  2. This project was a test release for RP 9.1.0. Newer RP versions like 9.7.2 replace most of the files from this test release with different and newer builds. So, to directly answer your question, it can only be used with RP 9.1.0. Newer RP releases have some heap optimisation technology built in that does improve resource use. Not as much as this test release, but at least it is stable.
  3. As of version 6.7.9.0, AnyDVD has dropped support for Windows 9x. LAST - $$$$ - SlySoft AnyDVD 6.7.8.0 --- http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
  4. However, some Office 2007 suites also include Publisher, OneNote, and Visio Viewer. Anyway, it's your list. Thanks for compiling it.
  5. One more update to add: - KB973709 Also, you could add the Help files updates too. Maybe in their own section? KB963662 KB963663 KB963665 KB963667 KB963669 KB963670 KB963671 KB963673 KB963677 KB963678
  6. Nice work! Some changes: - KB972363 replaces KB969907 (older one is in the list) - KB974631 replaces KB974561 and KB969613 (the three are in the list) - KB977724 was withdrawn in March and replaced with KB980210. See here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2010/03/11/issues-with-office-after-installing-kb977724.aspx - KB982331 replaces KB978380 and KB969679 (older two are in the list) - KB982312 replaces KB981715 (both are in the list) Additional updates: KB969559 KB972363 KB972581 KB974234 KB979441 KB980729 KB982124 KB982331
  7. A simple explanation to your question, is that a USB Composite Device is a single USB device with more than one function. For example, the KVM I have is a single USB device (the root device is the Composite Device) that has three child devices being a USB 2.0 Hub, a USB HID Keyboard, and a USB HID Mouse. Some PC-Card/ExpressCard mobile data cards have an internal USB hub connected to a USB composite device with a USB CD (virtual) for installing the software, a USB cellular wireless device, and a Mass Storage Device (flash storage card). Another example is a printer with a flash card socket where the printer and mass storage device are part of the composite device. The operating system will always detect and load the driver for the composite device first before it can detect the other child devices. There are exceptions to this explaination. Some USB devices function as compound devices where each function is seen from the operating system as a separate device. An example might be a webcam with a built-in microphone. Here is some good technical USB information for those interested: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/connect/usb/usbfaq_intro.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/connect/usb/usbfaq_intermed.mspx
  8. How to get Windows 98SE (with 98SE2ME) to work with a recent USB composite device Background I wanted to switch between two PCs, one Windows 98SE, and the other Windows 7. There are basic KVM switches that switch PS/2 keyboard/mouse and VGA. However, I wanted to switch audio (and not just stereo!), printer, scanner, and so on. I also wanted DVI switching. So, I found a switch box, or KVMP, that switches peripherals as well. In all, it does USB 2.0 devices (built-in hub) including it's own ports for HID keyboard and HID mouse, 6 audio lines (7.1 channels, line in, microphone), and DVI. Great! Just what I wanted. Installation So, I hooked up the Windows 7 PC, and it detected the USB composite device and child devices, and worked correctly. However, when I fired up Windows 98SE, it was a different story. I have 98SE2ME and NUSB 3.3 installed. Windows 98SE detected the USB composite device and prompted for a driver. So, I plugged in a PS/2 keyboard, and proceeded. There were two options: - usb.inf - the standard Windows 98SE drivers - usbme.inf - the standard Windows Me drivers from 98SE2ME. I started with the 98SE drivers... BSOD! Restarted... BSOD! Solution After some messing around and many restarts, I determined that Windows 98SE was dead... So, I rolled back the registry to the last known good registry save. Windows 98SE started okay, and redetected the USB composite device. This time I selected USBME.INF to use the Windows Me drivers. That worked and I arrived at the desktop. However, the HID devices were not detected. I checked the Device Manager and discovered that the USB composite device had failed with a ntkern.vxd code 2 failure. The driver it was using was usbccgp.sys (4.90.3000 - original Windows Me). So, after a number of wasted restarts, I thought I would try the Windows 98SE version... However, Windows 98SE does not have this file. Well, I reasoned, maybe Windows 2000? No such driver (it uses usbhub.sys). Okay then, what about Windows XP KB822603 (5.1.2600.1243) version of usbccgp.sys? It worked! The other USB devices were all detected okay, and the shared keyboard and mouse were now working. So, I further reasoned, maybe the Windows XP SP3 (KB936929) version of the file (5.1.2600.5512) would work too? Sure enough, it works perfectly, and has been running with no USB problems for some weeks now. So, this is how I got a recent USB composite device and child devices working in Windows 98SE. Please note however, that you will need at least 98SE2ME, and probably also NUSB 3.3. Maybe it would be possible to include the usb.inf file from Windows Me and the usbccgp.sys file from Windows XP SP3 in NUSB?
