  1. RP9/KEx4 Me/98SE2ME conflict fixed as of RP 9.0.10 refresh! I get an Access Violation in RPCONFIG.EXE at BFE50496 address BFE51496 read addresss FFFFFFFF. But this is when trying to run RPConfig, and only when I have KernelEX 4.0 RC2 installed. I cannot configure or remove RP9 until I have first removed KEx 4.0 RC2. See here for more details of my RP9/KEx problems: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=844937 I can still run either RP9 or KEx4 individually without a problem and have been alternating since their releases. I would so like to run them together...
  2. Microtek's scanners currently support Windows 9x, and they are also updating the drivers. I'm using ScanWizard 5 v6.61, released February 2009 in Windows 98SE. So, if anyone needs a scanner that works in Windows 98/SE/Me, then Microtek is the answer.
  3. Welcome the the forum montech! Do I understand correctly from your topic title and post, that you are running an MS-DOS windows within Windows 95? If this is the case, then the Windows mouse driver will emulate a DOS mouse driver for any DOS windows. If a DOS application detects the mouse driver (emulated), then it will enable the mouse functions and the mouse 'cursor' character will appear on the screen. You would need to look at the settings of the DOS application to attempt to disable the mouse usage. If the DOS application works as a window rather than full screen (Alt-Enter), then it will not display an additional cursor.
  4. Here's the current release of the Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...ee-6583171b4530 The main download is SpeechSDK51.exe. This will install the core speech synthesizer and speech recognition engines. There are some sample apps that are quite useful. Any software that uses the Microsoft Speech API can use the engines from this install.
  5. Hi MDGx, what has changed is that this topic is no longer a sticky in the Important Topics section of the Windows 9x Member Projects Forum.
  6. It is long winded indeed! If someone has the time to create an automated version, either as a batch script or executable, then feel free! As long as the automated version backs up every file as it goes, and has some way at DOS level to undo the changes in case of failure. I had thought of doing it myself, but it took so long to establish the required changes, and I have not got the time at the moment. I suppose it also depends on how many people are still using Revolutions Pack 7, and have had it installed for some time, where a roll-back of Windows from using the RP7 Uninstall would be a major! Or those who more likely have installed RP7 upgrades over a previous install and therefore rendered their RP uninstallable...
  7. Note: There was another topic started, but is now defunct: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120479 Some that we know about already: Mozilla Firefox 3 Adobe Flash 10 (plugin) OpenOffice.org 3.0 Java Developer Kit 6 Java Runtime Environment 6 Google Picasa 3 PDF-XChange Viewer Doom 3 Quake 4 Prey Need for Speed: Most Wanted The Chronicles of Riddick EFBB Demo QEmu 0.9 Also Adobe Reader 7.0.9. How to install: Download: http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/read...dr709_en_US.exe - Set AdbeRdr709_en_US.exe Compatibility mode to Windows 2000 - Execute AdbeRdr709_en_US.exe - Installer unpacks files and then fails. - Browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files\RdrBig709\ENU - Using Orca, make the following changes to Adobe Reader 7.0.9.msi: - Drop row UnSupportedOS (Version9x) from both InstallExecuteSequence and InstallUISequence - Execute setup.exe - Remove Adobe Reader Speed Launch from the Startup menu to prevent problems. - If Acrobat Reader 6 or Acrobat 6 is installed, then run an install repair. This is to repair the Adobe Shell Extensions. The reason for this is that pdfshell.dll from 7.x is not compatible with Windows 9x and causes long hangs in Windows Explorer anytime there are PDF files in the current folder and you click on them... - Then repair each Acrobat Reader 6/Acrobat 6 update in order (assuming all updates are installed): -- Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update -- Adobe Interactive Forms Update SP1 -- Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.3 Update -- Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.4 Update -- Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.5 Update -- Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.6 Update If you don't have a copy of Acrobat Reader or Acrobat already installed, then you will have to manually remove the following registry keys: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F9DB5320-233E-11D1-9F84-707F02C10627} HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Acrobat.AcroAXDoc.1 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.7 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ColumnHandlers\{F9DB5320-233E-11D1-9F84-707F02C10627} If Adobe Reader 7.0 is not default, the use right-click Open With and select Adobe Reader 7.0 or make it the default.
