  1. Yes it was mildly interesting. Another example of commercial closed-source bloat-ware!
  2. As the previous three posts have discussed, beta2 (9.1.2) is more unstable than beta1 (9.1.1). beta1 (9.1.1) is very stable from what I've experienced. Actually, I've been running for a while without the GDI Heap Extender (that is, just RP 9.1.0). During this time, I had a number of occasions where I blew out the Windows resources, especially in Firefox 3.5.5, where I had no problem with beta1 (9.1.1). So... I now have beta1 (9.1.1) installed again and generally more stable than without - probably because of less resource exhaustion crashes.
  3. In fact, I just forced a Win98SE box to update its program, and it now tells me that the Avast! version is 4.8.1368. Good on Avast! I just had a look at the avast! revision history. It appears that they broke 9x support in 4.8.1367 and then fixed it in 4.8.1368. I was using 4.8.1356 and then today updated to 4.8.1368, so I never saw any problems. Well, at least they are currently proactive with 9x compatibility. avast! 4 Home/Professional Revision History Version 4.8.1368 November 27, 2009 - now compatible with Windows 95/98 again Version 4.8.1367 November 25, 2009 - improvements in the malware URL blockers - solved a vulnerability in aswRdr.sys (CVE-2009-4049) (special thanks to Giuseppe Bonfa) Version 4.8.1356 September 25, 2009 - solved a memory leak in the GZIP unpacker - solved vulnerabilities in AavmKer4.sys, aswMon2.sys and ashWsFtr.dll (special thanks to Giuseppe Bonfa, Alex and Maxim A. Kulakov)
  4. With the new rpXbeta2 dr watson is now running all the time, can't find how it is getting loaded to shut it down on startup. Doesn't work with System Tool, and can't find in registry where its loaded? Thanks,Charlie Yeah, the last beta2 is unstable, more so than beta1. So... use rpXbeta1.
  5. As quoted by cure, I showed instructions for installing Adobe Reader 7.0.9. I never did get 7.1.0 or newer to work...
  6. I've tested the KB973688 release of Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 and all looks good. It includes the ANSI Resources file (msxml4a.dll). Direct download: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/2...B973688-enu.exe KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973688 The .msi installer needs to be manually extracted from the .exe package using your fav archiver.
  7. Windows 98 support for Audacity has been discontinued. So... LAST - FREE - Audacity 1.3.7 Beta --- http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_windows#ansi
  8. There is also a DVDFab 6.1.x beta, but I doubt that, and later stable versions, will fully work with 98/Me. Someone will probably have to change the list in this thread to say that DVDFab will only work from version 5.x and earlier (I don't know about early DVDFab 6.x versions though). The last version 5.x (supposedly) of DVDFab is 5.2.5.0 (April 2009). It is available on Old Apps: http://www.oldapps.com/dvdfab.php?old_dvdfab=1
  9. Most motherboard related hardware drivers for Windows 98SE are there. Each driver pack has INF files for various hardware. Read the first post for more information. If you install a new piece of hardware and Windows asks for a driver, you can point to each (extracted) driver pack until it finds the driver, ...or doesn't. Also, in Device Manager, the driver packs can be used to install drivers for unknown devices (if they exist). Some of this topic focuses on using MSBATCH.INF to integrate the driver packs into a Windows 98SE install CD.
  10. Here is a mirror of soporific's Driver Packs: Pack 1 (12.3 MiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029171-3e0 Pack 2 (8.86 MiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029192-a29 Pack 3 (14.5 MiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029208-e50 Pack 4 (1.06 MiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029239-376 Pack 5 (2.33 MiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029246-dba Pack 6 (517 KiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029250-229 Pack 7 (99.7 KiB): http://www.divshare.com/download/9029253-f4b Enjoy!
  11. Read the second post of the KernelEx topic.
  12. sixcentgeorge, some changes to your list. - sesp30b4-en.exe should be first. - DX90C.EXE and ie6setup.exe are installed by AutoPatcher98 - move MPSetup.exe / wmp9 before 98SE2ME.EXE - use rpXbeta1.zip because rpXbeta2.zip is unstable.
  13. I remember having a copy of Outlook 98 downloaded from Microsoft, probably somewhere on a CD in my archives. However, it was always licensed under an existing Office 97 or Outlook 97 license. So, it was intended to upgrade Outlook 97 to Outlook 98.
  14. No mention. They just plain stopped compiling an ANSI version after 0.45! Up until then, they had both ANSI and Unicode versions. I did try the latest Unicode version with KernelEx and it seemed to load to the GUI okay, but I did not test it any further. Actually, I just checked that it would start up to the GUI - sorry. I'll have to test it out properly. The previous version I had was 5.2.3.2. The installer grew about 60% in size between 5.x and 6.x.
