  1. And you were on a roll too! The performance has improved with your second update and is actually barely noticable for general use! After a day's use, I no longer notice it at all... What I do notice, like XP-Vista-7, is that reading on-screen is much easier on the eyes! I'll test your third update just to see if there is any performance change. I noticed on Philco's last screenshot, that his window title bar text is using ClearType. Even though mine are using a TrueType font, they are not using ClearType??? I am not using UberSkin, but RP instead, so I wonder if that is the reason? Also, I currently do not have a skin applied with LameSkin. - I thought this was odd. I still think it is worth continuing with ClearType, at least as an option, since many people would wear the small performance hit for the sake of excellent screen readability. So my verdict is: Keep up the good work! Thanks Tihiy
  2. Wow So fast I'm still spinning! That has to be the fastest bug fix in programming history! All reported problems fixed and working beautifully I noticed that 16-bit apps like Notepad, do not use ClearType either, no matter what font is selected... Maybe it's possible to create some kind of Thunker to allow 16-bit apps to benefit from ClearType? Perhaps also have options to translate raster fonts to TrueType fonts to allow most menus to use ClearType? One new problem I've noticed... Text in Internet Explorer's Favorites menu seems to randomly go bold, but not always all the lines of text... Sometimes just some lines of text in Favorites or a sub-menu... This is the REAL DEAL! Genuine ClearType in Windows 9x!
  3. NDD.EXE is the DOS version. NDD32.EXE is the Windows GUI version. This one you can go to Properties, Version. It's normally sitting under C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities
  4. Hmm... I had reservations about 98Lite and the Shell update... The update only updates SHELL32.DLL, so nothing else has been changed. Because EXPLORER.EXE, SHELL32.DLL, and USER32.DLL are all linked, you would have to use the 98 Explorer/Shell to get the fix. I'm not sure what the solution would be for 98Lite...
  5. Yeah, missed that info... I am not running UberSkin, but I do have RP 7.11 installed. 6. I had a look and it appears to be only Pocket PC devices listed... BTW MD, The Windows XP SP3 USBSTOR.INF adds three more Sony Memory Stick Reader/Writer devices, and also a Casio Digital Camera device.
  7. Tihiy: You ROCK! I never thought I'd see my desktop and apps looking like XP with ClearType! I already had my appearance fonts set to Tahoma, so ClearType immediately improved most text. What I've found: I have a problem in Word too, but XP (2002). When I type, nothing appears... If I select the invisible text and reapply a text colour, it appears until I type again, and then that line goes invisible again. I tried several standard fonts (Tahoma, Times New Roman, Verdana). As has been mentioned by others, I also have spacing problems. Letters (at least western script), are wider with ClearType enabled (actually it appears they are bolder, so a little bigger). The problem is that the spacing does not change in some cases so the letters become squashed together, particularly Internet Explorer. For example, the link text at the bottom of a Google web page is too close together. This is also evident if you type in the search box on the Google web page. The text will overtake the cursor... On some web pages, the text will space correctly meaning that it gets truncated on the right or extends too far. It's almost as if the text size needs to drop half a point... (like 12 -> 11.5?) It would appear that in Windows XP, the correct text sizing with ClearType enabled is returned to the app, whereas currently 9x does not seem to be aware of the changes? Or maybe they are not filtered through to the app? Of course without knowing what your expert little DLL does, this is all pure speculation! Spacing of other script types like Chinese, Japanese, and Russian appear okay. Also, some non-alphanumeric characters like ' and ® sometimes appear as an outline square with ClearType. This was evident for Philco in CorelDRAW 8 with some non-latin and accented characters. There is a small performance hit, but this is to be expected. My PC: PIII 866, 1GiB+ RAM, 256MB nVidia FX video, 293 fonts installed (including raster). Overall, it's a fantastic piece of work! I look forward to any possible improvements! Thanks Tihiy.
