  1. I wish I had thought of purchasing 2 TDK burners at the time.If I were to buy an external burner do these need to be supported by the operating system too?
  2. I view burners not as durables, but as consumables. I had already several burners which just died after burning maybe 200 DVDs. Only the USB enclosures of my burners are real durables.Given that your burner does work sometimes under Win98 I would exclude hardware incompatibility with Win98 as the cause of your problem. I would defrag the HDD, run ScanDisk, change the cable and try it under WinXP. If the intermittent problems still continue, I would then buy another burner. I was thinking of purchasing another burner, but I think that's when the problems will arise as there aren't many around that support windows 98.
  3. I had no issues under Win98 with an internal LiteOn PATA burner I bought off the shelf at Fry's 4 months ago. My initial guess would be that your burning software, not your hardware, has a compatibility problem under Win98.I am burning CDs/DVDs always under WinXP, not under Win98, it gives me a better burn quality, especially with my 10-year-old 750MHz laptop, for which I use burners in external USB enclosures. I am also using the slowest burning speed possible for a particular media (usually 2x with DVDs), and only media which that specific burner can burn well, as identified afterwards by Nero CD-DVD Speed. Media made in Japan is usually good. About 30% of my DVD burns with my slow laptop are "coasters", i.e. Nero CD-DVD Speed indicates a burn quality of less than 95; my desired target is 97-98. My software didn't have a compatibility problem previously, only started with these errors recently. It seems to be intermittent as I have successfully burned an audio disc at 16 speed with Nero 6 just now.
  4. Which current Dual Layer CD/DVD burner would work with Windows 98 S.E? I ask as my current TDK burner is giving write errors after burning mp3's as an audio CD.
  5. Yeah, I think it was to do with them having a beta version available.
  6. Today I tried to access http://www.captaincrawl.com/index.php which I normally have access to, but for some reason I get a 403 error with the following. Access forbidden! New XAMPP security concept: Access to the requested directory is only available from the local network. This setting can be configured in the file "httpd-xampp.conf". If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster. Error 403 Any ideas on how to fix this?
  7. I'm talking about mostly mp3's, but I suppose I am more concerned about programs that I have currently that work on my 32bit system like Winrar for example. Also say I got a new PC next week, and it had Windows 7, then when HTML5 comes along, how would that be integrated onto my system, if that is possible of course? as I would imagine that the systems at present all use the HTML4.1
  8. Many thanks for the useful info, really appreciated. Would all the files that I have gathered using my current file system which I believe to be 32bit work when transferred to a 64bit system? Sorry if that sounds a crazy question to ask, but the 32 and 64 bits is something I have never really understood. My current system is an AMD Athlon with 256 ram, I did try and add another 256 to it making it 512, but after I had fitted the card to the PCI slot and when I tried to access the internet for some strange reason the internet would then show a message to restart, and when I did the same message appeared again and again like in a loop, so I removed the extra RAM and that solved the problem, so I think it must have been a faulty 256 ram that I had purchased, but it kind of put me off, so I just stayed with the 256 ram, any ideas what may have caused that? Also if I get this guy to custom build me a computer, would I be asking him for an acer, or would the tower just be what he supplies? in other words all these different brands, what is the difference between them all? as I thought it was the motherboard that really mattered, perhaps I'm wrong though.
  9. You're quite right what you say, and I will be looking for a new computer soon. As you seem to be in the know, can you give me some advice as to what to go for regarding computer specifications etc, such as Dual core, and processor type. I usually only use a computer for the following....MP3's converting & playing, copying CD's, making up custom artwork, and playing the odd game of pool on yahoo. I'm not really into playing on-line games, well apart from the yahoo pool that I mentioned. So in essence I am looking for a large hard drive, plenty of memory, and a desktop PC rather than a laptop as I am more used to working with a desktop. I know someone that can make me up a custom built computer without all the bloated software that you get when you buy one from a PC store. And of course I would need Office, so I don't know if he can give me this included in the package. Oh and not sure what the best brand of computer either, such as Dell or Compaq. I have to say that MESH components haven't really let me down in 10 years.
  10. Please let me answer that, the SAS version I use is the last version that works with my operating system, and this has been confirmed by SAS. So 4.35 would be of no use to me or anyone using win98.
  11. Can you play anything or nothing from the ITV Player? at http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/ I can get like Emerdale to play, but it's very slow.
  12. Yeah I agree. What I was really asking was if those later systems dealt with ripping CD's to Flac etc. I would never convert mp3 to flac, no point as you say.
  13. Apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I had heard that Windows Vista doesn't work that well for converting personal mp3 to wave or flac, is this the case? I am asking because I will be getting a new computer soon, and as I do converting some of the time I would like to know if that is possible within Vista? This of course is for my personal use only.
  14. I think it must be a new PC for me.
  15. Ok, but please try this as it tells me I need Flash Player 10. http://www.itv.com/lifestyle/thismorning/showbiz/clivemantleastommycooper/
  16. I am unable to view the ITV Net Player as Flash Player 10 is required, but unfortunately Flash Player 9 is the last install for windows 98, and version 10 isn't allowed on the 98 system. Is there anyway round this to fool the installer what the operating system is, or will 98 just be incapable of working on 98?
  17. My version of SAS SAS 4.24.1004 has recently picked up the following....... Adware.Vundo/Variant-X32[Header] and it was residing in C:\WINDOWS\U2X00_32.DLL Is this a false positive would you think? I ask as the properties show a date when I installed windows 98, so I wouldn't have thought it was adware, but we never know. I have restored it but I wonder if that was the right thing to do. I may remove it again and see if it causes any problems by doing so, then if it does I can restore it back again. Of course to see this file in C:Windows you therefore need to have the show all files enabled in folder options.
  18. I happened to remove an .xml icon that appeared in the C:\WINDOWS\UserData folder, and I am sure it was called something like iconstate, and the reason I removed it was my picture icons where showing as a cable upstream icon instead of my normal photosuite icon. I would have perhaps restored this but for some reason I had already emptied the re-cycle bin. Is it safe to delete the folders that appear in C:\WINDOWS\UserData on Windows 98 S.E?In other words is it safe to remove these .xml extensions? Also I had read somewhere that by changing the settings for the typical role of this computer to Network Server instead of Desktop Computer it would give me more memory space, have you heard that?
  19. How do I tell if the swap file is on or off? I have heard about this swap file before and always wondered what and where it is on Windows 98 S.E
  20. Is it safe to delete the folders that appear in C:\WINDOWS\UserData on Windows 98 S.E? I thought perhaps that if they were put to the bin that when they system reloaded it would start them again, but no, any ideas?
  21. Sorry, but can you please explain how I check about the CLSID?
  22. Hello to everyone.

  23. A friend gave me a link to listentomyradio, and it has 2 options to listen, one is an embedded Windows Media Player, and the other is Flash, and although the Flash works fine the Windows Media Player doesn't, and I have tried various config but to no avail. It used to work fine but it doesn't anymore. I use I.E 6 and also FF 2.0.0.20 I use these due to OS requirements. Is there anything I need to do to get this to stream and play on the WMP?
  24. Thanks, Not sure about that prog, I prefer to use the add/remove programs for deleting files, and I wonder then if it's safe to delete the 1.3 to 1.5 updates by that method? What I see in the add/remove program list is the following...let me know if this looks normal. I did have the 1.5.0.22, but I got rid of it because I didn't think it was needed being that I have version 6. J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 14 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 15 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 Java6 Update 3 Java6 Update 6