  9. Okay, okay I understand now. I'm just confused about which version to use because I install 98MP10 last, and it overrides the newer version from 98 SE SP3 Beta 4. I noticed that MD's IE6 SP1 Component Update pack installs ADVPACK.DLL 6.0.2900.2180 from XP SP2. I used to back-date to 6.00.2800.1106 from XP SP1, but in the end just left the XP SP2 version. It's been on my PC for some time now and seems to work okay...
  10. I've been running 98SE + SP2.1a + 98SE2ME + RP9 + GDI Heap Extender Beta 1 + KernelEx 4.5 Beta 2 continuously for a week without a restart now... I normally restart my PC every couple of days because it becomes unstable. However, since installing KernelEx 4.5 Beta 2, it has been so stable and fast that I just haven't needed to. I've been using Microsoft Word XP, Excel XP, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer 6 SP1, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0, Firefox 3.6, Windows Media Player 9, VLC media player 1.0.5, and many other apps and applets. Some of these apps have been continuously open for many days while working on files (saving as I go of course!). I've been viewing YouTube and other flash videos with Adobe Flash 10.0.45.2 with no problem. PDF files standalone and webpage imbedded are working fine with Adobe Acrobat 6.0.6. The only issue I've had, as mentioned previously, is the odd IE6 crash out. It does not seem to be linked with anything in particular. Sometimes it's been while reading a webpage of text. This has happened perhaps five times this week, but has not destabilised Windows!!! I also have for a long time had problems with Microsoft Word XP (2002) completely locking Windows, mouse and everything. So far it has not locked the system since installing KernelEx 4.5 Beta 2. Top marks lads! A sweet Windows 9x enhancement! VLC 1.05 is NOT working well here.Even with a TrueType font, I lose displaying for several menus, like 'Preferences' or the volume level on the interface (Tooltip is displayed, but not the 100% of the actual level). Also, if I delete the cache and preferences (folder 'vlc' in %windir%\Application Data\), VLC crashes at next launching. I had to keep cache of previous version 1.03. Having had a closer look, I can also confirm parts of VLC 1.0.5 windows are missing. The Preferences window and the About window show no text except some "€" Euro symbols... Even the buttons in those windows show no text. I can however see the list of keyboard shortcuts under Preferences, Configure Hotkeys, and the titles of each section in Preferences.
  11. I can confirm the IE6 crashes, although I don't think I've had them while browsing MSFN. Since upgrading to KernelEx 4.5.x, I get occasional, random IE6 crashes (with default IE6 re-start). There is no apparent pattern that I can find. I thought it was just my Windows, but perhaps not. No other crashes to mention, in fact very stable. Care to share that information? Link? I have similar graphics glitches and also a nVIDIA card.
  12. Great work with KernelEx 4.5 Beta 2! So far it's stable and fast. IE problems are gone. It's also fixed a long time problem I've had with Thunderbird 2. When I clicked on URL links in e-mails, nothing happened... I have Firefox installed as well - same problem even when Firefox 2 was installed. I searched the Mozilla forums and all over the Internet, but nothing would fix it! Now that I have installed KernelEx 4.5 Beta 2, suddenly my e-mail links work! You guys are the best!
  13. When I login from the home page (www.msfn.org), before the home page returns, I get the following full screen message: If I then go to the Forums (after manually going to the home page), it shows that I'm logged in.
