  1. It sounds like you are talking about the 32-bit version of Windows XP (if you don't specifically know otherwise, it's 32-bit), this guide is written for the rare 64-bit version. That being said, assuming you have an original Microsoft XP disk, all you need to do under nLite is integrate Service Pack 3 (when integrating there is no need to install Service Packs seperately). You may as well integrate the latest Hotfix Pack at the same time. For 32-bit XP I also integrate a few bits and pieces, here's what I include (all from the same site as the update pack): [Hotfixes] D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\1_XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack_20121211.7z D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\2_Ricks-YumeYao_IE8_Addon_Clean_ENU_1_4_17.7z D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\3_YumeYao_WMP11_Addon_ENU_V3_4_5.7z D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\4_Ricks-YumeYao_MicrosoftVC78910RuntimeLibraries_MixedAddon_2_1_5.7z D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\5_YumeYao_XPSWIC_Installer_Addon_1_2_0.cab D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\6_Kels_CPLBonus_v12.8.8_addon.rar D:\Operating_Systems\nLite\WinXP\Hotfix\7_Kels_Uber_Addon_v16.5.7z

  3. November updates - a bit late I know, waiting for .Net installers Deletion: RunOnce\dotNet11SP1_UH_Jun12.exe RunOnce\dotNet20SP2_UH_Jun12.exe Addition: Download from MediaFire Hotfix_2000sp5_N_date.7z (.Net 1.1 SP1 & .Net 2.0 SP2) and extract it into the same directory that you chose to extract the Config archive into (see notes part 4 for other options). MD5: F4D16EA4A7FA6E5D09B1476D8F836625 SHA-1: CBB4576F6BA431F53E3935DDFDF92DE8F9D9EA96 Added a link to Tomasz86's archive. Also the latest version of Avast anti-virus once again works with Windows 2000.

MS12-074 - WPF Reflection Optimization And a full file renumbering of \Hotfix, just run UpdatePrep.bat Other changes: Latest versions of Google Earth and Chrome don't work in my test VM, I've provided a link to the previous version of Google Earth but as Chrome automatically updates it will suicide itself. Needed to supply direct link to Skype business installer as it's no longer listed on the webpage and the normal full installer won't work if you're offline (says it can't contact the download server). Also changed the frequency of internet time synchronisation from weekly to daily as I've always found that systems drift considerably, my desktop loses about 10 minutes a week.
  5. A quick note to anyone using this guide who is also running Avast Anti-Virus. Do NOT "upgrade" to the latest version (7.0.1473), stay with 7.0.1466 for now.

  7. Critical Internet Explorer update Deletion: Hotfix\904-IE8-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2722913-x64-ENU.exe Replace: # ▼. RunOnce\install_flash_player_11_active_x.exe .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9,573,296 . Updated 18 September Addition: # ▼. Hotfix\904-IE8-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2744842-x64-ENU.exe 43,867,192 . MS12-063 - Cumulative Security Update Added support for Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit with all EMET tested applications being protected (All.xml applied) and the Oracle VirtualBox extension pack (but it won't show as installed until you create your first VM). Speaking of VirtualBox, I got an email stating that my long running problems had finally been fixed with 4.1.22 and to reopen the bug ticket if I was still having problems. Having tried 4.1.20 and having it still hang all the time I didn't hold out much hope but 4.1.22 seems OK. I was going to report that the problem had been fixed but now Oracle won't let me login to my account, oh well. None the less I'll be sticking with 3.0.14 as they started Vista-fying it with the 3.1.x series, by which I mean the settings I change when doing testing are 2 clicks away in VirtualBox 3.0.14 but 5 clicks away in later versions. Explorer09, yep, had the VM running as I headed out the door this morning. EDIT: I'd advise caution before installing Microsoft's EMET as 7-Zip and Skype didn't work for me after installing EMET. I did a survey of all the EMET supported applications in the guide and found that WinRAR and Internet Explorer (64-bit only, 32-bit OK) didn't work either. I've added commands to resolve these issues but can't say with any confidence that there won't be others.
  8. Microsoft's download site has been seriously spotty as of late, they seem to be transitioning it to a new style (again). For instance I had a lot of trouble getting to the download page for KB2736233 (latest ActiveX Kill-Bits), only once out of multiple attempts did it show up on searching. However as the direct link is still active at this time (noting that your page uses the same direct link), it will be updated if it's still stuffing up after next month's updates.
  9. September updates Deletion: RunOnce\WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2695962-x64-ENU.exe Replace: # ▼. RunOnce\install_flash_player_11_active_x.exe .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9,575,112 . Updated 21 August Addition: @ . . . RunOnce\WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2736233-x64-ENU.exe . 685,592 . ActiveX Kill-Bits Cumulative Obviously one of those almost mythical months with no Microsoft security updates (the ActiveX Kill-Bits target Cisco software). On the supported application front, the batch files will now remove AVG security toolbar (for I.E.) and the obsolete versions of the Visual C++ runtimes installed by QuickTime Alternative Lite and Avast Anti-Virus. The recommended method for installing Microsoft Office 2007 has been changed with instructions and download links in the file Misc\Office2007.html (but the old method will still work). Also the "Small Business" version is now supported along with the previously supported "Home and Student", however support for other versions will require the help of you dear reader.
  10. Rado, have you tried installing from a USB stick instead of the DVD drive? I ask because on my system if I try to install XP x64 from the SATA attached DVD drive I always get a BSOD, I have to use a PATA IDE attached drive.