  15. You could try the last ANSI (9x) version of the free InfraRecorder 0.45: http://sourceforge.net/projects/infrarecor...si.exe/download BTW, DVDFab 6.0.7.0 seems to work okay for me in 98SE.
  16. You refer to LameSkin. This was replaced by UberSkin, and then by Revolutions Pack 9: http://www.msfn.org/board/revolutions-pack-9-t131040.html I suggest removing LameSkin, and then installing Revolutions Pack 9.
  17. What you need is Revolutions Pack 9: http://www.msfn.org/board/revolutions-pack-9-t131040.html
  18. Well, I've since had a hang in IE6 and a hang in WinDVD - these hangs all required the power button. Also, after some minutes of using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23, the graphics and buttons started to scramble until it was not possible to make out what to click on. I've rolled back to Beta 1 and so far no problems. I've been using Thunderbird for hours selectively transferring, and filing in folders, e-mails from an old webmail account. No problem whatsoever. Beta 1 was very stable, so if it continues to be, then I'll know that the previous issues are Beta 2 and not something else. I'll keep testing with Beta 1 and post results.
  19. I've been using NUSB for some versions. Today I bought a NEC chipset 5-port USB 2.0 seperately powered PCI card to use in place of my VIA USB 1.1 onboard. I plugged the card and power in, and started up Windows 98SE. Taking only a few seconds, the card was detected and installed! All my USB devices now work at MAX speed. NUSB is the best!
  20. Actually, I should have mentioned why I stopped using ibm.com in my test list... In Firefox, after all the tabs (previously saved) loaded up, I would switch through the tabs before reporting the final GDI usage. In Beta 1, when I got to the ibm.com tab, the Flash animation was running (dolphins), but I could no longer change tabs or close Firefox. At this point I had to shutdown and restart Windows. For the sake of completing my testing, I substituted ibm.com with epson.com. Sorry... probably important information?
  21. GDI Heap Extender Beta 2 Testing Using the same tests as Beta 1, I get worse results. Beta 1 (start - during - after): IE: 98 - 45 - 98 FF: 98 - 84 - 98 Beta 2 (start - during - after): IE: 97 - 31 - 95 (note leaked resources) FF: 97 - 82 - 97 I did three tests with IE (always a fresh restart before each test). The first test I left my batch file loading up all the IE sessions (with fifteen second pauses between) and came back about ten minutes later to find that Windows had rebooted and was sitting at the desktop. The second test started to exhaust the GDI Heap and some graphics on web pages were missing. The third test appeared to go okay. I did two Firefox tests with comparible results to Beta 1. I also had several hangs in Microsoft Word 2002 (XP), although I've had this in the past, so I cannot conclusively link it to GDI Heap Extender. It seems to come and go over time, and I've never identified what causes it. It only happens in Word. I do however think that Beta 2 is not as stable as Beta 1. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...
  22. GDI Heap Extender Beta 1 Testing While testing Beta 0 refresh, I've again seen the identical problem above, also in Firefox, although 3.5.2 now. This time, there was only one tab while listing a large number of files on sourceforge.net. No apparent issues in Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and other apps. I have done some shutdowns now, and have once seen a really cool shutdown crash! With Beta 0 refresh, Windows 98SE seems faster - perhaps my imagination? Firstly Tihiy, I'm very sorry for misleading you with the Firefox problem. I've found that the exact same problem occurs with GDI Heap Extender disabled... So, it would appear that this particular problem I have is unrelated to GDI Heap Extender. That being said, Beta 1 is really stable! Good work Tihiy! Test results with Beta 1 (basically the same as Beta 0): Testing with Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Firefox 3.5.2 using the following sites concurrently: (note that this list differs slightly to previous testing in that I've swapped ibm.com for epson.com due to some issues I was having with ibm.com) microsoft.com - msfn.org - symantec.com - avast.com - adobe.com - lenovo.com - amazon.com - ebay.com - mozilla.com - creative.com - epson.com Without GDI Heap Extender IE: starting GDI: 97 - during test: 20 - after closing: 90 FF: starting GDI: 97 - during test: 79 - after closing: 97 With GDI Heap Extender Beta 1 IE: starting GDI: 98 - during test: 45 - after closing: 98 FF: starting GDI: 98 - during test: 84 - after closing: 98 One point to note, is that without GDI Heap Extender, IE does not relinquish all of it's GDI resources. This problem is solved while using GDI Heap Extender Also, with GDI Heap Extender enabled, the free system GDI is slighty higher.
