  12. The Virginia Supreme Court ruled against America Online in its efforts to protect the identity of one of its 35 million subscribers by asking the court to quash a subpoena calling for the member's name in an issue that goes to the heart of the anonymity of the Internet. The ruling against the world's largest Internet service provider, based in Dulles, Va., was the latest in the evolution of privacy laws as they pertain to the Internet and identities of Web surfers, privacy experts said. "The law is very unsettled and still being written. Any decision by the highest court of any state--particularly the one where AOL resides--is significant,'' said David Sobel, general counsel at Electronic Privacy Information Center. C|net
  13. A new mass-mailing computer virus known as W32.Braid has slowly spread among PCs over the weekend, said U.K. e-mail service provider MessageLabs. Although the company has seen only 43 copies of the virus--indicating an extremely slow start--W32.Braid shares some attributes of the widely spread Klez family of viruses and could potentially have similar success. One such feature: Both viruses forge a fake sender address in the e-mails they use to propagate themselves, which makes finding infected PCs more difficult. The Klez.h variant of the Klez virus has sent out millions of e-mail messages with a copy of itself attached. Since it was first placed on the Internet in April, the virus has topped the charts of malicious e-mail attachments found by antivirus firms and e-mail service providers, which filter junk e-mail for companies and also zap messages that have viruses attached. 14. Gistum, If I understand you correctly, you have numerous XP Pro clients trying to attach to a server via a VPN?
  15. A new prototype Internet-based system allows U.S. police departments to share information about a particular suspect's criminal records and crime activity across the U.S. by using an intelligence gathering tool known as "Coplink." Developed at an artificial intelligence laboratory at the University of Arizona, Coplink can enable police departments to establish links quickly among their existing information files and those of other police departments, then links and compares the data found from those files by cross-referencing that information. Designed by Hsinchun Chen, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Arizona, Chen says of his prototype Coplink, "It's the Google [an Internet search engine that uses words to locate related Web sites] for law enforcement. Things that a human can do intuitively we are getting the computer to do, too." http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/20021...104_005208.html

  17. Intel released three new Xeon chips for four- and eight-processor servers in a move to increase the pressure on Sun Microsystems. The new chips--formerly code-named Gallatin--are enhanced versions of Intel's Xeon line for multiprocessor servers. The fastest of the new chips runs at 2GHz and contains a 2MB tertiary cache, a reservoir of memory for rapid data access. The older Xeon, which came out in March, tops out at 1.6GHz and has a 1MB cache. "The performance speed-up is in the 20 (percent) to 38 percent range" on various applications, said Lisa Graff, director of enterprise processor marketing at Intel. "Cache (has) a huge impact on performance." http://news.com.com/2100-1001-964329.html?tag=lh
  18. WASHINGTON--Friday's antitrust ruling may give Microsoft powerful ammunition to defend against more than 60 private lawsuits pending against the software giant, legal experts say. In separate actions Friday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly approved with few changes a November 2001 settlement between Microsoft, the Justice Department and nine states and then she issued the revised settlement as her remedy in continued litigation brought by nine other states and the District of Columbia. In the 344-page memorandum supporting her decision, Kollar-Kotelly potentially set limits on the use of U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's "findings of fact" in other cases. Many of the cases already faced an uphill struggle, but would have greatly benefited from the document's use to show Microsoft had harmed consumers or competitors, legal experts say. But Kollar-Kotelly's comments, part of her explanation for not imposing the stiffer sanctions requested by the plaintiff states, could effectively gut the majority of private cases pending against Microsoft. http://news.com.com/2100-1001-964366.html?tag=lh
