I'm embarrassed for the Microsoft employee who wrote this. "Kick it to the curb" was current slang about the time Windows 95 was out. This is the equivalent of someone in 1985 calling something "groovy" in a attempt to appeal to a younger generation. Modern and revolutionary it's not.

Right tool for the right job. I have an old screwdriver that works. Last year I was given a shiny new screwdriver with a pretty finish. The new screwdriver has batteries to power a light. It has a ratchet assembly with a 5 position switch. It even has rubber thingys on the handle to make sure uneducated users can use it without causing harm. It's big, It's awkward and it slows me down because too many adjustments have to be made before I can get to that task of removing a screw. I'll stick to my old screwdriver.

Most of the apps are complete junk anyway. They're often a plug for their services that most people don't want of (with a big emphasis on making money from them). So it's like having an email spam folder right on the desktop.

I'm looking for solutions and right now I need XP and 7 to do what I have to do for my work. And thanks for the suggestions. I'm determined to get 7 to do what I need.

I would hardly consider this a valid complaint against Windows 7. Halo was released in 2001 with an OS requirement of Windows 98 SE. I recently purchased a DVD of The Wizard of Oz. The movie was released in 1939 and made to run on projectors of that era. If the motion picture industry can re release their classics in original form for modern tech, why can't the software industry? Back to my main point. I received an email suggesting a hack that would allow me to install WMP 11 on Windows 7 but this doesn't make sense to me. VLC has the same problems in 7 as WMP 12 and to me this suggests the problem is with the OS not the players.

My last post on this thread was rather flippant so while I’m sitting here waiting for Spybot to clean my Windows 7 computer (one hour and counting,) I thought I’d chronicle my attempts to make Windows 7 my main home office OS. I previously tried to use 7 on my family home computer but I was unable to get the Microsoft game Halo working on this Microsoft OS. The deal breaker for 7 in my home office is its inability to play all the video formats I need. I work in the entertainment industry and if I can’t play a clients video the client will inevitably find someone who can. Windows 7 with Windows Media Player 12 or VLC 2.0 will play about 80% of the videos that come across my desk. Windows XP with WMP 11 or VLC plays all of them. The XP machine I use is a Pentium 4 with integrated sound and graphics that I picked up on Craigslist for $10.00. Clearly not having the latest and greatest hardware is not the problem. I’ve searched the internet looking for a solution and none of those I’ve found have fixed the problem. I did find a codec that lowered my CPU usage during playback using some very clever code. Unfortunately those same clever programmers managed to bypass my security defenses and sneak some hard to remove adware onto my computer. These codecs also cause Catalyst Control Center to crash intermittently so it’s a no go with these. So until Microsoft or someone else comes up with a solution to this I’ll be doing my job with XP and use the OS with all the flashy thingys for internet surfing and playing mahjong (it does this well, I’ll give it that.)

As compared to what? If it's Apple Works or a poke in the eye with a sharp stick then Windows 7 wins hands down. If it's Windows XP then not so much.

Dell AT101 A little smaller than the IBM Model M and it did come in all black but used ones are expensive. I bought a cream one at a local store for $3.00 and a can of black vinyl dye for $5.00. I only dyed the case so the keys are still white and grey but it looks nice to me. It has Cherry keys so It's almost as loud as the Model M. Like jaclaz, I like a loud keyboard. It's a passive aggressive way of letting everyone in the room know when I'm ticked off.

Thanks for the replies. Experience has taught me that if the problem can't be solved on this forum then it's time to replace the hardware and that's what I did.

I’m having a problem with a Creative Sound Blaster XtremeGamer SB0730. It randomly causes system slowdown and slow booting in Windows XP, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. It’s not software because the problem was fixed by swapping it with an identical card and the card caused the same problem in 3 different motherboards. Nothing appears wrong, no bulging capacitors or burn marks. If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this or a way to fix it, I’d like to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

They also have the X800 Pro/GTO at 509. I'm still using one on one of my machines so I know it's a good card. But either way it would be a sideways move. A video card that is contemporary with the motherboard and processor would be a much better option.

I couldn't find Radeon X800 listed on that link but it does say the Intel i5-2400 s slower than the Radeon 9800 XT and the X800 is faster than the 9800 XT.

Back in the '90's I put a new PSU in a computer without checking the red 115/230 switch on the back. It worked for a while and then I noticed smoke coming out of the back of the computer. I lucked out and only the PSU fried.

The bank I use is still using MS DOS.

Give this a try, it’s helpful with some wifi problems. Go to Start > Run and type gpedit.msc. Under local computer policy select Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\ QoS Packet Scheduler\limit reservable bandwidth. Check enabled and set bandwidth limit to 0.

You said you did a fresh install of Windows XP. A couple of questions: Did you install all the hardware drivers? Did you install the latest DirectX and updates from Microsoft? If you indeed have an SL6WG-D1 processor as Tripredacus said then you don't have the Extreme Edition and there is no L3 cache. I'm using a 3.2 Northwood right now and this machine has no problems what so ever with video so as others said the problem is most likely with software and not hardware. But just to be on the safe side go inside the case and unplug everything pull the ram and then put everything back. Some time things come loose during an upgrade.

As I understand your post you're have two problems, interference from cell phones and distorted sound. Your sound card and speakers are of good quality and should not distort at normal listening levels. For the distorted sound I'd first check with headphones plugged into the sound card to make sure the distortion isn't in the original signal. Then try adjusting the computer volume and the speaker volume up and down opposite each other to see if you can find a point with a cleaner signal. I have yet to hear a computer sound card that didn't distort with the software volume control turned all the way up. And I second VideoRippers sugestion to get some good quality cables to go along with the studio monitors.

Don't overlook pro audio powered near field monitors. Some companies like Behringer and M-Audio make speakers that are comparable in price to consumer speakers. I like Yamaha myself but it's a matter of personal taste so try before you buy.

Try searching for Aureal Vortex 1 (AU8820) chipset or Aureal Vortex 2(AU8830) chipset Windows XP drivers. These drivers might work with your card. I wish you luck in your search. I had to toss two excellent (and expensive) Digital Audio Labs Professional sound cards because the company did not develop Windows XP drivers.

I’ve installed it on 4 computers all running XP. On a hyperthreading cpu and a dual core cpu it worked very well. On a Pentium 4 2.0 and a Pentium III 1.4 it was a disaster. 100% cpu usage, wouldn’t uninstall in safe mode.

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on internet forums and I’ve found an XP theme and a Firefox theme that are a close match to the color schemes used by most forums.
