  1. Another way is using the ProfilesDir entry in sysprep, this moves the whole documents and settings tree from ref.chm in the xp deploy tools Syntax ProfilesDir = path_to_profile_folder Value path_to_profile_folder Default Value "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Documents and Settings" Example ProfilesDir = "%SYSTEMROOT%\Profiles" I used to use this to put my docs and settings on the D:\ drive of my PC, thats a better way than re-directing to c:\ and more secure.
  2. Hi This document from, HP which applies to XP can be used with 2000, the important part in getting a universal image is using sysprep to reset the pnp ID's. check out the link below for a handy PDF by HP although it applies to any hardware not just HP. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/generic...c00592862&lc=en I use this technique extensivly with Win2k and XP on HP\compaq, Dell and home brew PC's without any probems. regards Ian
  3. Hi I was going to write something but i found this Tech Forums Have fun, Ian
  4. good old google http://www.etherboot.org/ http://rom-o-matic.net/ http://netboot.sourceforge.net/ These should help you generate a PXE rom to boot with. TTFN
  5. Just use HFSLIP and FDV's files to make a streamlined OS without IE and OE regards Ian
  6. Other, in the Uk I'd suggest Fujitsu corporate boxes (built and supported very well) or Dell as the they've driven the price point for a "basic computer" down with some excellent offers. I support HP/Compaq for a living and frankly can't recommend em. Personally I'll build my own still, and have nearly stopped building them for clients too as i can't compete with dell, etc for a basic pc - games machines are a different story and here i'd recommend SavRow or Mesh in the UK. As far as Laptops go stick with coporate models only from IBM or Dell, HP are Ok but can be troublesome. corporate models are best as the parts supply is usually excellent, and you can pick up some excellent deals on 1-2 year old refurb thinkpads and Lattitudes. Regards Ian
  7. Hi, I'm implementing DFS at work, and one thing to bear in mind is replication iss great for static data, but not for dynamic data(even ms don't recommend this) For some good reading on the topic check out this http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversyst...chitecture.mspx Regards Ian
  8. http://pxes.sourceforge.net/howtos/ms_only_environment/ for a guide that can be adapted to configure TFTP32 in a NT/AD domain. Works a treat top work, Natan770 - now to play and see what size the images compress to. Cheers Ian
  9. hi you can add entries to the RIS menu to call a ghost boot image, and then image a PC. To do this requires Ghost cast server, have a look at the boot disk wizard. i built a setup like that with W2k3 Server and norton ghost Solution Suite (http://sea.symantec.com/content/product.cfm?productid=9) see here of a full guide http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost...m_ghost_suite_1 Regards Ian
  10. You forgot the.... You shall never read the instruction manual of any device/car/software application. And Men see only in 16 colours, i.e. its green (not mint) brown (not tan, biege etc.) this is particularly important during any decorating. Also to go with the Xmas tip, for women please note men don't do subtle, so tell us what you want, hints just don't work!
  11. Hi All, had a re-install over the weekend did the following and have my quick lauch working inplace at first logon. This is what I did, Creating the source Starting from a new Win2k OEM SP4 Source copied from Select CD. Slipstreamed Gurglemeyers Sp5 pack (http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=130) into the i386 dir. (Sorry but i haven't had time to get HFSLIP going yet but i will do eventually) The File Set Using the latest set, I edited the IE.INF as Oleg_II suggested and the I modified the WINNT.SIF to an unattended WINNT.TXT and changed it suit my region and added a line for my GuiRunOnce cmd file. The modified set was then copied into the i386 dir. The WINNT.TXT then lives in the root. $OEM$ I created $OEM$ folders in both the Install root and the i386 dir and populated them with the following folders, $1\Install, $1\Drivers and $$\System32 where i include various small addons like PSshutdown, and startup.cpl (Mike Lins excellent startup tool). In the install folder i include Firefox and 7Zip, which I install via GuiRunOnce The startup.cmd file looks like this. ECHO. ECHO Installing Firefox 1.5 RC3 start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\firefox.exe -ms ECHO. ECHO Installing 7-Zip 4.23 Start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\7z423.exe /s Installation I then ran the install from a dos boot disk with this command. d:\w2k\winnt.exe /s:D:\W2K\i386 /u:d:\win2k\winnt.txt All went ok apart from I'll have to find the correct switches for 7Zip silent install I think the install of firefox creates the QL folder and everything goes swimmingly from there. I know this my not help some of you that want a browser free install, but for me and i expect many it will be an acceptable solution. I hope this helps someone. Any questions fire away Regards Ian (Tioaboa)