  8. It's a MAJOR Microsoft bug in Windows 9x... Microsoft tried their absolute best to sweep in under the carpet... However, it has been fixed. See this topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=84451 I'm not sure how it will work with a 98Lite set-up... Also consider many other updates available in packs: See here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815 Many are official Microsoft updated files, but some are member and others contributed fixes. - all well tested by us! Welcome to MSFN One of the last standing outposts for Windows 9x!
  9. Thanks Lecco. A video file could be a good idea since I can visually check if it's all there or if it wraps.
  10. I feel that this is worth bumping this topic even if it is nearly a year old! The full version of Paragon NTFS for Win98 3.0.2.2 is currently available free of charge for read/write access. NTFS for Win98 uses a single VxD solution with no dependancies on Microsoft NT files. If is designated for non-commercial use only: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-win98/ I've been testing it and so far it works well. The installer warns you to disable Recycle Bin on the NTFS drive in Windows 9x. If you don't, like I didn't, the Recycle Bin on the NTFS drive becomes corrupt and causes minor NTFS file system errors that requires chkdsk /f run from Windows XP. I was mainly interested in access to files over 4GiB in size. Windows Explorer in 9x displays file sizes correctly when over 4GiB, but if you try to copy an over 4GiB file, it truncates the copy (remainder of file size divided by 4GiB). From a command prompt, dir only lists a truncated file size, and the copy command only copies the truncated size. xcopy fails with Warning: File too large to be copied I have not yet devised a method of testing if an application can read the whole file, or whether it gets truncated, or wraps at the 4GiB point... If anyone has any good ideas or some kind of testing tool to check access to over 4GiB files on an external file system on 9x, then please speak up! (or is that post up?)

  12. Actually the latest update of NDD32.EXE from Norton SystemWorks 2005 is 18.0.3.11. Maybe this version will fix some of your issues? To update just Norton Utilities to 8.03, download: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_....03/PatchNu.exe LiveUpdate never seems to update Norton SystemWorks 2005 to 8.02 or 8.03... To update Norton SystemWorks 2005 to 8.02, see step 3 of this page: Updating Norton SystemWorks 2005 to version 8.02 To then update to 8.03 see... Huh? The support page in english has been purged from Symantec's knowledgebase... A common occurance with Symantec... Grrr... Thanks to The Wayback Machine: Updating Norton SystemWorks 2005 to version 8.03 see section To download the Norton SystemWorks 2005 updater * Please note: To download updates on this page from Symantec, copy the download link and remove http://web.archive.org/web/20060220235820/ from the front of the url, then paste into your browser. The FTP update links are for english, but the Symantec FTP site has other language updates as well.

  14. Generally LCD monitors work best at 60Hz refresh rate. Even if the monitor supports other refresh rates, they generally give a poorer picture. If you are not using a DVI connection to your PC, but using analog VGA, then the monitor needs to be synchronised to the PC video signal. There is normally an Auto button or menu option on the monitor to auto-sync the signal. If the LCD monitor is out of sync with the signal, then it will give a worse picture and may cause eye discomfort. The other aspect to consider is the native resolution of the monitor. Using a lower resolution on the PC will result in an interpolated blurry picture. For example, your 19" LCD probably has a native resolution of 1280x1024. Hope this helps.
  15. Has anyone tested, or does anyone know if any of the WIA files including INFs from Windows XP SP3 work on 98SE? Even the INFs could be adapted to 98SE to increase the number of supported devices - especially newer devices...