  14. Wonderful! I have only switched the title bar font from Tahoma to Verdana, and VLC is now perfect. Thanks RetroOS. I think Tahoma must support Unicode.Oddly, I went to my Font folder and it is displaying two times the Tahoma font: same TAHOMA.TTF, same size and same time stamp. It is the only font I see in double. Do you know how to correct that? I noticed the two Tahoma fonts a while ago... One is listed as TAHOMA.TTF and the other as tahoma.ttf. The same size, date, and time. I also have some other duplicate fonts, some with identical font name and file name, and others with variations. I changed all my fonts to Trebuchet MS and that worked.
  15. VLC 1.0.5 works for me. However, I had the same problem you describe, back in 1.0.3. It turned out to be the font I was using for Windows text. After I changed it to another font, VLC displayed correctly. Try changing to another desktop theme to test, or just change the fonts in display appearance settings. I suspect that some 'custom' fonts may not support Unicode and therefore extended characters are blank/missing like in VLC. I could be wrong...
  16. The Save As.../Save dialog box problem seems to be gone now. I'm not sure why, but I have never seen it before I updated to KernelEx 4.5 Beta 1. It may be an intermittant KernelEx 4.5 Beta 1 problem. The other IE problems are still outstanding.
  17. Audacity, the free audio editor, had the last ANSI version for Windows 9x as 1.3.7 Beta. The newer Unicode beta versions work with KernelEx 4.0 Final 2 from the extracted zip. However, to use the installer requires KernelEx 4.5 Beta 1. In both cases, audacity.exe needs compatibility mode set to at least Windows 2000 SP4.
  18. M()zart, one of your questions was answered some posts back: http://www.msfn.org/board/kernelex-4-5-bet...6-page-430.html KernelEx 4.5 Beta 1 testing results so far Firstly let me say, that Xeno86 and Tihiy, you guys deserve medals! Excellent work pulling together this latest creation. Improvements: In KernelEx 4.0 Final 2, I could not get Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7 to work. The System Tray readings worked, but the Dashboard and Settings failed with an application error. Now in KernelEx 4.5 Beta 1, with KernelEx extensions disabled, Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7 works as it should. This tool is really useful, especially for older hardware, to monitor MB/CPU/HDD temperatures, fan speeds, and so on. There is a general improvement in performance! And I thought Window 98SE was tweaked as far as it could go! Never say never! Bugs: SSL (https) pages in Internet Explorer 6 SP1 do not work. They start loading and then hang, or don't load at all. The same pages in Firefox 3 work with no problem. Also, in Internet Explorer 6 SP1, after browsing for only a short time, going to a new web page does not work. The IE globe spins and nothing happens. At all... A restart of Windows is needed to get it working again. The Save As... dialog box is having problems. In Internet Explorer 6 SP1, it will hang for about a minute before showing the folder list. In Office Word XP (2002), it hangs indefinitely. Aside from this small list of problems, it looks like a goody! Keep up the good work lads!
  19. If FastStone Image Viewer does not need KernelEx, then go to Properties (right-click) on the shortcut or directly from the executable (browse), and select the Compatibility tab. Then tick the check box for Disable KernelEx extensions for this program. OK out and test again.
  20. Beta3 was a very specific test release for one person's problem testing. It was never intended for general use. So... Beta1 is still the most stable release.