  12. Hi Oleg I think my Unattended installs of Firefox complete the final step in my case creating the quick lauch folder in the "%MyProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer" location. I'll have to try commenting those lines out of IE.inf next time i reinstall. Which will be soon as I've bust CHM support when i ran winhtml.inf, and regestering the DLLs doesn't work, and it did on the updated fileset. Cheers Ian
  13. Hi Crash, wouldn't let me attach muttered about file sizes so thought i'd just quote it. Sorry, ..... cheers Ian

  15. Hi All I Have the Quick Launch working on an SP5 updated W2k Source. I slipstreamed Gurglemeyers SP5 roll-up to a W2ksp4 source, and used the october 2004 file set. The only other thing I do is run a silent install of firefox, and a couple of other apps in the GUIRunOnce section of the WINNT.SIF I'll include my edited WINNT.SIF, its mostly regional changes. actually thinking about it it had the current file set in first and i over wrote it with the oct 04 set. but hey quick lauch works. my WINNT.SIF Looks like this and the start.cmd The fileset is too big to attach PM me if you want it its 658K and its labelled sp4files2.zip dated 26/10/04 if that helps FDV. Cheers
  16. Hi Bravotech, I'm about to do the same thing myself, on XP I found this googling around which appears to be two version specific reg files. http://eu.shuttle.com/en/DesktopDefault.as...626_read-11409/ which sounds like what you've done before. I normally via create these entries via sysprep to make my xp and w2k installs universal, i can't in this case as its a mates pc. My installs I can swap around disks between any ide controller without issues. I can post how if your interested Regards Ian
  17. actually no i'm typing this on an win2k built on an old revision of FDV's files, and all i had to do to enable quick launch is create the folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and that was that. Oleg sorted the wmv file playback that was because i hadn't installed dx9c! so to make them work you need all DX9c and all the ms codec packs. Cheers Ian
  18. Hi guys i've been playing quietly for a while, think i can contribute something. i figured this one out check if itss.dll is in your c:\winnt\system32 and if its there run regsvr32 itss.dll and then chm files should work you may have to associate chm files with hh.exe in the system32 dir too. worked for me.... can't fathom the quick launch issue yet still messing will report back when i've figured it out. one question for you guys i've a few wmv files that i can't get to play i've installed all manner of windows codecs without success, any suggestions. Cheers Ian
  19. oops sorry Fred (fdv). I have to say I like your style the remove-ie pages are a excellent resource for those like me who hate the bug ridden mess that is IE. Cheers Ian
  20. Hi Gurglemeyer well done - the USP5.0 is a top piece of work it applied sucessfully on my Vorck custom Win2k install (for those not in the know Fred Vorck (FDV in these forums) created a method of installing Win2k without IE see here for more details http://www.vorck.com/remove-ie.html). nothing seems to be broken and importantly on IE components were added I think. Will try adding to my install source eventually as time permits Regards, Ian Tioaboa
  21. On win2k that doesn't work as each new profile has its own access defaults. even if OE isn't on the start menu its added to the quick lauch by default, clearing that key prevents the active setup portion of the registry from creating icon. we use Outlook as a corperate std, and we still have dumb users who click on OE and wonder where their mail is ! so the icon has to go! Regards Ian
  22. Time to give back to this very valuble site! To remove that dratted Outlook Express Icon from the Quick Launch bar for good, for any new profile delete the stub path from this key In regedit, locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} Delete only the value 'StubPath' - (StubPath - REG_EXPAND_SZ - "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\setup50.exe"/app:OE/CALLER:WINNT/user/install) I remove it as part of a VBS Script, Create This file by pasting the text in to a VBS file Regards Ian
  23. Ah you young whippersnappers... I remember scripting automated 98 installs all you need is here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q214727 or have a google for batch.inf files. Regards Ian
  24. check out the ref.chm in the deploy cab file [shell] DefaultThemesOff=Yes DefaultStartPanelOff=Yes try that in your unattended.txt that turns off themes and the stupid double width startmenu. Cheers Ian