  16. A few things with AP Dec 2008: - Anvir Task Manager Free 4.9.0 installs even when I select to by-pass... It did however correctly detect that I had a newer version installed. The current version is 5.4.1: http://www.download.com/AnVir-Task-Manager...2_4-187812.html It still works nicely in 9x. - kb951072 (Aug 2008 Time Zones) is looping - I already had it installed, although I don't think this is the problem... - The Windows Update Fix is still listed in Manual Installs index.rtf file. Change Requests (Codecs): - Xvid Codec 1.2.1: http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html - AC3Filter Codec 1.51a: http://ac3filter.net/project/1/releases These two codecs are probably the most useful to have in Windows 98SE. Thanks Sop for pulling together the fastest AP release ever! 9x'ers are certainly a dying breed, but still alive and kicking for now! Let's see if 2009 can be another year for 9x - Windows 98 Second Edition turns 10 years old in exactly 4 months! (April 23, 2009) Actually, MS update binaries have been quite good in 9x most of this year - it's almost as if... Nah, no one at Micro$oft is on our side... More Change Requests (Useful tools): - PowerArchiver 6.11 (last freeware version): http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/fi...powerarc611.zip - CCleaner 2.15: http://www.ccleaner.com/ - Paragon NTFS for 98: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-...8/download.html
  17. Java up to version 6 update 7 will co-exist with other Java versions. If you use Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Program Files\Java (assuming Windows is on C:), you will see a folder for each Java install. In most cases, you can safely de-install old Java versions from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. * Never delete folders directly from \Program Files - always use the software's uninstaller. As a side note, starting with Java 6 update 10, Java will always default to \Program Files\Java\jre6. So for example, installing Java 6 update 11 will replace Java 6 update 10 including the Add/Remove Programs entry. However, currently update 10 and 11 will not install on 9x...
  18. I had the same problem... AP could not resolve the environment space problem without adding SHELL=COMMAND.COM /E:4096 /P to CONFIG.SYS. However, after rebooting, the AP window would appear, and Bad command or filename would flash up, then the window would close. What I found was that COMMAND.COM in C:\ was marked as System and Hidden... After running attrib c:\command.com -s -h, and rebooting, I was able to get to the AP menu. I was still getting multiple Out of environment space errors in the System Tweaks section... So I tried increasing values in the SHELL= line (8192, 16384, 32768), and restarting each time. These higher values reduced the Out of environment space to just one error in the System Tweaks section. Either way, the fantastic AP scripts would fail. The only solution was to temporarily empty AUTOEXEC.BAT (with or without the SHELL= line in CONFIG.SYS). Another interesting problem I found was also in System Tweaks. I had the following lines in SYSTEM.INI: [vcache] ;;;MaxFileCache=65536 MaxFileCache=101376 System Tweaks would find the current value for MaxFileCache as he=65536 (corrupt)... However, if I swapped lines: [vcache] MaxFileCache=101376 ;;;MaxFileCache=65536 System Tweaks would find the current value for MaxFileCache as 101376 (correct).
  19. Hi soporific, I'm not aware that MDGx has any update for this. The hotfix can be downloaded (via free request) from the KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906216/en-us I expect maximus decim did this to compile his updater. However, it would need to be compiled into a standalone updater for 9x.
  20. Updated: December 17, 2008 Thanks to Eck, for the following additions: - Added Pure DOS Drivers 2000 release - Added official support for SB0100 - PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0002&SUBSYS_80621102 (INF change only) - Added official support for SB0102 - PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0002&SUBSYS_80641102 (INF change only) See First post. Ha! It's taken me four months to finally look through the drivers Eck uploaded! Just goes to show how busy/disconnected/uninterested/disillusioned/vacant/bored (you choose) I've been lately! Anyway, a big thanks to Eck for the drivers. Actually some of the VxD files were older, but there was some good INF material to use! And finally I've acquired a newer Pure DOS SB16 Emulation driver set for the Live! (however, there is an even newer 2001 release somewhere...) FYI, I'm still looking at Audigy drivers. I've got a 2003 set of VxD drivers for Live!/Audigy, but they remove a lot of old functionality. This causes some of the demo apps like SBLive! Experience and others to no longer work. The driver structure is totally different and would require a complete removal of the current drivers and applets before installing. I'll probably only include them for the Audigy series since the Live! part of the drivers changes too much. Stay tuned... B)
  21. That may be the case, but if you don't already have the drivers for 9x, then you won't get them from HP anymore... HP have pulled all 9x drivers from their website some time ago, although they left the Windows 3.x drivers!!! - Go figure??? So much for post sales support from HP! The problem is that HP are in bed with M$, and when M$ say jump, HalfPie jumps! Here's HP's official statement: ALERT! Printer Driver Support for Windows 98/ME Effective December 31, 2006 HP support for Windows 98/ME will end. - No further support of the HP traditional print drivers for Windows 98/ME will be provided. - No further development or enhancements of the printer drivers for Windows 98/ME will be completed. - No support for defect resolution of the printer drivers for Windows 98/ME will be provided. Effective June 30, 2007 all Windows 98/ME printer drivers will be removed from hp.com: - HP’s licensing agreement with third-party providers granting use of their components will expire. - Basic support for your HP product will be available through the use of prior printer or ‘legacy’ printer drivers. Hewlett-Packard will provide Windows 98/ME drivers for a very limited number of HP LaserJet low-end printers introduced Spring and Fall 2006. HP's currently available drivers for Windows 2000 and later are the recommended drivers for all supported HP printers from January 1, 2007 forward. Background Microsoft discontinued Windows 98/ME shipments in June 2002/2003 respectively. HP’s Windows 98/ME driver discontinuance is directly related to the fact that there is no longer Microsoft resources allocated to issue management. Blah, blah, blah, yes Microsoft, as you wish Microsoft, of course I'll jump over that really large cliff Microsoft... Epson on the other hand still produce 9x drivers for their consumer printer range, and you will always be able to download existing drivers! I've always had Epson printers since the earliest dot matrix days. Go Epson!