I've decided from now on to leave in the batch files all my hardware specific driver commands but comment them all out as well as some other non-freeware applications I install.
  12. VirtualBox is obviously the big one, but there's also VMware Server 1.0.10 (and other VMware products) and Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 (and other Microsoft products). However one concern is will drivers for one version of these VMs work for different versions (by this I mean will drivers for VirtualBox 3.0.14 work on VirtualBox 4.1.18) If they aren't compatible across versions then there's not really any point including them as they'll quickly go obsolete.
  13. Yep, I plan to add info and script install support for Opera 12.01 and Firefox ESR next time I update it.
  14. While I personally only use Windows 2000 within virtual machines these days, I'd suggest including the CPU, Chipset, Mass Storage, LAN and WLAN drivers from the DriverPacks archive. The May 2008 versions (W2K support after this gets a bit dodgy) of these 5 packs only amount to 33.5 MB. Sound and Video drivers take up far larger amounts of space but unlike the 5 groups I nominated they are not necessary to getting a system running and online and hence can easily be added later. Perhaps you might want to consider adding VM drivers as well?

  17. cu·mu·la·tive [kyoo-myuh-luh-tiv, -ley-tiv] adjective 1. increasing or growing by accumulation or successive additions: the cumulative effect of one rejection after another. 2. formed by or resulting from accumulation or the addition of successive parts or elements. 3. of or pertaining to interest or dividends that, if not paid when due, become a prior claim for payment in the future: cumulative preferred stocks. So your options are nothing or A or A+B or A+B+C
  18. That's normal behaviour or at least it happens on my system as well, don't worry about it. As far as I can tell it causes no problems on a running system or at least I haven't heard of any. If you're concerned you can always use the WMP11 silent install option.
  19. I guess you may as well give it a try as is, if Microsoft has done their job right the Service Pack should be able to correctly remove those hotfixes.
  20. Strange, my SP1 disk (which is really RtM, XP x64 and Server 2003 x64 were released when Server 2003 32-bit had already received SP1) has a volume label of ARMPXOEM_EN Also there is no SVCpack directory on a default SP1 (or SP2) disk, did you buy an OEM disk yourself (in a plastic DVD style case) or was it supplied with your computer?
  21. OK, I've changed the notice to indicate that Opera is buggy while Firefox no longer supports Windows 2000. If Opera gets their act together I'll indicate that they're the only major browser to still support Windows 2000.
  22. Both, after slipsteaming one should copy the Run*_XP-64.bat files and the AddOns & RunOnce folders to the nLite working directory as indicated in step 9 of the guide. No it is not normal, are you sure that your CD isn't SP2 already? Check the root directory of the CD, if it has WIN51AP.SP2 then the disk is Service Pack 2. Yes you can use the updated version if you like, in fact you can use 5eraph's pack and skip the vast majority of the Hotfixes, needing only DirectX, WMP11 and .Net related ones. You can try it, but I haven't tested it. Considering I've never heard of an x64 capable computer that only has a CD rather than a DVD drive I've never been worried about the size of the various installers. Googling it, it seems to be similar to the old and tempermental Media Transfer Protocol, as it's not a high priority download it's not included in the update list.
  23. OK, I've altered the security warning to: As Windows 2000 has been out of support since July 2010 and no current major web browser (or plugin) works reliably on it, it is not safe to use Windows 2000 on an Internet facing machine.
  24. That might be due to the unofficial kernel you use, with a standard kernel launching Opera as a member of the Users group brings up the following message box: Startup error Opera has failed to access or upgrade your profile. This may have occurred because your computer has insufficient resources available or because some files are locked by other applications. You may have to restart your computer before Opera will start again. OK
