  1. You bet ......truth be known, it was ahead of it's time.... Jake
  2. Really? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...25900&st=11 (same thread posted before, this time pointing directly to post #12 ) jaclaz LOL ...what can I say....somehow, being a dyed in the wool 98se user, it never occurs to me to look in a Vista forum for topics of interest (but that's just me).....I'm just always interested hearing about experiences of other 98se/ME users.....I fix computers for a hobby, and it's amazing how many hand - me - downs get passed around with hard drives loaded with garbage. But anyway, thanks for the link..... Jake
  3. On the same subject, but from a different chapter......Univ of Calif @ San Diego did some interesting work on the Secure Erase function built in to most Hard drives and provide a utilty to access it.... http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml Jake
  4. Came upon this article ...supposedly a whole bunch of urban legend is laid to rest.... http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/...ettled-at-last/ Jake
  5. Just thought I would drop by and say thanks.....Kernelex4 rc2 fixed several things and did not break anything....as a matter of fact, my machine is more stable than before ... Jake Ps: now if I could just stop flash from hosing things...
  6. Oops ...sorry ....
  7. Phew, glad it is not just my system....I can confirm it happens w/ IE 6.1.....Seamonkey 1.1.14 / 1.1.15... In fact Seamonkey pops up a warning, that Flash xxx has performed and illegal operation...do a restart Jake
  8. Stumbled on these several months ago.....I have used them for 3 different pen drives, a USB Zip drive, USB Cd burner....just unique in that they work for so many things. The caveat, is that they do not survive a system crash very well....just boot in safe mode and remove / let them reinstall next boot Shows up in device manager under Hard drive controllers (2 entries) and under USB (1 entry) http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_6.html BTW, do not do a right click context menu install on the inf file....let windows do it Jake
  9. oh does creative use all the same name drivers? like nvidia use force ware drivers and all of the divers are forceware 56.55 to 170.77 and see this http://www.soundblaster.com/products/produ...17510&nav=2 wow needs a lot of power my computer only has 933mhz pentium 3 and 256mb of pc-133 sd ram LOL I have one similiar right here in front of me, marked Live 5.1 Digital ...coded SB0220....works...98se Installed one in a Pentium II 450 w/ 256 meg ram ...XP pro....works great.... All that horsepower they are talking about is 100's of megs of software they install with the sound card.... Any way, if not sure about a set of drivers, I just use last freeware version of Total unintall.....it survives the reboots required to make sure something works Jake
  10. Yea......SB_live_5.1.zip Located on driver guide....99% sure they are the ones I last used to reload a friends system....if you want I can put them on a download site somewhere .....~4.5 meg Jake
  11. Bingo....last one in the list worked....($20 shareware) One other thing, found a foot note in with info I saved about joining ZD_Net years ago....sure enough, in a list of downloads I wanted from them was HD Light utilty....at least I know where I found it....times like this I think it would be nice to Google my Apt.... Thanks
  12. You'll never regret leaving yourself a life boat ....burn them to a CD .....the Windows ME boot floppy gives you the option of booting with CD rom support.... Murphy's law always annoyed me, but sometimes the best offense is a good defense Jake
  13. That's one that's avoidable....do yourself a favor and grab the last freeware version of Total uninstall and everytime you think about not using it, remember all the countless hours it takes to reload a system. In Fact, I now go to the other extreme and when I get things fine tuned just the way I want them, I fire up Western Digital Lifeguard util and make a bootable mirror of my drive C to another hard drive.... Jake
  14. Thanks, I had run accross that one once before... bugs me, I know that old one for Windows 95 has to be here somewhere..(I never throw anything away... ) ... Jake
  15. Yep ..."The 65,536 Cylinder (31.5 GiB / 33.8 GB) Barrier" All the drives I have laying around here have a jumper setting to circumvent the issue, but since I got this Pci-ide card, it is not a problem...I hate having cluttered Drive C anyway...
  16. ...Which 32 GB barrier? Bios ....Ms5169 rev 2.1 .....Bios v 3.1
  17. That's the idea...really don't need to log activity....use the last freware version of Comparator to Log changes....have a couple 700 meg+ databases stored on a pair of 80gig drives ....sometimes searches can leave you with the illusion that nothing is happening.....would be nice to know things are busy at a glance.... Thanks Jake
  18. Hi ... First ...thanks Tihiy for Uberskin and Iptest.....between that and Desktop sidebar....Cool.. Question? Years ago I had a small utilty that put a set of HD activity lights in the systray/ win95 ....have rumaged thru my archives for weeks and can't find it... reason being, am using a pci-ide card to get around 32gb barrier and gives me Ultra Dma 5 with no errors.....but no IDE light connection....any body know of such an animal for 98se? TIA Jake