  22. soporific, another two for the incompatible list: kb955069 (MS08-069 955218) MSXML3.DLL (8.100.1048.0) does not work. It causes application errors... (kb308480+kb924191 last to work okay) kb941833 (MS07-042 936181) MSXML4.DLL (4.20.9849.0) does not work. XML 4 simply does not do anything... Broken... (kb954430 now works okay) EDIT 1: Also, Adobe have released a security update to Flash 9 (9.0.151.0) - thanks thydreamwalker! It's not currently available via the standard Flash download link on the Adobe page... However, it is available from an Adobe TechNote: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb406791 All versions of Adobe Flash Player (including Standalone Flash Player) are available from the Archived Flash Players page: http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14266 The Flash 10 Netscape plugin for Firefox, Opera and so on, can be made to install on 9x. See: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=767664 EDIT 2: Well, that's interesting! The Standalone Flash Player 10.0.12.36 works with no problem in Windows 9x (to play swf and other files)... In fact, the readme in the Flash 10 Archived Players zip, states that 9x/Me are valid systems for Flash 10... So... Why then does the Flash 10 ActiveX and Plugin not install on 9x? (I'll leave the answer to the conspiracy theorists!) At least Tihiy worked out how to fool the Flash 10 Plugin to install, but so far the Flash 10 ActiveX will not install. Worse, it first removes Flash 9, and then half installs Flash 10... Hmm. EDIT 3: For some reason I now get hardware acceleration that I have never had with Flash Player... Thinking it was 9.0.151.0, I tested 9.0.124.0 again, and it too works... I've never been able to play full screen Flash Video (FLV) without seeing the frames drawing down the screen and getting an unusable frame rate. Now it's awesome, and I don't know why! Six weeks ago when I installed Flash 10 plugin for Firefox, it would not do hardware acceleration, and now it works too... This list is in no way complete, but is a start.
  24. Of course you meant 2.4... Great work maximus-decim - keeping the security concerns of 9x'ers under control! And thanks MDGx for the mirror.
  25. Well, I've been running the MSXML 4 SP2 update MS08-069 (Q954430) and for the first time since MS06-071 (Q927978), MSXML 4 appears to be behaving itself... See original post here. I could not get the couple of updates since 927978 to work on my 98SE... This latest one is a goodie! I've yet to test out a few of the recent updates... But I'll get around to it. Great work MDGx Oh, BTW, I tested MSXML 3 SP10 (MS08-069 955069)... It does not work like it's previous SP9 update... Just crashes applications and services with application errors... There's a newer GDI+ security update 938464 (MS08-052 954593) with gdiplus.dll version 5.1.3102.5581 for Windows XP SP3. Seems to work fine in 9x. I find that if I copy the new gdiplus.dll file to Windows\System and then delete all other copies from Program Files and Windows, then I only have the lastest security update version. It saves installing many updates for many pieces of software.