  8. So there it is in a nutshell! To paint a picture: If the shell in Windows 9x was replaced by a single application and then Windows started, it would be like running an app on a NT OS... All the resource heaps exclusively available to that app. There is a significant architectural difference between shared heaps and per app heaps...
  9. Nice work Xeno86 (and Tihiy). In KernelEx 0.3.x, I had a problem with Norton Disk Doctor taking a long time to run a check: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=753184 In KernelEx 4.0, this problem is gone, no more, history! It's a beautiful piece of enhancement software! 4.0 is faster than 0.3.6, and it does not modify system file binaries (aside from kernel32.dll). BTW, is there a KernelEx 4 install log file somewhere?
  10. RP9/KEx4 Me/98SE2ME conflict fixed as of RP 9.0.10 refresh! I have been running KEx 4.0 RC2. Same problem with RP9/KEx4. I attempted to run Dr Watson... It starts okay, but when the above mentioned crash occurs, Dr Watson starts logging the fault and then crashes itself (no error and no log). After this, the Windows Shell is very unstable and soon hangs up completely with no chance of rescue with the three-finger-salute. However, the mouse pointer still moves around, so it looks like the Windows Kernel is okay (me thinks? - strange that Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work...) Currently I'm running with only KernelEx 4.0 RC2 and all is good... Revolutions Pack 9 also works well on it's own... But together... Some kind of conflict... If I do not run NPROTECT.EXE (Norton Protected Recycle Bin) at all with both RP9 and KEx4, I get crashes very soon in Explorer or something else. Every time its a page fault in module <unknown>. This leads me to conclude that it's not specifically a problem relating to Norton Utilities, but more a general conflict with RP9 and KEx4. Individually, RP9 and KEx4 are really awesome! Keep up the great work Tihiy - doing wonders to Windows 9x! You mean Norton Utilities 2005, right? Yes and no... I've changed the original post - see quote above which is more correct. The actual Norton Utilities files are almost the same as Norton Utilities 2002, but with some tweaks/fixes and new version numbers in some files... Symantec really did very little with Norton Utilities after 2002 when they bundled it with SystemWorks, so I always think of 2002 as the last real change... Technically of course I'm wrong...
  11. That is exactly what has been bugging me for years! Windows 2000 onwards will run many of the apps that run on 9x. However, they don't have the same kind of resources issues. So... It is technically possible... Whether it could be done is quite another problem. I expect it would require extensive modifications to the Windows kernel...
  12. Hi hpj2, Try installing DirectX 9.0c December 2006 release (last officially supported on Windows 98SE): http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/c...2006_redist.exe What version of nVidia drivers are you using? The last version of drivers for the TNT2 was 71.84: http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/71.84/7...ternational.exe
  13. Thanks Tihiy for your stamp of approval. May Windows 9x live long and prosper!
  14. Revolutions Pack 9 works like a well oiled machine! nVidia compatibility fixed as of RP 9.0.9! The fix for nVidia 32-bit icons is: 1. Run dxdiag and perform one of the full screen Display tests. 2. Change the RP System icon set and Apply (change back if needed). RP9/KEx4 Me/98SE2ME conflict fixed as of RP 9.0.10 refresh! I have however, found a (another) conflict between Revolutions Pack 9 and KernelEx 4.0 RC1: When I install just RP9, everything works with no problem. When I then install KernelEx 4.0 RC1, Norton Protected Recycle Bin from Norton Utilities (18.0.3.11) in Norton SystemWorks 2005 crashes with an invalid page fault in module <unknown>. Shortly after this, Explorer will have a BSOD and recovery is not possible. If I install KernelEx on it's own, it works with no problem. If I then install Revolutions Pack 9, RP9 does not work properly (as alerted at install time). When I deinstall and reinstall KernelEx as suggested by RP9 install message, I'm back to the same crash... I'm not sure if it's a conflict caused by RP or KEx.
