desk with 3 letter trays and a filing cabinet, it's uncanny. Calendar and to-do list with ability to attach an email to an item in your to-do list. Light, fast and works well with my 98se. Breezemail; http://www.b2ltd.com/databaseplace/breezemail.htm I only tried the portable version so far. Jake
  10. Hi; Nice screen shot... It was one of those deals where I knew I was getting snowed, because the ability to make the back ground transparent on desktop Icon labels had been around since the days of Windows 95. I seem to remember some talk about WindowBlinds having some minor capabilities in that area also. But what caught my attention was Opera's popup when started that "msimg32.dll" from Windows ME was needed to make transparency function correctly. I saw that and asked myself what was built into Windows ME that I never knew about. Then when I found that addon for Opera 10 and the resulting great looking Opacity levels...Well, let's just say it grabbed my attention. Jake
  11. Hi, and welcome!! Just drop them in your "C:\windows\system" directory and reboot. Jake Sorry...must have been typing the same time I was
  12. Hi; Ever since the advent of the "Aero" desktop, I was always told that 98se Does not, Cannot support it. Well, along comes Opera ver 10:10. As I am rumaging thru their addon archive, buried about 10 pages deep is one to make the overlays on speed dial wallpaper transparent. Not only does it work, but quite eloquent. I realize it's not an earth shattering discovery, just seems like folks will tell you anything to bury Win9x. Jake
  13. Can not recall seeing where anybody else had tryed this; The latest release of "TotalText Container" loads and runs with Kex 4.5 /b2 ....Kinda like keynote on steroids. Using the 2000 /sp4 compatiblity option. This is the first time that any combination has worked at all for me, the only thing I am having trouble with is the spreadsheet section. http://sites.google.com/site/totaltextcontainer/ Jake Update / re-downloaded ...near as I can tell everything works, but it tough on system resources (like 32% worth) ..but definitely a cool application...
  14. Hey, Thanks folks! Jaclaz .. One of two things.... Either you have a bookmarks library that would rival most ISP's DNS records. >or< Your on a first name basis with the folks over at Google... Either way ...much obliged for the help. Jake
  15. Hi, Had this tower given to me with a TS-akt4/b Transcend Motherboard. Windows ME installed, but pretty much trashed. Seems Transcendusa has pulled down any and all info about their motherboards (unless I'm missing something). Was wondering if anybody knows if that info was moved someplace or it just vanished. Of particular interest to me was bios infomation as this is reporting Ver 1.4b. While most driver websites are saying the last version was V1.10. I did notice one query over at Wims Bios, with no replies.... This thing has 1.3 ghz Duron processor which would fill the bill nicely for a server for my home network. Thanks Jake
  16. Well, that explains why Nero In-CD formats to a little over 600mb Ain't you just a ray of sunshine .... but as it turns out, we gained the upper hand. While leaning on my shovel, sipping a hot chocolate....neighbors garage door opens and here he comes with this monster snow blower his wife got him for Christmas. We cheered and applauded as he effortlessly undid the dirty work of the mad snowplow crews! Jake
  17. Excellent idea! /Rant Now I'll go back and shovel some more snow. Snow plows push from street to walks. We shovel from the walks to the street. Ain't life grand! /End Rant Jake
  18. Just a passing thought ... If these editors are trying to load the whole file into memory first...that might be the hang up? I did notice that with Wavosaur ...no hard drive activity light till I was done editing. i was going to try streaming a cassette tape into one large wav file to see if it could handle it. But all this snow keeps up staging my plans. Calling for another 6 to 12 inches tomorow. Jake
  19. Hi .. Not sure if this will fill the need, but I been toying with it for awhile and it does some impressive things for the size and speed. http://www.wavosaur.com/ No mention of .flac files however Jake
  20. Hi; http://www.irfanview.com/ It is hard finding something to not like about it! Jake
  21. Yes, boy do I remember that . A 486/ 66mhz with 8 meg ram and Win95a. The 520 meg hard drive seemed huge till Office 95 and IE4.0 came along, then things started getting crowded real fast. Jake
  22. FWIW I have 2 of those cards here.. The largest hard drive I have used is 320gb Sata. The one from SYBA came with CD with drivers for a dozen or so cards. The trick is, the drivers are listed by chipset, not card Manuf. But include Raid/Non-Raid configurations. For instance, the SYBA card uses INIC drivers. My Startech card uses Silicon-Image drivers. They work incredibly well, and offer boot options as a SCSI device. At any rate, if you can't find them easily....This CD may have them on it. Jake
  23. Hi : Just as a pasing thought ...and if you have not already, Boot in safe mode and goto Device manager and remove any and all sound devices shown there. Then check ... "C:\windows\inf\other\" for any sound card inf files shown there. Move them to some out of the way place. Then see if pointing to the right drivers let's them install correctly when you reboot! HTH Jake
  24. No doubt, some of the Pro's around here have known about this since Moby Dick was a minnow. But it caught me be surprise. As a rule of thumb, if I find a wallpaper I like and the original size is bigger than my desktop, fire up Irfanview, resize it and save as a .bmp file in my Windows directory. Today, I find this gorgeous landscape with the download as a .bmp file. 1280 x 1024. Dump in Windows directory, look at desktop properties which is set to "stretch". The whole picture is viewable. Set it to "center" and the edges of the picture go off screeen in 1024 x 768. Reset to "Stretch" and the whole picture again is viewable. Almost a contradiction in terms. How I could be running the same OS for over 10 years and never noticed is remarkable.... Jake
  25. Correct me if I'm wrong ...but I think this is it... http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...19a2c3df108.exe I just downloaded it Jake
