  1. Windows Xp with which service packs? There was a required update to get wireless working with wpa personal or wpa2 personal (i dont remember which) on a SP2 machine but I dont think that will help for the WEP. Have you checked that the WEP key length is the same in the XP machine you are using and the access point you already have setup. I always prefer to use the windows own wireless configuration utility because its simple and integrated into the os anyway. To enable it you uninstall the wireless software and it should re-enable the windows own wireless configuration utility. The service may need re-enabling. I have found in the past that the uninstaller for the manufacturer's wireless software uninstalls the drivers. To overcome this, it is usually possible to extract the drivers out of the software installer, open up device manager and point the new hardware driver installation wizard to your extracted drivers. Hope this helps, although I would recommend you switch to WPA/WPA2 if the hardware supports it and use create a key with special characters, that and if the data transmitted is deemed important because WEP is considered a weak encryption. (But you already knew that being RedHat user, right?! )
  2. In windows 7 have they fixed the slow file transfers as part of these mentioned performance increases??
  3. I get rendering issues with google searches too, but not every single time. I search, it gets x amount of results, where x > 10 and it shows the first 3 results and the page selectors at the bottom of my visible window, but if I click and select the text it expands the rest of the results. Does this mean google need kicking too? I had a problem in Beta 1 and in Beta 1 IE7 compatability mode where the google cart icons and sometimes the google cart with the maps zoom selectors would appear over the google logo on search results pages. I guess I will go file the bug(s) shortly, but I was mainly adding to the list of cons so people could confirm with this thread if they were having the issues too.
  4. Check some of these links out that Jaclaz posted in reponse to my question yesterday. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=111406 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=121446 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120444 I haven't personally looked at them yet but Jaclaz is the man, so I trust his references are worthy

    Solved

This probably has nothing to do with it, but as a starter have you made sure that the print spooler service is started and set to manual/automatic? Also have you tried any drivers from the internet which are pretty much guaranteed to be newer than the ones contained on your driver cd. visit this page i found at kodak's website. http://wwwuk.kodak.com/global/en/service/d...loadLanguage=en That is the UK support site as I couldn't be bothered faking my origin and the website detects which region of the world I am in instead of presenting a map like some other companies do. If you prefer to get the file from a US location visit here(http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jht...pq-locale=en_US) and select the following:- Click Go and change the OS in the list to Windows XP and get the *software* download not the firmware download (unless you know what you are doing). Install those and see if you have the same problem.
  6. Updated release date according to http://www.rockstargames.com/IV/#?page=pc is Which means its out now. (only just realised it's the 4th December, whoops )
  7. My default provider of Google didn't get changed. I did uninstall IE8 beta 1 and install IE8 beta 2 without opening IE7 inbetween so I guess thats different to your scenario. I did get the x64 version though. My main annoyance has to be the status bar behaviour. I love having the status bar on all applications I run I dont have a problem with status bars, but in IE8 beta 2 when I hover over a link, the address flashes quickly in the status bar and is quickly replaced with the word "Done". This only happens the first time you hover over a link on the currently loaded page, after that it displays all links properly until you refresh or load another page up. A secondary pain in the neck is some pages appear garbled but if I select with my left mouse button and drag, I see the content sort of refresh/spread out to its proper position. Is that a rendering bug or something else? And lol @ porn mode, I haven't had a chance to look but I assume you are referring to the InPrivate browsing feature.
  8. No, just undocumented feature/change was all I was hinting at.
  9. Follow this guys registry changes *CAREFULLY* http://bbs.myunreal.com/showpost.php?p=557...amp;postcount=1 and then follow the "How to Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk" section of the microsoft KB309044 article and see if that works Original response below (I am avoiding a double post) Source: http://windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm...playTab=Article Hope this helps you to at least understand why its showing in device manager and not windows disk management. I will keep looking to see if you can convert it back or what your options might be. For now I am guessing you could download Gparted or BartPE live cd create a second partition out of the empty space on the 80GB drive and make it a basic fat32 partition and copy content. You might have to do this in multiple stages if you have very little space on it. 1. *move*(not copy) as much content to the 30GB as you can in a live environment such as a ubuntu or bartPE live cd 2a. use a partitioning tool in a live environment such as Gparted or any tool included in the BartPE live cd (not used in a while so dont know its name) 2b. Resize the partition on the 80gb 2c. create a new fat32 or ntfs partition in the new free space 3. *move*(not copy) content to the new partition from the first partition on the 80gb (not the 30GB) either in the live environment or try to in windows to make sure your efforts are working. 4a. resize the first partition on the 80GB drive again 4b. resize the second partition on the 80gb drive 5. *move*(not copy) content to the new partition from the first partition on the 80gb (not the 30GB) either in the live environment or in windows if it worked in step 3. 6. repeat as needed to eradicate the first partition. I am not 100% sure this will help you get the drive out of Dynamic Disk state as it might not be partition based could be mbr based but its worth trying upto step 3 to start with. EDIT: just found this microsoft KB article but I doubt it will apply to xp home.
  10. Assumptions: - you have 2 PCs (one from school & current one from home) - you have 2 hard drives (from home pc) - you have OS on 30gb hard drive - you have media on 80gb hard drive Explain some things such as how old are the drives? a 30gb maxtor would be near 6yrs old now? 80gb maybe 5yrs old? Providing the names of the manufacturer(s) of the drives will allow people to help you more, I think you should visit your drive manufacturer's homepage and look for their diagnostic tools as I looked at a computer where the bios recognised the drive but it had many errors on the drive due to overheating according to the diagnostic tools I got from maxtor/seagate, think they are called seatools and you load them up at boot time from a cd. Have you still got access to the files on the 80gb hd when plugged into the machine it came out of? if so maybe its a power issue on the pc from school. Try removing the cdrom and floppy drive power connectors to give the power supply a chance to power the second hard drive. Hope this helps to start you off.