  15. WARNING These instructions could potentially render your Windows 98SE unusable. It is highly recommended to have a full backup of your Windows folder before proceeding! Also, make individual file backups for each and every file you delete or overwrite. Store these backup files in folders off the root that you can easily get to from DOS for recovery. I was prevented from starting Windows several times while creating this proceedure. I could roll-back file changes (in DOS) from my BACKUP files I had made. So, I still have a working Windows 98SE! You have been warned! And by the way: *** Do NOT use the Add/Remove entry to uninstall Revolutions Pack 7!!! If you do, you will roll-back Windows to the time of the Revolutions Pack install!!! This will effectively make newer software installs unusable and remove any newer settings. Also, if you have ever installed Revolutions Pack 7 over the top of an existing install, then the C:\WINDOWS\revbckup backup files are useless anyway... But hey! If you want to time travel, then sure, be my guest! Use Add/Remove! Just do it! (Oh wait, those words are trademarked - D'oh) Note: If your Windows 98SE is not installed in C:\WINDOWS, then please substitute references below with your current Windows folder. >> This is NOT for the faint hearted! << >> Do not attempt this if you are not comfortable doing it! << *** There are reg files to create along the way to make registry changes easier *** Just copy the given text (in code box) to Notepad and save to a .reg file. Run file. After performing these steps, you should be back to Windows 98SE without Revolutions Pack 7 (but still with Windows Me Explorer and Shell). If you are not in fact at your Windows 98SE desktop, then something did not work. No problem - from DOS, just copy back the backup files you made (you DID make backup files right?) Then simply install Revolutions Pack 9! ...and rock on dude! Steps to manually remove Revolutions Pack 7 from your Windows 98SE install: - Set Windows Display Scheme and Desktop Theme to Windows Standard - Run RPConfig and turn off LameSkin - Remove or move these C:\WINDOWS folders (and files): revbckup Resources - I am now running Revolutions Pack 9. However, there may be some overlooked file or setting, or some difference with your Windows 98SE system that causes problems, and therefore, I cannot make any guarantee that you will be able to complete these steps. In simple terms, you are solely responsible if your Windows 98SE implodes, taking with it the western spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy! You have been warned to backup each and every file you replace or delete. If you do/did not heed this warning and cannot roll-back any changes you made, then please, do have a wonderful time re-installing Windows! I've done the hard work, so enjoy!
  16. Hi folks! Just to get my 7% USER resources increase in perspective... Without RP or UberSkin, I had 77% USER resources free and 97% GDI resources free... I always trim down unneeded startup apps. With RP9 installed, I get 84% USER resources free and 97-98% GDI resources free (It sits at 97%, but sometimes it's 98% - I never saw it above 97% without RP9...) I know Tihiy thinks this kind of increase is bad (from a technical viewpoint), but I think it's good! So, to conclude, it would appear that RP9 is doing good things by freeing wasted resources.
  17. Okay, RP9 officially ROCKS! No change in GDI, but USER resources went UP 7% from no RP to after installing RP9!!! That is so ultimately awesome! It was the USER resources that I always had a problem with. Testing so far is all good. One question: The option Replace default system font with Tahoma... What should the outcome of this be? It would appear that more menu and window text is using ClearType... But there is still some text that is not... I would guess that in this case, the font is being requested specifically, like MS Sans Serif for example. Maybe a font translation could take place to replace font requests for raster fonts with similar outline fonts? Add-on request: RP7 had an option for the Desktop to automatically snap icons to a grid... Any chance of this being implemented in RP9? (one has to ask...) A BIG thanks Tihiy for yet another superlative Windows 9x enhancement tool - I LIKE! BTW, I formulated a fully manual removal of RP7 back to a clean non-RP Windows 98SE. I successfully performed the delicate operation with no loss of settings or registry roll back and I'm now running RP9! So that RP7 users can move to RP9, I'll post all the scary details in a new topic shortly. EDIT: RP7 users see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=131353
  18. That's not good! Any chance of a community patch? We could call it rloew's FDISK Patch.
  19. Windows 98SE comes with some old WMI 1.1 files, so, yes, WMI 1.5 will want to upgrade these. WMI 1.5 allows many information tools to read details from your motherboard and other components properly (via SMBIOS and other means). For example, the DirectX 9 DXDiag tool will correctly show the motherboard information on the first page. There are a few post-1.5 WMI updates too: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=260710 Download: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q260710.EXE http://support.microsoft.com/?id=282949 Download: http://www.mdgx.com/files/KB282949.EXE http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289514 Download: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q289514.EXE
  20. Yeah, I thought about that one... But the files copy without a problem on the local drives... It's only a problem when copying via Microsoft Networking (over TCP/IP)...
