  1. same. they used to use it at my elementary school with their primitive pre-OSX mac computers. lol.
  2. yeah. XP is a huge operating system compared to 98se. so are, unfortunately, most modern versions of linux. even the lighter ones.
  3. that's odd. maybe it's too new of a format of wmv for wmp6?
  4. Make sure your alternative shell is working, and then edit system.ini. Search for a line Shell=explorer.exe When your alternative shell is not in the search path, you'll have to provide the full pathname. Thank You
  5. what were you trying to open it with? mpc? if so then maybe you should set the .wmv default association with mpc. when I tried playing it, it opened it into windows media player
  6. This took a while to find, so I thought I'd bring it to all of your respective attentions. If you ditch QT, you can't view Quick Time video browser applets or whatever, so I looked into a program called Quick Time Alternative. All of the versions I found were XP or higher only. so I did a google search for "Quick Time Alternative Windows 98se" and found the last version compatible with 9x. it's Quick Time Alternative v. 1.56. it seems to work fine with Quick Time browser applets. by default, it comes with Media Player Classic, but you can install it into the folder of any directshow compatible media player. you get the option in the install to install as many or as few components as you like. I installed only the things that I needed into my K-Lite codec pack folder (which contains my Media Player Classic) so yeah. just thought I should let everyone know.
  7. wow. that actually sounds really excellent! i typically use .rar, but since my WinRAR program has started popping up the "buy me" message, I'm probably going to move to .7z, pretty soon. so maybe use 7z? most people do have 7zip, on this forum.
  8. bit too late. this is good, though, I'll be able to play just about any media files out there. and I can already basically view any image files with the combination of iview and paint shop prothanks to everyone, btw.
  9. it's probably largely because of like all the security and stability stuff in NT versions. the file privelages and whatnot. Takes up alot of space. did you search the Compaq card?
  10. that's pretty epic. Windows 98se is magical that way. I'm astonished by the low system requirements, and high level of useability. same with Windows 95. actually even more so with Win95
  11. thanks for the useful info. i will check KMP out edit: KMP had some sort of error when I tried to open it. Perhaps I will try codec pack.
  12. my dxdiagnostic tool says i'm running version 6.something. but it also says my processor is Pentium III, and I've seen it and know it's Celeron. I'm downloading the install file for v. 9.0c, just incase. edit: i forgot about autopatcher for a sec. installing the update from autopatcher, right now edit2: alright. I guess I did have an old a** version of DX. dxdiag is also much more accurate and complete (reckognizes my intel celeron). now mpc works. thanks so much!
  13. Do you have DirectX 9.0c installed? i think so. let me check.
  14. i speak a little swedish. but I see you've already gotten your answer, so that works.
  15. how does one change their default shell? I'm interested in this.
  16. i installed this, and am not seeing any change. could this be because I only have 16bit color?
  17. I don't think that we, as 9x users, will suffer for a while. Outdated software still works just fine untill the standards and extensions change. I, for one, use AVG free edition, AdAware SE 1.06r, and Kerio 2.1.5 (which I just installed, for lack of a firewall). my AdAware SE is outdated, but I figure that some Anti-spyware is better than no Antispyware. also AbiWord word processor (which is a nice free wordprocessor that annoys me less than the Open Office one). AbiWord and Open Office, both, don't seem to have any intent of discontinuing support soon. Firefox 2.x works for now, and will probably work for a while after it's outdated, and Opera still works. As long as you're not too picky and don't mind lower end compatibility, we should be fine for a while, and then we can move on to Linux or something. maybe buy new computers. Foxit is nice for PDF viewing
  18. That was what i was about to say. There is a program known as XP Icon Raider, which adds XP icons to any version of windoze. I use it and it works perfectly on my ME. What it does is add a DLL and hook the system's icons to it. Perhaps you could analyze this program and make something similar? Though if a DLL is added there will still be reshacking involved. This would be the first thing that comes to my mind. adding a .dll file with the icons, similar to what windows does, but I'm not a particularly knowledgeable person on these sorts of things, so I don't know how well it'd work.
  19. Sorry to trouble you all for the billionth time, but I want to ditch Quicktime in favor of Lighter, more highly compatible MPC. I downloaded a .zip with the Windows 98/ME Media Player Classic executable in it. I unzipped to a program folder, and double clicked the icon. to my astonishment, a message popped up saying that I was missing file ddraw.dll. I did a google search, and came across a forum suggesting to download the file to the system folder. again to my surprise, there was already a file in my system folder called ddraw.dll. needless to say, I can't delete it. so yeah. anyone know what's wrong? when i try to open mpc, a secondary message pops up as well saying "a device attached to the system is not functioning
  20. Once you get to this point (10 years and therefore many official and unofficial fixes and service packs, Windows 98SE is really pretty stable. I also rather like the user interface (even some of the eyecandy, such as sliding menus), and it's compatible with quite a few programs (at least the necessities, such as word processing, up to date web browsing, nearly up to date flash and java, audio stuff, etc.) idk. I like this system alot. i also wish I had a Windows 98 install cd (i don't think quick restore will cut it, if I get a new hard drive or something.) anyways, yeah. just wanted to speak my mind.
  21. Windows 95 can be installed and used without IE. The shell is a lot less annoying and cluttered. AndrewT sums it up well in his weblog post about Windows 95. Such differences are hardly just a Service Pack. Firefox has an extension called IE tab that basically allows you to switch a tab to be like a window of IE. i think you do need IE installed for it to work though, but whatever. quite unimportant. if I had a windows 95 installation CD, I would definately install it on some partition on some box or other, eventually, but alas, I do not have one. I love that all of the stuff that 95 includes can fit on a tiny little 30mb partition. I'd make mine like at least a gb, though, so as to allow for storage space. I had a Windows 95 laptop (AST Ascentia 810N) that had a 512 mb hardrive (that was expanded to a maybe 1.5 gb by way of DriveSpace 3. It was nice, though without internets. unfortunately, the Screen Died, it lacks a battery, and the powersource plug in required you to plug a powersource in from an angle for it to turn on. a little too janky for my tastes. I still enjoy my 98SE box, though.
  22. My Armada 110 laptop does have Cardbus compatibility, however, for whatever reason, the wireless card it came with (that I use) is a non-cardbus PCMCIA card. Compaq WL110 PC card. look around for it. I can maybe upload the drivers. assuming it's legal and I can find them. The card supports 802.11a and b standards or whatever they're called, and it doesn't have great range or anything, but it works if you're not picky. how large is your Hard Drive Disk? out of curiosity.
  23. I feel so inferior with my 10gb hdd i'm kidding, of course.
