  1. Services run until something stops them. Set them to automatically restart if they fail. Use the last option to reboot the client machine if the service fails. No need to monitor each client.
  2. Are you monitoring the clients or the servers?
  3. Did you create a Restore Point before you mucked about? Do you have an older Restore Point? If you answer no to the first question, you have failed in the most basic PC operation in not creating a RP or backup before mucking about.
  4. Nobody comes even close to the "smart" TV recording that is standard in MCE 2005. Want to record a program every Friday night? But what is it has been pre-empted by some special? No problem it won't record. Want to record only first run shows? No problem as MCE will ignore reruns and only record first runs. What if the usual one hour show is two hours? No problem, MCE goes out before record time and checks the broadcast schedual. If there is a 2 hour special instead of the usual one hour it records two hours automatically without user interventation. There are even cool tools available to trim commercials out and another tool to compress into WMV all done using your MCE Remote Control.
  5. You CAN NOT upgrade from Pro or Home to MCE. It must be a clean install of MCE...
  6. Use the migration tool and migrate to Win 2003 Server. After the migration check to see if everything migrated properly. Then take the old Win2K PDC offline.
  7. Has Asus tested the Cruical memory for your MB? Is it listed in the tested memory list? I have found following the recomended Asus memory choices have led to working systems each time. Not all memory is created equal. Cruical is great memory but you never know until you swap it out.

  14. A cheap 5-port switch would be the simplest way to go. Plug it in and then just plug in each client machine. Your done! Why make it a challenge?

  16. Use your browser's History feature to locate the MS signup page. Your order will say "pending" until it actually ships. Then your CC will be charged.

  18. I have a new Compaq Athlon64 3700+ laptop. When my copy of XP Pro x64 arrives, I'll just stick in a new HD and install x64. If it does not work ie. missing drivers, I swap HDs and boot to my orginal install of XP Pro (32-bit). It is already activated. MS has already said that installing x64 will void most manufactures warranties. If I need to send my Compaq laptop in for hardware repairs, I just swap out the HD with the orginal one and send it in.
  19. Create multiple dial-up or VPN connections by copying them in the Network Connections folder. After you copy the connections, you can rename them and modify the connection settings. By doing so, you can easily create different connections to accommodate multiple modems, ISPs, dialing profiles, and so on.
  20. Following in the long MS tradition. One CD, one install on one machine. If you sign up for the upgrade to x64 you agree not to use your 32-bit copy of XP on another machine. So if you install XP Pro x64 and you don't like it. Reinstall your copy of 32-bit XP Pro. Pretty simple to me. Why would MS charge you for a download? They have never charged for downloads. Shipping and handling means they (MS) ships it to you via the mail or other international package carrier. If you have a CD in your hands you use it just like any other operating system CD. Stick it in you CD ROM drive and boot from it. I run MS Office 2003 Professional (32-bit) with no problems on top of XP Pro x64. Will any 32-bit game run on x64? I have no idea. There are lists around the web on what does install and runs on x64. You will have to do your homework or find out by trial and error. It is not an upgrade in the traditional sense. It is a new product and requires a "clean install." It will not install over XP Pro 32-bit. You also agreee not to "dual-boot" it as well. The only version that you can download is the x64 trial version. It is timebombed and will expire at some point in the future. OEM means built by a company like Dell or you local white box builder. Is your copy of XP Pro legit? Did you purchase an OEM copy of XP Pro or Retail? You are allowed to upgrade either version. Does it ask for or infer anywhere in the conditions about verifying with recepits? So, the answer is no.
  21. The Technology Advancement Program Source My point was if you read the documentation, it spells out exactly what happens when you upgrade from 32-bit XP Pro to 64-bit XP Pro x64. "will no longer be licensed" seems pretty clear to me. We'll let you move to a newer operating system but there is a catch. You give up one for the other. Simple... Microsoft has never charged for Service Packs or Hot-fixes. They have charged a nominal shipping fee for various programs like the Corporate Preview Program for Windows 2003 Serverand the Technology Advancement Program which is what we are talking about here. This is nothing new with Microsoft. The Technology Advancement Program in a nutshell. The choice is yours... Microsoft spells it out pretty clear in the above statement of conditions. If you want to participate in the program, you acknowledge those conditions and agree to them to participate. Don't like the any of the conditions, then it is very simple... don't participate in the program. My three upgrades to XP Pro x64 and Windows 2003 Server x64 cost me a total of $39.15 in shipping fees. That tiny fee is a hell of a lot cheaper than going out and purchasing new systems with x64 preinstalled. x64 is not available on retail shelves. There won't be any retail SKU for either of the x64 products. Your choices are simple. Upgrade through the program or purchase a new system with x64 installed. Any questions???

  23. Why do we have to read stoooopid posts? If you trade up to x64 you loose your XP 32-bit license. That is the way it is. Why do you pay for shipping? Because you do. Don't like it? Don't use it then, move to Linux or better yet, unplug your computer.