  21. Thanks for the update! I have the latest 98MP10 installed, so when I run the latest MP9URP9X installer, it of course says that my version of Windows Media Player is not supported. Just out of curiosity, I compared the two installers. Here is a list of files that come with the latest MP9URP9X, and are newer than what I already have, and do not come with 98MP10. There are two exceptions: - an older laprxy.dll file that I found in \Program Files\Windows Media Player even though 98MP10 installs it into %windir%\SYSTEM - I removed it. - wmpdxm.dll from MP9URP9X is newer than 98MP10! Also, wmpns.dll is in both %windir%\SYSTEM and \Program Files\Windows Media Player? %windir%\SYSTEM cewmdm.dll drmclien.dll drmstor.dll drmv2clt.dll dxmasf.dll l3codeca.acm logagent.exe (see note below) mp43dmod.dll mp4sdmod.dll mpg4dmod.dll msdxm.ocx msnetobj.dll mspmsnsv.dll npwmsdrm.dll (much older than MP9URP9X PF\WMP - I removed it) qasf.dll strmdll.dll wmnetmgr.dll wmp.dll wmpdxm.dll (from MP9URP9X is newer than 98MP10) wmvcore.dll \Program Files\Windows Media Player logagent.exe (much older than MP9URP9X WIN\SYS - I removed it) migrate.exe npdrmv2.dll npdrmv2.zip npds.zip npdsplay.dll npwmsdrm.dll (see note above) The question is, should some, or all of the additional files in MP9URP9X be included in 98MP10? It would appear that at least some of those files are common to both versions of Windows Media Player... On a side note, and not related to either of the above packages, I also found unicows.dll in \Program Files\Windows Media Player, and many other \Program Files folders that were much older than my master copy in %windir%\SYSTEM. For continuity, I removed all copies in \Program Files folders. I could see (and have probably had) problems with KernelEx if old copies of unicows.dll were being loaded by certain apps. There is a note for 98MP10: "No need for XP N SP3 Q943604 files, same as XP SP3" For uniformity between the packages, should the same 9.0.0.4504 (MP9URP9X) files be used instead of 9.0.0.4503? These are the files: %windir%\INF unregmp2.exe %windir%\SYSTEM blackbox.dll msscp.dll wmp.ocx wmpasf.dll wmpcore.dll wmploc.dll wmpns.dll wmsdmoe.dll \Program Files\Windows Media Player mpvis.dll wmplayer.exe wmpns.dll Another option could be to have MP9URP9X run an alternate install procedure if 98MP10 is installed. In this case, any common files between the packages could be written to the *.MP9 backup files. This way, if 98MP10 is removed, then it will roll back to the latest WMP9. Just an idea. Anyway, I decided to replace older files with newer files as above, unregister and re-register, and update media player registration. This has actually fixed some issues I had with some types of video files only playing some seconds before stopping. EDIT: I've also found that browselc.dll in 98MP10 is older than (and overwrites) my newer Q331485 version. 98MP10: (browsel9.dll): 6.0.2800.1106 Q331485: 6.0.2800.1146
  22. Yes, I can confirm this too on Windows 98SE. The installer needs to be set to Windows 2000 SP4 compatibility, and then thunderbird.exe before the first run. However, Thunderbird 3.0 has the same printing failure as Firefox 3.x.x. From what I understand, older Linux kernel versions also have printing failure with Firefox 3.x.x (and therefore Thunderbird 3.0). This makes sense because newer printing functionality is used that does not exist in older OSes.
  23. Yes indeed! Nice work MD - looking after the security concerns of Windows 98SE IE users! All looks good on my PC. I too can confirm point 1 above with the extra empty folders.
  24. There has been plenty of recent discussion regarding how to install Adobe Flash Player 10 using KernelEx (some interesting methods!). However, the very simple install procedure has already been outlined by Xeno86. Please everyone, read the first couple of posts of this topic!!! For those who really can't be bothered, here is the key section quoted just for you! On that note, Adobe Flash Player 10.0.42.34 installs and works, both Plugin and ActiveX. ActiveX: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplaye...h_player_ax.exe Plugin: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplaye...lash_player.exe Well, the prerelease versions of Thunderbird 3.0 may have worked, but the final release does not work for me... When it runs, all the graphics and text are messed up - mainly just blocks of colour... Addition: GnuPG 1.4.10 will install and work correctly with KernelEx, when the Compatibility tab for the installer is set to Windows XP SP2.
  25. uTorrent 1.8.5 (build 17091) is available from FileHippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/6484/ GnuPG 1.4.10 no longer installs on Win9x, so: LAST - FREE - GnuPG (The GNU Privacy Guard) 1.4.9 --- ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/binary/gnupg-w32cli-1.4.9.exe
