  1. that would be fine to get to the recovery console, as long as its an install disc and not a recovery disc.
  2. Dont think you will find anything, though I would suspect "resource hacking" (DLL and system file modifications) would be required and I doubt you want modified system files in your environment to accomodate your policy.
  3. Are you sure you have been to the control panel and moved the "pointer speed" slider in the mouse control panel?
  4. If you can grab yourself a windows xp cd, you could follow the posts on this link http://www.ozzu.com/mswindows-forum/window...dll-t53834.html but you need a xp cd for gaining access to the recovery console. You could try a bartPE disc and run the instructions from that link.
  5. sorry to hear your typing ability is restricted, dont know what I would do if I lost my typing ability. This might be a start....try dual booting windows xp and vista. This guide is probably going to be beneficial for you because you have vista installed first and trying to dual boot with vista installed first is usually a pain! http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_a...ystep_guide.htm EDIT: are you sure this is right Intel Xeon 3110 3MHz Core2 Duo. - 3Mhz?!
  6. dont think this is what you are after but then again you didn't post massive amounts of information about your environment (domain or no domain?) http://ryanschwartz.net/2004/09/16/quickly...to-new-hardware this may also be of use to you. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/userpath.htm
  7. http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/...ty-manager.html .....is one possibility. Try google, if you still have this problem. If you fix this problem, report back so people know to skip past this post or take it's responses as worthy.
  8. I heard they spent over 200,000 ($ or £) on those anti-piracy measures....so how has it helped their situation? I also hear it is not smooth on hardware that runs crysis. I won't be going near it because Securom is involved and I dont want that crap near my machine.
  9. Install Xvid, use VLC and remove the codec pack For all other codecs you may require in the future, have GSpot handy. (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/)
  10. Anyone know how many processes are running on Windows 7 fresh install?? Vista has an insane amount(compared to XP) running from a fresh install.
  11. Now provide more information relating to the user account priviledges (admin or limited), any recent changes you made with any tools like TweakUI, Resource Editors, Group Policy editor and such. What happens if you right click on the partition and click open instead of open with? if that works bash your shift and control keys to make sure they aren't sticking and try opening by double click again. What does disk management show?
  12. I expect the user has a Microsoft Mouse, probably an Intellimouse, and the issue here is likely to be the bad microswitches they used on earlier models which resulted in a second click being registered on releasing the button. There are two fixes, one is to replace the mouse with another one, or download MouseFix from this site (scroll down to find a description of problem) http://www.danieljackson.co.uk/fun/old/ You need to extract the MouseFix.exe and MouseFixDll.dll somewhere (I used to put it at C:\MouseFix). Run MouseFix.exe and then try your back button again. It will not go back twice. To use permanently create a shortcut to the MouseFix.exe and place it in the Startup folder in the Start Menu. The author originally created it for his failing Microsoft Intellimouse with the problem similar to the microsoft KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;266738
  13. Have you installed the software that came with the mouse? IntelliPoint I think it's called. If so then either uninstall it or configure it in there. You could install microsoft's TweakUI powertoy because I remember seeing options in there for what you require.
  14. Provide information relating to: - which version of XP, home or pro - how many hard drives do you have - how many partitions do you have, which partitions are on which hard drive - how old the hard drive that contains the not opening partitions Have you tried a smart query tool to check if the hard drive is overheating? Please provide more information for the top guns to help you.
  15. In vista you can also disable the Shell Hardware Detection service and this prevents autorun and the windows autorun menu you describe, I believe it will do the same in XP.
  16. you should probably state whether you are running windows xp HOME or PRO because the solutions will be different for each version. I believe what you are requiring makes use of the Group Policy Editor, but I couldn't advise you how.

    Solved

thanks for coming back with your own fix, it will help others. I would suggest ammending the title of the thread to help other people when searching topic titles only.
  18. Would going to recovery console from the windows xp cd now give you a command prompt that would let you do this? http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm may help explain more and also to add it as a boot option
  19. In the future VLC player will play almost all format you may have.
  20. I have seen this problem before, and this Microsoft article covers the solution for the similar incident I dealt with, albeit a different cause. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555206 As usual backup registry if you dont know what you are doing.
  21. On your profile image(avatar) what does the arrow pointing to the center say?

  22. You say slow file transfers were fixed in SP1 but they aren't that much faster than pre-SP1 and certainly are not as fast as XP SP2 was. I admit I might be slightly subjective as I haven't used XP SP2 as my main OS for a while but there was certainly a noticeable slowdown between XP and Vista SP1. My question was more of a "Have they improved the file transfer speeds" which seems to have been subjectively answered with so I am happy
  23. I would have produced a capture of the working scenario as well to help compare. I personally have never read through a saved network capture but have briefly used wireshark and such tools at university for like less than 1hour so I dont know how much info these tools provide. Hope you didn't send any passwords in plaintext
  24. A quick google search revealed the following method creating a program in VB6. I guess you could load this up in your script as the first thing it runs. Source: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programmin...Q_21805315.html I have access to Visual Studio somewhere so I could attempt to build this for you at somepoint if you are not able to, just PM me if you want anything like this.
