sound like explorer.exe is having problems. can i ask when you last defragged your pc? and how long you have been running xp for? your ram is the minimum required for XP, it should run fine with that, i have a similar spec pc in the next room i dont use, it runs XP ok, if a little slugy and less stable. theres a few options here to fix this, but i my guess is your pc needs defragging.

Crispy, why are you running such a machine!? i can get machines that old for free from college and the local household dump. go check your local "dump it" they pull computers and fridges out of the rubbish, and washing machines too, for recycling reasons, you can just go down and ask to take what you want, hell take the whole pile of machines home and build something out of it for nothing. you might find a broken PIII pc there and salvage some of the parts! before anyone says something bad about doing this... even people such as Bill gates used to do this, dumpster diving is the tech geeks/hackers best friend. Alternativley buy a new pc from my store when its open crispy heheh

i recieved the same email in my inbox at the same time, but both mails had different reply addresses, one was to AOL and one was hotmail, ive also seen a very similar mail to this about a year ago. All they want you to do is reply so that they get real email addresses from Newsgroups, as most people use reply addresses such as robert@-NOSPAM_removetoreply-btinternet.com etc. doing this they only collect valid mails from the people daft enough to reply, angela, the mysterious 22 year old you imagine wears gym skirts and is on the cheerleader team is probably some big hairy fat bloke called Bob who never leaves his house and lives off of kebabs and sending spam. If she was able to read the new groups and reply to a persons email addy she isnt new to the internet, and "its something to do with outlook" doesent wash either or she wouldnt be mailing you or reading from the news groups. and internet newbs have no idea what usenet is!

you could make that .bat file and put it in your WINDOWS folder and set XP or NT or win2k to run it everytime you shut down / startup, possibly everytime you close IE, but id do it on shutdown for performance reasons.

how many defragged filea re on it? and are the defragged files large ones, such as ISO files etc? is this your main windows drive? and is it partitioned? what chipset drivers are you using?