  21. I have discovered an interesting problem. I think it's a bug somewhere in Windows 98SE. I have a large file (10GiB) that is spanned over several files (created on 98SE). Each spanned part is 4GiB-512 bytes (4,294,966,784 bytes). I have no problem copying these large files around on the local drives... However, recently I have made a complete backup of my 98SE files onto a NTFS share on a Windows XP SP3 PC. Files of all sizes copied with no problem, 3GiB for example, nearly 200GiB of files... However, when I was copying the 4GiB-512 bytes files, Windows 98SE hard locked (mouse stuck etc) on the last 65024 bytes (63.5KiB) So, only 4GiB-65536 bytes (4,294,901,760 bytes) copied. I've tried quite a number of times but with the same result... That to me sounds like an internal overflow or some other internal problem in Windows 98SE... What I've tested: 1. Copy 4GiB-512 bytes file using Windows Explorer on local drive - okay - WinDiff compare okay 2. Copy 4GiB-512 bytes file using Windows Explorer to network share - hard lock - Windiff compare mismatch (after reboot) 3. Copy 4GiB-512 bytes file using xcopy in DOS VM to network share - hard lock - file smaller by 65024 bytes 4. Copy 4GiB-512 bytes files using Windows Explorer from network share - okay - WinDiff compare mismatch 5. Copy 4GiB-65536 bytes files using Windows Explorer to network share - okay - WinDiff compare okay 6. Copy 4GiB-65536 bytes files using Windows Explorer from network share - okay - WinDiff compare okay The reason tests 2 and 4 mismatch and test 3 is smaller, is because Windows Explorer preallocates the file even if the data fails to finish copying. From these tests it would appear that reading or writing is failing to copy the last 64KiB of data just below 4GiB... It's the first time I've seen this kind of hard lock while copying a file, but it's also the first time I've tried to copy such a large file to a network share... My Windows 98SE has all available updates installed that I know of. Many people say that the absolute file size limit in Windows 98SE is 4GiB-1 byte. This is presumably because the FAT32 file system has this limit. However, NTFS and therefore access to NTFS network shares have been around well before Windows 98/SE/Me existed. So, the potential to access very large files has also been there. Windows Explorer and Windows 98SE's internal file system support can easily display file lengths and data sizes over 4GiB on a network share, so why can't it manipulate them??? There is obviously internal support for 64-bit data sizes... I've had a look at the Win32 API functions related to file access. The CopyFile and MoveFile APIs only require source and destination filenames and do not indicate any file size. ReadFile, ReadFileEx, WriteFile, and WriteFileEx all use 64-bit file position pointers back to Windows 95. (Hehe) It looks like Vista (and XP - see comments) have their share of large file copy problems: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/

  23. Anyone that happens to be using Symantec AntiVirus 9.x Corporate (and Enterprise) Edition will have a problem after the end of this month... Symantec is retiring SAV 9.x Corporate/Enterprise Editions with End-Of-Life as March 31, 2009. From then on, they will no longer release legacy definitions. See the notes at the top of this page: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_...l.jsp?gid=savce As a side note, it appears that all remaining 9x compatible antivirus vendors will be dropping support for Windows 9x at the end of this year. EDIT March 8: According to this Avast! Forum topic, it looks like at least Avast! will be supporting their current 4.8 version for 9x users for some time to come...
  24. Nice! Works well. Get ActiveX here: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flash...player_9_ax.exe Also, Flash 10.0.22.87 Plugin and Standalone are available. The v10 Plugin can be installed into Firefox using this post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=767664 I'm also running the 10.0.22.87 Standalone player in 98SE okay. Plugin 10.0.22.87 from here: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe I have KernelEx installed, so I'm not sure if v10 works without KernelEx. Can anyone confirm this? If there are install issues that require a clean install, then download the Flash uninstaller for both ActiveX and Plugin: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...lash_player.exe
  25. And yet Adobe still released another Flash 9.x update for 9x... See here for Flash 9.0.151.0: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb406791 The version listed on the "official" flash download page is 9.0.124.0 which has various vulnerabilities(!)