  11. I am wanting to install TO a USB/SD, the other information was just background reading. The tutorials in dietmar's signature all point to the same first post and none of the posts below it are expanded, that will take years to read I hope to get there one day, thanks again. tutorial 5 is what I am looking for by the looks of the tutorial 5 PDF available for download from his website(http://www.winusb.de/tutorial_en.html) I had already looked at tutorial 3 and thought why do i have to install it to hard drive first. This helps alot, thanks!!
  12. Ok so wireless is out of the question thats good. As for IE7 being involved, to me the microsoft ethos has always seemed "how can restrict the user further" so I agree it lies with an IE7 design flaw/change hence why I am suggesting some of the common IE patches/changes most people should make on a fresh install. Does this happen with a fresh install of IE7? if not then have you tried the IE7 reset feature?(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737) Maybe an IE7 install sets some networking restrictions outside of IE7, you know as sort of a hidden bundled update/feature. You will probably need to provide more information to get responses from other members.
  13. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=122624 This allows you to adjust the tcp half open connections. Some people recommend to lower the default, some recommend higher. Here is a link(http://blog.davidkaspar.com/archives/2005/...ent-id-4226.php) explaining that the limit microsoft imposed in SP2 might cause problems for network intensive applications. EDIT: by slow links you don't mean wireless do you?
  14. hi jaclaz! I have seen your name around here on many of the good reading topics and see you are well respected. I dont mean any disrespect quoting the other guides, those are just some that I found looking for eeepc related material as this has stemmed from my dad wanting windowsxp as an option for his eeepc. I am only testing in VirtualBox at the moment. One thing I am still wondering after reading all these guides is why we still have to install to a hard drive first and then copy to a usb stick? I thought it would be possible to create some hacked drivers for use in the txtsetup portion of the installer which would allow the usb device to be seen and used as the target for installation. Could you please give me a technical description of why this is not possible. Thanks.
  15. Cfadisk does work with this HardwareID. EXCELLENT!!! thanks for that I will test this over the next few days to see how far I get. I will not be requiring devcon as I would have to devcon all my existing flash drives / sd card readers and then add them to the list which is no good if I am wanting to have it work generically for any removable drive. Will report back when I have done some testing. Thanks again.
  16. I found this guide(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-sp...ance-vista.html) quite useful, its actually a list of miniguides under the heading of "How to Speed Up the Performance of Vista"
  17. could it be related to IE7 being limited to 2 concurrent download sessions at a time? If you think that there maybe more than 2 streams and with the slower links causing delays the 3rd or nth stream would therefore be delayed from starting, effectively queued until either of the first two streams complete. The faster link would probably downloads/stream faster and not cause this issue. Also I believe IE6 doesn't have this limit and thats why it works, as it can send x amount of streams simultaneously, regardless of how fast. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282402
  18. Hi, thanks for the reply. I think someone mentions in the comments that it is a rip from another site, so you are right about that. As for the txt mode setup driver integration, thanks for the confirmation as I was about to plan on using this guide http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=19792 to see if it would get me anywhere. My next problem is that the drivers are not for any of my usb drives, rather the guide at http://www.3eportal.com/index.php?option=c...14&Itemid=9 states : Does anyone know what I can place inside the cfadisk.inf to cater for *ANY* usb/sd drive? Are there any generic strings I can replace the guides example of Disk&Ven_USB2.0&Prod_CardReader_SD0&Rev_0100 with? EDIT I think I meant "Does anyone know what I can place inside the cfadisk.inf to cater for *ANY* HardwareID?" END EDIT
  19. Usually on the PATH variable you have the . (period/full stop) listed as one of the paths. This signifies current directory and it usually required in circumstances like these. I know I required it to compile java classes from any directory when using the command line.
  20. *WARNING* - modification to the registry required, please make a backup as described here (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/registry.htm) if it is a timeout issue, please look here (http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1262/) to increase the value
  21. Please provide more information for us to help. You might want to post information about your current setup, anything that is of importance to you(backup of data) and what OS licences you legally hold for use when reinstalling. EDIT And what OS discs you have. END EDIT If you have an OEM machine, you *might* encounter problems activating windows.
  22. Hi, I have recently been interested in installing windows xp to either an SD card or a USB flash drive. Over the last week I have been researching how to install windows xp FROM a usb stick following this guide (http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installin...-usb-thumb.html) and how to make a removable USB device fixed using Hitachi Microdrive filter drivers (download http://xpefiles.com/cs/files/folders/hardware/entry616.aspx). But ultimately I want to follow this guide(http://www.3eportal.com/index.php?option=c...14&Itemid=9) but without having to do the clone operation. My question is based on the above background reading :- How can I integrate the hitachi microdrive filter drivers so I can install directly to a SD card or usb flash/hard drive? I suspect the driver integration will be the easiest part, with your help of course, but the tuning of the string I need to use with the modified filter driver will be the hard part, if it is at all possible to get a usb device recognised at the start of a xp installation for use as the primary drive. I have both a computer that will boot from usb flash drives and a flash drive that can be booted from using the following guide (http://dmoisan.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns...A!281.entry) Thanks for taking a look. MATT EDIT I have seen that I can integrate drivers using nlite after installing it just now, but I would like to know if this caters for text mode (f6 driver floppy) situation that I now think is needed to get a usb drive to be the primary install target device. END EDIT
